Police Report: August 4-10

The Mount Rainier Police Department’s weekly report is not intended to be a listing of every incident or call for service handled by the police department, but merely a general summary of incidents that may be of interest to the community. Some reports may be outside the date parameters due to extended investigations or other circumstances. Some cases are not included at all due to ongoing investigations.

August 10th:

3200 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Traffic - 12:35am. Officers stopped a 1998 Mercury for numerous equipment violations. Further investigation revealed that the drive had a suspended license. He was issued several traffic citations and the vehicle was impounded.

4200 block of 34th Street: Motor vehicle collision - 8am. Officers investigated a collision and determined that a vehicle backing out of a driveway struck an oncoming vehicle. The collision caused the oncoming vehicle to leave the roadway and strike several street signs. The backing vehicle's driver was cited accordingly.

One Municipal Place: Criminal citation - 9am. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for drinking in public.

One Municipal Place: MIR (officer safety) - 9am. While officers were attending to the above alcohol violation they noticed something buried in the rocks in the planting beds. Upon further inspection the object was identified as a fixed blade knife that appeared to have been stashed there. Officers recovered the knife and logged it to property. The incident was documented to make other officers aware of the potential officer safety issue.

3300 block of Bunker Hill Road: CDS arrest - 2:40pm. Officers stopped to cite a man for drinking in public. As they approached him they smelled the odor of burnt marijuana and saw that he was smoking a marijuana cigarette. He was issued citations for drinking in public and possession of marijuana.

4000 block of 33rd Street: 4th degree sex offense - 10:20pm. A 19 year old woman called to report that a Latino male touched her inappropriately as she was walking home. She told officers and PGPD detectives that the suspect came up behind her, lifted up her dress and pushed he to the ground. She said that the man reached his hand around the front of her pelvis region touching her vaginal area on the outside of her clothes. She reacted by slapping the man and he stopped his assault and fled the area on foot down 33rd Street towards Bunker Hill Road. The man was described as a Latino male with short "spiky" hair and a medium build; 18-19 years of age; 5'6" to 5'9" tall; wearing blue jeans and a gray polo shirt. A search of the area for the suspect proved negative.

August 9th:

3400 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Vandalism to auto: 8:35am. The owner of a 2008 Jeep Commander told officers that sometime between 4pm on August 8th and the time he called police someone cut all four of the vehicle's tires. The victim has a CCTV camera that caught the suspect on video. The suspect could only be identified as a black male wearing a white t-shirt.

3200 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Criminal citation - 10:25am. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for drinking in public.

3800 block of 37th Street: Stolen auto - 10:25am. The owner of a 2006 Ford F250 reported that sometime between 10:45pm on August 8th and the time she called police someone stole her truck. No evidence/witnesses were identified.

3200 block of Taylor Street: Vandalism to auto - 1:30pm. The owner of a 2008 Dodge Avenger told officers that sometime between 9:30am this morning and the time he called police someone smashed out the front passenger side window. The victim stated that he did not hear or see anyone around the vehicle. It should also be noted that the victim’s same window was broken out the day prior and replaced earlier in the day today.

3200 block of Rhode Island Avenue: MV collision - 3:30pm. The owner of a 2006 GMC told officers that he was driving north of Rhode Island Avenue when a 2002 Chevy Malibu turned onto Rhode Island from Eastern and struck his vehicle. There were no injuries to either driver.

3400 block of Newton Street: MV collision - 3:40pm. The driver of a 2009 Toyota was attempting to parallel park when a 1999 Ford Crown Victoria attempted to go around him. The Ford struck the Toyota causing minor damage.

3800 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Traffic - 6pm. Officers stopped a 1987 Volvo for a traffic violation. Further investigation revealed that the driver did not have a license. He was issued several traffic citations and his vehicle was impounded.

