Police Report: December 2-8

The Mount Rainier Police Department’s weekly report is not intended to be a listing of every incident or call for service handled by the police department, but merely a general summary of incidents that may be of interest to the community. Some reports may be outside the date parameters due to extended investigations or other circumstances. Some cases are not included at all due to ongoing investigations.

December 8th:

3400 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Vehicle impound – 4am. Officers on patrol came upon a 2006 Nissan Maxima stopped in the traffic circle. Further investigation revealed that the driver and passenger were asleep in the front seats. Both individuals were awakened and officers determined that neither party could safely operate the vehicle. The vehicle was impounded and the occupants sent on their way.

3400 block of Perry Street: Stolen vehicle – 9:10am. The owner of a 2008 Ford truck told officers that she left the vehicle running while she was opening the front door of her residence. While she was away from the vehicle an unknown individual stole the truck and fled the area north on Perry Street. The victim was unable to provide a description of the thief.

4200 block of Russell Avenue: Found missing juvenile – 3:25pm. Officers responded for the report that several family members were detaining a juvenile previously reported missing to DC police. Further investigation revealed that the juvenile also had warrants for escape and family offenses in DC. Officers took the juvenile into custody and transported her to MRPD headquarters where she was released to the custody of officers and agents assigned to the MPD/FBI Child Exploitation Task Force. 

3300 block of Chauncey Place: Theft from auto – 4:30pm. The owner of a 2002 Chevy Suburban told officers that sometime between 9:30am on December 6th and the time he called police someone stole a pull bar and some lights off the outside of his vehicle. No evidence was recovered at the scene.

December 7th:

Nothing significant to report.

December 6th:

3100 block of Buchanan Street: Vehicle impound – 9am. Officers impounded a 1999 Mazda Miata that had been parked for an extended period of time displaying DC registration plates that expired in 2010.

December 5th:

3800 block of 31st Street: Emergency petition – 7:35pm. Officers responded for the report of two men fighting in a front yard. Further investigation revealed that one of the men was under the influence of PCP. He was taken into custody and transported to Washington Adventist Hospital where he was released to medical personnel for emergency treatment.

December 4th:

2700 block of Arundel Road: Recovered stolen auto – 1:15am. Officers patrolling with a mobile license plate reader received an alert on a 1997 Honda Accord. Further investigation revealed that the vehicle had been reported stolen on October 10th from a residence in Montgomery County that had been burglarized. MCP was notified of the recovery and the vehicle was impounded for safekeeping.

4200 block of Russell Avenue: Stolen vehicle – 5am. The owner of a 2011 Chevy Tahoe told officers that sometime prior to his call to police someone stole his vehicle. A canvass of the area identified no witnesses or evidence as to those responsible for the theft.

December 3rd:

4300 block of Russell Avenue: Theft 2:25pm. Officers spoke with the resident who said that she placed items of her personal jewelry on a shelf in her bedroom closet at about 9pm on November 2nd. She further stated that two Kaywood Apartments employees were performing maintenance in her apartment and after they left she discovered that her jewelry had been stolen. The investigation into the theft is continuing.

3200 block of Queenstown Drive: Recovered property – 5:35pm. The reporting person told officers that she came into possession of a Ruger 357 magnum handgun when her father passed away. She further stated that she and her husband wrestled over the gun during a domestic argument earlier in the day and that afterwards her husband took the weapon and went to her mother’s house in Hyattsville. MRPD officers with assistance from Hyattsville City PD officers were able to obtain possession of the weapon. It has been secured for safekeeping at MRPD.

December 2nd:

3000 block of Queens Chapel Road: Vehicle impound – 7:40pm. Officers stopped a 1997 Toyota Corolla for a traffic violation. Further investigation revealed that the driver had a suspended license. He was issued several traffic citations and the vehicle was impounded.

The following information  comes courtesy  of the  New Jersey Cybersecurity & Communications Integration Cell Public cell phone charging stations supplied with power cables or USB ports located in stores, airports, libraries, and schools may seem like a convenient way to charge your mobile devices on-the-go, but can you be sure that your device and data will be safe if you connect? These kiosks can contain concealed computers that attempt to extract data such as contact information, photos, and videos from connected devices, unbeknownst to the users. Additionally, malicious or compromised charging stations can expose devices to the risk of a malware infection. Even if the charging station isn’t malicious, the manufacturer or owner of the kiosk may require users to input their email addresses or phone numbers in order to charge their devices, potentially exposing them to unwanted marketing campaigns, spam emails, and scam calls. Police Report: May 8-11

Friday May 8th : 3400 block of 11 Newton Street : At about 2 pm officers responded for the report of a woman who had been assaulted by her boyfriend. The boyfriend allegedly punched the woman in the mouth and choked her. She told the officers that she did not want any police assistance and refused to tell the officers what had occurred. She was referred to the District Court Commissioner if she decided to press charges at a later time. Saturday May 9th : Nothing significant to report. Sunday May 10th : 4500 block of Eastern Avenue (BP station) : At about 11 am officers responded for the report of a stolen auto. The officers met with the victim/owner who told them that he left the keys to his 2002 Lincoln on the front seat when he went inside to pay for gas. When he came out of the store he saw his Lincoln being driven up Eastern Avenue towards Rhode Island Avenue by a black male (no further description). A check of the area for the stolen car proved negative and a lookout for it was gi
