Police Report: December 15-21

The Mount Rainier Police Department’s weekly report is not intended to be a listing of every incident or call for service handled by the police department, but merely a general summary of incidents that may be of interest to the community. December 21 st : 2700 block of Queens Chapel Road : Vehicle impound - 4:20am. Officers stopped a 2004 Chevy Malibu that had extensive rear end damage. The driver said, and officers confirmed, that the vehicle had been involved in a hit and run collision in DC. MPD officers documented the collision and let the owner drive away. The owner complained of injury and fire/rescue personnel responded and transported him to a local hospital for treatment. His vehicle was impounded for safekeeping. Santa Claus is Coming to Town

I just received confirmation from head elf Bernard that Santa will be making his pre-Christmas visit to Mount Rainier on Saturday December 21 st at 5pm. As in years past, Santa will be escorted by officers of the Mount Rainier Police Department and ride aboard a specially equipped fire truck from the Mount Rainier Fire Department. This will be one of Santa’s last personal appearances before he returns to the North Pole to rest up for Christmas Eve, so you won’t want to miss him! “You better watch out, you better not cry, you better not pout I’m telling you why – Santa Claus is coming to town.”

Police Report: December 8-14

December 14 th : 4600 block of 29 th Street : Burglary – 10:50am. The resident told officers that sometime between 7am on the 13 th and the time she called police someone broke into her apartment and stole a quantity of cash from her bedroom. Officers observed pry marks on the apartment door and believe that is how entry was made. Officers did not find the apartment ransacked and believe that someone the victim knows entered and removed the cash. 3300 block of Buchanan Street : Stolen vehicle – 1:30pm. Mount Rainier police look to put wrap on crime for holidays

Raisa Carmago, The Gazette Crime rates continue to plummet in Mount Rainier — continuing a decade-long trend — and police officials attribute public outreach and retaining police staff as key factors in the drop, an effort they anticipate continuing with the addition of four new officers. Police Chief Michael Scott said the city experienced a decrease in crimes and calls for service from January to November compared to the same time period in 2012. “I think it’s a combination of things,” Scott said at the Dec. 3 City Council meeting. “Our increased patrols ... analysis of where crime is occurring and strategically placing of our officers in those areas in those times and those places.” Part I crimes, which involves anything from theft, robbery or assault to homicide, decreased from 298 to 278 since last year, according to the police department statistics. While there were no homicides reported this year, burglaries - 57 - and thefts from motor vehicles - 38 - continue to be on the rise

Police Report: December 1-7

December 7 th : 3100 block of Queens Chapel Road : Missing person – 8am. Officers responded to take a report of a missing sixteen year old boy. Prior to the officers’ completing the report the boy returned home safe and sound. December 6 th : 4100 block of Rainier Avenue : Stolen vehicle – 8:35am. The owner of a 2002 Ford van told officers that he parked his vehicle outside his residence last night at about 10:30pm. When he returned to the van this morning he discovered that it had been stolen. No evidence or witnesses were identified. 3100 block of Chillum Road (7-11) : Theft – 12

Free cab rides available throughout holiday season from SoberRide

As reported by ABC7:   (WJLA) - The Washington Regional Alcohol Program will once again offer free cab rides throughout the holiday season. As they do during most major holidays all year, WRAP will run its SoberRide program between Dec. 13 and Jan. 1. The program offers up to $30 in free cab fare for those who need a ride home after drinking in the D.C. area. Nearly 2,000 people took advantage of SoberRide during the 2012 holiday season, officials say. The cab rides are available between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. every night starting on the 13th. Customers can call 1-800-200-TAXI to hail their ride.  

Police Report: November 24-30

November 30 th : 35 th and Perry Streets : Motor vehicle collision – 2:40am. Officers responded for the report of a single vehicle collision. When they arrived they discovered that a 2010 Toyota Rav 4 left the roadway and struck a utility pole. The driver of the vehicle did not have a valid license and was issued several traffic citations. The vehicle was not drivable after the collision and was impounded. 2700 block of Queens Chapel Road : Vehicle impound – 3pm. Officers patrolling with an automatic license plate reader received an alert on a 2005 Scion with suspended registration