2400 block of Chillum Road: Warrant service - 11:45pm. Officers stopped a 2003 Ford Crown Victoria for a traffic violation. Further investigation revealed that the driver had an open arrest warrant through Prince Georges County for 4th degree burglary. He was arrested and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville.

August 8th:

4100 block of 32nd Street: Vandalism to auto – 7am. The owner of a 2003 Nissan Pathfinder told officers that she came out to her vehicle this morning and discovered that the vehicle’s rear driver’s side window had been smashed out. Nothing was stolen from in or on the vehicle and no witnesses/evidence was identified.

2800 block of Upshur Street: Vandalism to auto – 6:40am. The owner of a 2011 Chevy told officers that he came out to his vehicle this morning and discovered that someone had broken out two windows on the driver’s side. Nothing was stolen from in or on the vehicle and no witnesses/evidence was identified.

3200 block of Taylor Street: Vandalism to auto – 9:20am. The owner of a 2008 Dodge Avenger told officers that she came out to her vehicle this morning to discover that someone had broken out a driver’s side window. Nothing was stolen from in or on the vehicle and no witnesses/evidence was identified.

2800 block of Upshur Street: Vandalism to auto – 10:30am. The owner of a 2003 Toyota Camry told officers that he came out to his vehicle this morning to discover that someone had broken out the front passenger side window. Nothing was stolen from in or on the vehicle and no witnesses/evidence was identified.

4300 block of 28th Place: Stolen vehicle – 11am. The owner of a 2012 Dodge Caravan told officers that she parked and secured her vehicle in the back parking lot at about 11pm last night. When she returned for her van this morning she discovered that it had been stolen. No evidence or witnesses were identified.

3400 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Criminal citation – 12:15pm. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for drinking in public.

4100 block of 32nd Street: Theft from auto – 1:20pm. The owner of a 2008 Nissan Sentra told officers that sometime prior to her call to police someone broke into her vehicle by breaking out the front driver’s window. Once inside those responsible stole an iPod. No evidence or witnesses were identified.

3200 block of Chillum Road: 1st degree assault – 5:45pm. Officers spoke with the husband and wife victims who said that they were accosted by a former neighbor. The dispute was of a domestic nature. The suspect accused the male victim of sleeping with his wife and told him that he had eight days to move away from the apartment complex. The suspect threatened both victims with bodily harm should they fail to move away. He then produced a handgun, pointed it at the male victim and re-iterated his threats before leaving the victim’s apartment. PGPD District I detectives responded to the scene to interview the victims and assume the follow-up investigation.

2500 block of Queens Chapel Road: MIR – 6pm. Officers spoke with a woman who told them that on or about August 1st someone withdrew $300 from her bank account without her knowledge or permission. When officers inquired as to why she waited so long to report the incident she said that she forgot.  Officers later talked to one of the woman’s relatives who said that she was not forthcoming with the truth. The relative said that the woman knew full well who used the card, that she had given them her PIN, and that the alleged missing money had been returned to the account.

August 7th:

4100 block of 33rd StreetStrong arm robbery UPDAT EARREST. On July 28th a woman was robbed of her purse in the 4100 block of 33rd Street. PGPD robbery detectives developed a suspect in the case and the victim was able to positively identify him as the man who robbed her. The suspect was arrested for a different crime by DC police and is currently being held on a no-bond status for a parole violation and two robbery charges. Detectives obtained an arrest warrant for the suspect charging him with robbery and have filed a request for extradition with DC.

2900 block of Allison Street: 2nd degree assault – 12:30am. Officers responded for the report of a domestic dispute. When they arrived they learned that an intoxicated man had physically assaulted his sister and threatened other family members. When the officers tried to deescalate the situation the man made additional threats to harm his family members. He was arrested, charged with 2nd degree assault and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville.

