Police Report: March 30 - April 5

The Mount Rainier Police Department’s weekly report is not intended to be a listing of every incident or call for service handled by the police department, but merely a general summary of incidents that may be of interest to the community. Some reports may be outside the date parameters due to extended investigations or other circumstances. Some cases are not included at all due to ongoing investigations.

April 5th:

2300 block of Varnum Street (7-11): Emergency petition – 6:15am. Officers responded for the report of a man fighting with the store manager. When they arrived they found a man pulling on the front door trying to get inside the store. Officers attempted to get the man to calm down and leave the premises but he refused.  The officers were eventually compelled to deploy a Taser weapon to get the man under control and in custody. Further investigation revealed that he was under the influence of PCP. He was transported to Washington Adventist Hospital where he was released to medical personnel for treatment.

4500 block of 34th Street: Traffic/suspected retail theft – 11:30am. Officers stopped a 2008 Chrysler Sebring for a traffic violation. Further investigation revealed that the vehicle’s registration was suspended. Officers also located a large quantity of possibly stolen goods bearing Victoria’s Secret sales tags along with several New York & Company watches. None of the occupants of the vehicle could produce a sales receipt for the items. The property was photographed and recorded and a copy of the report was faxed to the Prince George’s County Police Retail Theft Unit. The vehicle was impounded for expired registration plates.

2500 block of Queens Chapel Road: Stolen auto – 12pm. The owner of a 2002 Honda Accord told officers that sometime between 9pm on April 3rd and the time he called police someone stole his vehicle. No evidence or witnesses were identified at the scene of the theft.

3300 block of Chillum Road: Citizen robbery/emergency petition – 1:40pm. Officers responded for the report of a man who had just stolen a woman’s purse and who was being detained by two citizens. When the officers arrived they learned that the man in question took the purse and fled after the woman refused to purchase cigarettes for him. She ran after the suspect yelling for him to stop and for someone to help her. Two concerned citizen intervened and detained the suspect until police arrived. The suspect appeared disoriented and did not know what day of the week it was. He admitted to the officers that he had smoked PCP. When the officers asked him how much he had used he replied “A lot.” The suspect was taken into custody and transported to Washington Adventist Hospital for where he was released to medical personnel for treatment. Charges for theft will be obtained.

April 4th:

3200 block of Shepherd Street: Vandalism to auto (x8) – Midnight. Officers responded for the report of multiple vehicles that had been vandalized. When the officers arrived one of the vehicle owners told them that she heard a loud bang and went to investigate the cause. She noticed that several vehicles parked along the block had had one or more of their tires flattened. She also saw a small dark colored newer model vehicle leaving the area as first responders were arriving on the scene. Officers identified eight vehicles that had been vandalized. A canvass of the area for the vehicle seen leaving the area was negative and no additional evidence was recovered.

34th Street and Rhode Island Avenue: Hit and run collision – 1:15pm. The driver of a 1994 Ford truck told officers that he stopped to yield the right of way to a vehicle already in the traffic circle. As he was stopped a second vehicle he described as a maroon colored SUV, possibly a Chevy Tahoe, struck him in the rear. The striking vehicle then went around the victim’s vehicle and fled west on 34th Street. The victim’s vehicle sustained minor damage to right rear bumper.

3200 block of Chillum Road: Vehicle impound – 4pm. Officers patrolling with a mobile license plate reader were alerted to a 2006 Hyundai Sonata that had a compulsory insurance violation and an MSP pick up order for the tags. The tags were seized for return to MVA and the vehicle was impounded.

April 3rd:

3400 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Criminal citation – 10:40am. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for possession of CDS paraphernalia.

3400 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Criminal citation – 11am. Officers issued each of two men a criminal citation for disorderly conduct (yelling obscenities at each other – both intoxicated).

April 2nd:

3100 block of Queens Chapel Road: CDS possession – 2am. Officers were flagged down by a citizen who had stopped to assist an intoxicated individual standing in the roadway. When the officers approached the intoxicated man he became disorderly and starting throwing crack cocaine out of his pockets. He was arrested, charged with CDS possession and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville.

