Police Report: September 22-28

The Mount Rainier Police Department’s weekly report is not intended to be a listing of every incident or call for service handled by the police department, but merely a general summary of incidents that may be of interest to the community. Some reports may be outside the date parameters due to extended investigations or other circumstances. Some cases are not included at all due to ongoing investigations.

September 28th:

4000 block of 34th Street: Vehicle impound – 7:10am. Officers impounded a 1997 Dodge van after finding it parked on a sidewalk and blocking both a fire hydrant and a stop sign.

3900 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Warrant service – 3:10pm. Officers stopped a 2003 Ford Taurus for a traffic violation. Further investigation revealed that the driver had an open arrest warrant through the Calvert County Sheriff’s office for failing to appear in court on a domestic related charge. He was issued two traffic citations, arrested on the warrant and released to the custody of the CCSO at the Equestrian Center in Upper Marlboro.

3800 block of 31st Street: Burglary – 5:20pm. The resident told officers that she left home at about 11:45 this morning locking and securing her residence as she left. When she returned she noticed several items on her dining room table out of place. As she inspected the rest of her home she discovered several additional items of her personal property had been stolen. Officers determined that those responsible entered through an unlocked kitchen window. The residence was processed for evidence.

September 27th:

4700 block of 27th Street: Malicious destruction of property9pm. A man called to report that his wife repeatedly rammed his car with hers causing moderate damage to his vehicle. The incident was initially reported as a hit and run collision, however charges of malicious destruction of property against the woman are under investigation.

September 26th:

Arundel Road at Chillum Road: M/V collision – 11am. The driver of a 1991 Mazda was proceeding through the intersection on a green light. The driver of a 1998 Dodge Caravan failed to stop for the opposing red light and struck the Mazda in the intersection. The driver of the van was issued the appropriate citations.

3249 Rhode Island Avenue: Theft from auto – 12:30pm. The owner of a 1995 Ford F150 came into the police station to report that someone had stolen the rear tag off his vehicle. The owner said that he last saw the tag on his truck while he was in Montgomery County on the 25th. He noticed that it was missing this morning while in Mount Rainier.

2900 block of Allison Street: Burglary – 6:35pm. The resident told officers that she locked and secured her apartment this morning at about 8am. When she returned this evening she discovered that her bedroom had been ransacked and some of her jewelry and a quantity of cash were missing. There were no signs of forced entry into the apartment. The officers learned that the resident did not engage the entry door deadbolt when she left this morning; and, from prior investigations the officers are aware that the bottom lock can be defeated without leaving much evidence.

September 25th:

3500 block of Shepherd Street: Burglary – 3:10pm. Officers investigating the burglary determined that entry into the house was accomplished through a rear basement door. The resident responded and told officers that a significant amount of her jewelry had been stolen. PGPD detectives responded to assist with evidence collection and the follow-up investigation.

September 24th:

3200 block of Buchanan Street: Suspicious vehicle – 7:35pm. Officers responded to assist private security with a suspicious vehicle. Further investigation revealed that there were drugs in the vehicle. The driver of the vehicle told the officers that the drugs were medicine that had been prescribed for him. The CDS was seized and the officers told the driver that he needed to produce a valid prescription for the CDS within 48 hours or they would apply for a warrant charging him with possession of illegal narcotics.

September 23rd:

Nothing significant to report.

September 22nd:

3400 block of Taylor Street: Criminal citation – 12:35am. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for consuming an alcoholic beverage in public in a motor vehicle.

4200 block of 30th Street: Stolen vehicle (recovered) – 6:55pm. DC police called to notify MRPD officers that they recovered a 2003 Dodge Dakota reported stolen from Mount Rainier on September 20th. The vehicle was found in the 1700 block of 41st Street, NE. The vehicle’s tags were missing and it was not drivable. The owner was notified of the recovery.

The following information  comes courtesy  of the  New Jersey Cybersecurity & Communications Integration Cell Public cell phone charging stations supplied with power cables or USB ports located in stores, airports, libraries, and schools may seem like a convenient way to charge your mobile devices on-the-go, but can you be sure that your device and data will be safe if you connect? These kiosks can contain concealed computers that attempt to extract data such as contact information, photos, and videos from connected devices, unbeknownst to the users. Additionally, malicious or compromised charging stations can expose devices to the risk of a malware infection. Even if the charging station isn’t malicious, the manufacturer or owner of the kiosk may require users to input their email addresses or phone numbers in order to charge their devices, potentially exposing them to unwanted marketing campaigns, spam emails, and scam calls. H1N1 Influenza Information

With the outbreak of the H1N1 flu virus now affecting residents across the United States, and the possibility that some Maryland residents may have been infected with the disease, the Mayor & Council along with the MRPD deemed it wise to let Mount Rainier residents know of precautions that individuals should take in order to minimize the possibility of being infected by this virus. The most important precaution recommended by health officials is for individuals and families to take common sense, everyday actions to stay healthy.