3500 block of Rhode Island Avenue: MV collision – 1:20pm. The driver of a 2004 Nissan Quest going south on Rhode Island Avenue failed to reduce his speed and crashed into the rear end of a Metro bus. The bus sustained minor damage and continued on its way. The Nissan was not drivable after the collision and was impounded for safekeeping. The driver was issued a citation for failing to reduce speed to avoid the collision.

4200 block of Russell Avenue: Stolen auto – 2:45pm. The owner of a 2006 BMW told officers that he parked and locked his vehicle last night at about 9pm. When he returned for the car this afternoon he discovered that it had been stolen. No evidence or witnesses were identified.

2700 block of Allison Street: Burglary – 9:10pm. The resident told officers that sometime between 2pm and 8pm today someone broke into her apartment and stole some items of jewelry and cash. Officers identified pry marks on the front door and determined that those responsible forced open the front door to gain entry. Officers processed the door and the apartment for latent evidence with negative results.

August 6th:

3300 block of Chillum Road: Vehicle impound – 8am. Officers impounded a 2000 Mitsubishi Gallant that was unregistered and displaying tags issued to another vehicle.

4500 block of 32nd Street: Theft – 9am. Officers spoke with a man who said that he secured his bicycle to a fence on August 5th at about 8:30pm. When he returned this morning he found that someone had stolen both wheels off the bike.

3300 block of Perry Street: Criminal citation – 9:30am. Officers issued a woman a criminal citation for drinking in public.

4500 block of Eastern Avenue: Criminal citation – 12:30pm. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for urinating in public.

3400 block of Newton Street: Vehicle impound – 4pm. Officers impounded a 2000 Nissan Xterra for displaying registration plates that expired in September of 2012.

August 5th:

4400 block of 28th Place: Vehicle impound – 8:20am. Officers were patrolling when they observed a 2003 Mercury Mountaineer that had been parked for several days with old parking citations still sitting on the vehicle. Further investigation revealed that the vehicle’s registration was suspended and expired since August of 2011. The vehicle was impounded.

3300 block of Chillum Road (7-11): Theft – 1:40pm. The store manager told officers that a man came into the store, selected several items from the store shelves and placed them in a black bag. The man then walked out of the store without paying for the items. He was described only as a black male wearing a white t-shirt and shorts.

2900 block of Arundel Road: Burglary – 2pm. The resident told officers that he left his apartment for about three hours. When he returned home he discovered the bathroom window open. When he inspected his apartment he discovered that a laptop and other personal items had been stolen. No evidence was recovered and no suspects were identified.

4600 block of 27th Street: Domestic – 9:20pm. The victim told officers that she obtained a protective order against her former husband last December. As the result of an illness the victim allowed her ex to move back into the apartment to assist with her recovery. This evening they became involved in a verbal argument. The argument turned physical and the man punched the victim in the face knocking her out of her wheel chair. He then fled the apartment taking her cell phone with him. Officers obtained an arrest warrant for the man charging him with 2nd degree domestic assault and other crimes. 

August 4th:

The following information  comes courtesy  of the  New Jersey Cybersecurity & Communications Integration Cell Public cell phone charging stations supplied with power cables or USB ports located in stores, airports, libraries, and schools may seem like a convenient way to charge your mobile devices on-the-go, but can you be sure that your device and data will be safe if you connect? These kiosks can contain concealed computers that attempt to extract data such as contact information, photos, and videos from connected devices, unbeknownst to the users. Additionally, malicious or compromised charging stations can expose devices to the risk of a malware infection. Even if the charging station isn’t malicious, the manufacturer or owner of the kiosk may require users to input their email addresses or phone numbers in order to charge their devices, potentially exposing them to unwanted marketing campaigns, spam emails, and scam calls. H1N1 Influenza Information

With the outbreak of the H1N1 flu virus now affecting residents across the United States, and the possibility that some Maryland residents may have been infected with the disease, the Mayor & Council along with the MRPD deemed it wise to let Mount Rainier residents know of precautions that individuals should take in order to minimize the possibility of being infected by this virus.
