Police Report: Week of May 29 - June 4

May 29th:

Nothing significant to report.

May 30th:

3200 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Open door – 11 am. Officers responded for the report of an open door at the Mount Rainier Library. The officers discovered the front door open. There was no one inside and there were no signs of forced entry or theft.  Attempts to make contact with library officials were negative so, after exhausting all resources the officers purchased a hasp and lock and secured the front door.

4600 block of 29th Street: Citizen Robbery – 5 pm. The victim told officers that he was outside having a cookout with his family when he was approached by a black male described as wearing a black shirt and army style fatigue shorts. The man asked the victim about the location of a gas station, and then produced a gray colored handgun and threatened to shoot the victim and his child. The man stole the victim’s wallet, got into a BMW automobile with DC tags and fled the area. 

Rhode Island Avenue at 34th Street: Motor vehicle collision – 11 pm. Officers investigated a two car collision and determined one vehicle failed to yield the right of way to the other. The driver of the at-fault vehicle was cited for failure to yield the right-of-way. The driver of the second vehicle did not have a license and her car was unregistered and uninsured. She was cited accordingly and her vehicle was impounded.

May 31st:

4200 block of Rainier Avenue: Tampering (x2) – 4:30 am. The owner of a 2009 Mercury told officers she discovered that someone had ransacked the inside of her car but nothing had been stolen or damaged. While speaking to the victim the officers noticed that a 2002 Toyota belonging to a neighbor had also been ransacked. They contacted the Toyota’s owner who also said that nothing had been stolen or damaged.

3800 block of 32nd Street: Theft from auto (x3) – 7 am. The owner of a 2007 Honda reported that someone entered her unlocked vehicle and stole a quantity of loose change. The owner of a 2006 Chrysler reported that approximately $120 worth of her personal property had been stolen from inside her unlocked vehicle. The owner of a 2006 Honda reported that someone entered her vehicle and stole approximately $2 in loose change. There were no signs of forced entry into the vehicle. While investigating these three thefts from auto officers developed a suspect and information that the suspect targets only those vehicles that are open or unlocked and primarily targets loose change and portable valuables.

3200 block of Chillum Road: Residential burglary - 10:20 am. The female resident reported that her former boyfriend came into her apartment without her permission and against her will. The boyfriend has a history of victimizing the woman including sexually assaulting her back in February. Based on the information obtained from the present incident coupled with the prior sexual assault officers were able to obtain an arrest warrant for the boyfriend charging him with attempted rape.

June 1st:

2900 block of Varnum Street: Criminal citation – 5:10 pm. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for drinking in public.

4300 block of Russell Avenue: Theft from auto – 7:45 pm. The owner of a 1999 Nissan Altima reported that someone stole the rear tag off his vehicle.

June 2nd:

3300 block of Shepherd Street: Vehicle impound – 12:05 am. Officers patrolling the area using a mobile license plate reader identified and impounded a 1998 Chevy for being unregistered and displaying tags issued to another vehicle. 

3500 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Warrant arrest – 2 am. Officers stopped a vehicle for a traffic violation and learned that a passenger in the vehicle had an open arrest warrant through Prince George’s County for violation of probation. He was arrested on the warrant and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville.

2310 Varnum Street (7-11): Theft – 8 am. The staff of the 7-11 gave officers a description of a woman who stole a fountain drink from the store. Officers located and detained the woman and she was positively identified by one of the store clerks. However, store employees elected not to pursue theft charges and only wanted her banned from the store.

4300 block of 29th Street: Theft/fraud – 7:50 pm. A woman reported that between May 23rd and May 25th someone cashed three checks from her bank account without her knowledge or authorization. Her bank’s fraud center is handling the investigation.

3300 block of Chillum Road: Warrant arrest – 8:40 pm. Officers assisting Park Police with a citizen robbery that occurred in their jurisdiction stopped an individual matching the description of one of the victim’s assailants. The victim was unable to positively identify the man however the officers discovered that he had an open arrest warrant through Prince George’s County for failing to appear in court on a disorderly conduct charge. He was arrested on the warrant and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville.

June 3rd:

4200 block of Russell Avenue: Attempted burglary – 4:30 am. The resident was awakened by the noise of someone trying to break into her apartment through her living room window. She screamed that she was calling the police and by the time officers arrived the suspect(s) had fled the area.

4100 block of 32nd Street: Residential alarm – 7 am. Officers responded for an activated residential alarm and discovered an open door. The house was found to be vacant, however they did discover a loaded handgun left inside. The owner of the hose was contacted and verified that the gun was his. It was recovered for safekeeping.

One Municipal Place: Criminal citation (x2) – 7:45 pm. Officers issued two men criminal citations for possessing open containers of alcohol.

3300 block of Perry Street: Death from natural causes – 9:50 pm. Fire/rescue personnel reported the discovery of the remains of a man who died from natural causes. The man’s remains were turned over to the State Medical Examiner’s office for postmortem examination.

June 4th:

4500 block of 32nd Street: Theft of a bicycle – 7:45 am. The owner of a blue 22” Giant Cypress bicycle reported that someone stole his bike after cutting the security chain lock. 

3700 block of 34th Street: Recovered stolen tags – 5:15 pm. Officers investigating a vehicle displaying tags issued to another vehicle discovered that the tags had been previously reported stolen from an address in DC. They also learned that the vehicle on which they were displayed had also been stolen in DC and recovered by its owner with the stolen tags attached. MPD was notified of the tag recovery.

3200 block of Chillum Road: Criminal citation – 8:25 pm. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for possessing an open container of alcohol.

3300 block of Buchanan Street: Citizen robbery – 11:15 pm. The victim told officers that as he was entering his apartment he was approached by a man wearing a black ski mask and armed with a small black handgun. The suspect demanded the victim’s cell phone and wallet. After the victim gave the suspect his property the suspect fled the apartment building in an unknown direction. The victim described his assailant as a black male about 20 years of age, 5’07” tall with a thin build and wearing blue jeans, a brown shirt with white writing on the front and a black ski mask.

These kiosks can contain concealed computers that attempt to extract data such as contact information, photos, and videos from connected devices, unbeknownst to the users. Additionally, malicious or compromised charging stations can expose devices to the risk of a malware infection. Police Report: May 8-11

Friday May 8th : 3400 block of 11 Newton Street : At about 2 pm officers responded for the report of a woman who had been assaulted by her boyfriend. The boyfriend allegedly punched the woman in the mouth and choked her. She told the officers that she did not want any police assistance and refused to tell the officers what had occurred. She was referred to the District Court Commissioner if she decided to press charges at a later time. Saturday May 9th : Nothing significant to report. Sunday May 10th : 4500 block of Eastern Avenue (BP station) : At about 11 am officers responded for the report of a stolen auto. The officers met with the victim/owner who told them that he left the keys to his 2002 Lincoln on the front seat when he went inside to pay for gas. When he came out of the store he saw his Lincoln being driven up Eastern Avenue towards Rhode Island Avenue by a black male (no further description). A check of the area for the stolen car proved negative and a lookout for it was gi
