Front Porch Shoppers

Although they can happen year round, during this time of year thefts of packages always go up due to the amount of items being ordered via the Internet for holiday gift-giving.  The majority of these packages are delivered straight to the customer’s door, even if no one is home to accept them. Unfortunately, this is also brings out individuals who are looking for crimes of opportunity, the so called “front porch shoppers.” Criminals are known to actually target delivery trucks in neighborhoods. Thieves will follow or watch for FedEx, UPS, USPS and other delivery trucks and target a home after a delivery is made. To reduce the chances of being victimized by package delivery thieves, the Mount Rainier Police Department offers the following advice: ·          Request a signature confirmation of delivery. By doing this, the deliverer will have to wait until you’re available or deliver the package to a neighbor.  ·          Insure valuable items.  ·          Encourage you neighbors to watch

November 23 rd : 3200 block of Chillum Road : Burglary – 9:30am. The resident told officers that sometime between 12pm and midnight someone broke into her apartment and stole a game console and a quantity of U.S. Currency. Officers determined that the point of entry to the apartment was either through the front door where evidence revealed damage by some type of pry tool, or through a bathroom window that had been pried open. November 16 th : 3200 block of Varnum Street : Warrant service – 7:10am. Officers were called to the scene in regards to a man who had an open arrest warrant. When they arrived they encountered the man who further investigation revealed had an open arrest warrant for violation of probation. He was arrested on the warrant and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville. 3700 block of 34 th Street : Criminal citation – 7:50am. Police Report: November 3-9

November 9 th : 3700 block of Rhode Island Avenue : Criminal citation – 8:35am. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for possession of an open container of an alcoholic beverage. 3300 block of Chillum Road : Theft – 10:30am. The owner of a Mona model, white/green bicycle told officers that he parked his bike in the hallway of his apartment at about 10:20am. When he returned for the bike about 10 minutes later he discovered that it had been stole. There were no witnesses and no evidence. 3600 block of Perry Street : Criminal citation – 1:15pm. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for possession of an open container of an alcoholic beverage. 4600 block of 29 th Street : Vandalism – 1:20pm. The resident told officers that he returned home to discover that someone had damaged his bedroom window’s screen frame. Police Report: October 27 - November 2

November 2 nd : One Municipal Place : Disorderly conduct – 8:10am. Officers stopped a man to issue him a criminal citation for drinking in public. During the encounter the man became increasingly hostile and disorderly. Repeated attempts to get the man to calm down were unsuccessful and he was eventually arrested for disorderly conduct and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville. 3700 block of 36 th Street : MIR – 3:30pm. Officers on patrol observed an open window at a vacant house. Officers checked the house and although they did not find anyone inside there was evidence th