4200 block of 34th Street: Traffic – 10:35am. Officers stopped a 1984 Ford truck for a traffic violation. Further investigation revealed that the driver had a suspended license. He was issued several traffic citations and his vehicle was impounded.

April 1st:

4200 block of Kaywood Drive: Vehicle impound – 8:10am. Officers impounded a 1998 Chevy Blazer for displaying expired out-of-state tags. The vehicle had been previously marked for 48-hour towing.

2700 block of Upshur Street: Vehicle impound – 8:45am. Officers impounded a 2007 Nissan Pathfinder for displaying expired out-of-state tags.

One Municipal Place: Criminal citation – 6:35pm. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for urinating on the sidewalk.

2900 block of Allison Street: Vandalism to auto – 10pm. The owner of a 2007 Dodge Charger told officers that when he heard the sounds of glass breaking coming from outside his apartment he went to investigate. He discovered the mirrors and all the windows of his vehicle had been smashed out. No evidence or witnesses were identified.

3100 block of Queens Chapel Road: Traffic – 11pm. Officers stopped a 2000 Toyota Rav4 for a traffic violation. Further investigation revealed that the driver had a suspended license. He was issued several traffic citations and his vehicle was impounded.

March 31st:

2700 block of Arundel Road: Criminal citation – 12:35am. Officers stopped a 2006 BMW for a traffic violation. As the officers approached the vehicle they smelled the odor of marijuana coming from inside. Further investigation revealed that the driver had smoked marijuana earlier and was in possession of a small amount of the drug. She was issued a criminal citation for the violation.

2900 block of Arundel Road: Theft of vehicle tags – 9am. The owner of a 2006 Honda Accord told officers that sometime between 4pm on March 30th and the time she called police someone stole both license plates off her vehicle. No evidence or witnesses were identified.

3200 block of Chillum Road: Stolen vehicle – 2:35pm. The owner of a 1997 Honda Accord told officers that he came home sick from work at about 1am on the 29th. He inadvertently left the keys in the ignition when he parked his car. He discovered his vehicle stolen on the 30th but didn’t notify police until today because of his illness.

3200 block of Queens Chapel Road: Lost property – 2:10pm. The victim told officers that he inadvertently left his cell phone on the Little Caesar’s sales counter after buying a pizza. When he went back to the store to retrieve his phone it was not there. Store employees told the victim and the officers that they did not have the phone. Officers made arrangements with the store’s regional manager to review the store’s security cameras for any additional information.

4300 block of 34th Street: Criminal citation – 9:10pm. Officer responded for the report of a person banging on doors creating a disturbance. When the officers arrived they located the man who was very intoxicated. He was issued a criminal citation for disorderly conduct and sent on his way.

2300 block of Varnum Street (7-11): Armed robbery – 11:35pm. A store clerk (victim) told officers that a black male wearing a dark/black colored coat entered the store approached the victim who was at the sales counter, displayed a handgun and demanded money. When victim opened the register the suspect went behind the counter and made the victim empty the register of approximately $50 dollars. The suspect then fled the store on foot towards Russell Avenue. PGPG robbery detectives responded to handle the follow-up investigation. A police K-9 tracked the suspect to the 4500 block of Russell Avenue before losing the track.

March 30th:

3200 block of Queenstown Drive: Domestic dispute – 3:55am. Officers responded for the report of a domestic dispute. When they arrived they encountered the male half who said that when he got home his wife accused him of being unfaithful and began hitting him. The officers spoke with the female half who said that her husband hit her when he got home and she hit him back. Both of them admitted to drinking earlier. The wife was transported to the District Court Commissioner’s Office where she obtained a non-vacate protective order against her husband.

3100 block of Webster Street: Stolen vehicle – 7:50am. The owner of a 2004 Ford Taurus reported that sometime prior to 11pm on the 29th someone stole her car. When the reporting officers checked to see if there was any record of the vehicle being impounded they learned that PGPD officers had towed the car from an address in Bowie around 3am this morning because it had been burned.
