REVISED Police Report April 6-12

The previous report omitted several incidents that occurred on April 10th and 11th. Those are included in this report.

The Mount Rainier Police Department’s weekly report is not intended to be a listing of every incident or call for service handled by the police department, but merely a general summary of incidents that may be of interest to the community. Some reports may be outside the date parameters due to extended investigations or other circumstances. Some cases are not included at all due to ongoing investigations.

April 12th:

3800 block of 35th Street: Criminal citation – 11am. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for possession of an open container of an alcoholic beverage in public.

3800 block of 35th Street: Criminal citation – 11am. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for possession of narcotics paraphernalia.

April 11th:

4200 block of 28th Street: Emergency petition – 1:30am. Officers responded for the report of a mother/daughter domestic. Once on the scene the officers learned that the mother was suffering from a mental disorder and was not coherent. She was transported to Washington Adventist Hospital and released to medical personnel for an emergency psychological evaluation.

3200 block of Queenstown Drive: Vehicle impound – 10am. Officers impounded a 2007 Audi A6 for displaying tags that expired over a year ago.

4500 block of 34th Street: Emergency petition – 11pm. Officers responded for the report of an unconscious man lying on the sidewalk. Officers found the man and when he was questioned he said that he jumped off the roof of Thomas Stone Elementary to kill himself because of family problems. Fire/rescue personnel transported him to Prince George’s Hospital where he was released to medical personnel for treatment of his injuries and for a psychological examination.

April 10th:

4400 block of 30th Street: Emergency petition – 1:20am. Officer responded for the report of a woman who was depressed and had slit her wrist in an attempt to harm herself. The officers found the woman emotionally distressed and suffering from very minor wounds. They took her into custody and transported her to a local hospital when she was released to medical personnel for examination and treatment.

35th and Perry Streets: Suspicious person – 8:05am. Officers responded for the report of a woman being threatened with a gun. The woman told the officers that she was stopped by an unknown light skinned black male wearing a white shirt and black pants with dreads driving a gray Volvo .The man asked her if she knew who was selling drugs in the area and when she replied that she didn’t know he said that he had a gun under the seat of his car. The woman said that she did not see a gun but ran back to her home to call police. The suspect was last seen driving away north on Perry Street. Officers searched the area for the suspect and his vehicle with negative results.

2800 block of Shepherd Street: Vehicle impound – 1:15pm. Officers patrolling with a license plate reader were alerted to a 2012 GMC Terrain that had a suspended registration for a compulsory insurance violation. The tags were seized for return to MVA and the vehicle was impounded.

3800 block of 37th Street: Vandalism to auto – 8:45am. The complainant told officers that he parked his rented Kia Optima by his residence at about 9pm on the 9th. When he came out for his vehicle this morning he discovered that the driver’s side mirror had been knocked off.

3400 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Criminal citation –Officers issued a man a criminal citation for drinking in public.

One Municipal Place: Criminal citation – 4:10pm. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for urinating in public.

30th Street and Arundel Road: Traffic – 10:15pm. Officers stopped a 1997 Nissan Altima for a traffic violation. Further investigation revealed that the driver’s West Virginia license was suspended. He was issued several traffic citations and his vehicle was impounded.

April 9th:

3400 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Traffic – 12:50am. Officers stopped a 2007 Chevy Cobalt for a traffic violation. Further investigation revealed that there was an MSP pick up order on file for the vehicle’s registration plates. The driver was cited for the traffic violation, the tags were seized for return to MVA and the vehicle was impounded.

3400 block of Newton Street: Theft from auto – 7:10am. The owner of a 2010 Infinity told officers that he came out to his vehicle this morning to find it up on blocks and all four wheels and tires missing. The theft occurred sometime between 8pm on the 8th and 6:30 this morning. No evidence or witnesses were identified.

4200 block of 28th Street: Hit and run collision – 10:25am. The owner of a 1999 Mercury Mountaineer told officers that sometime between 7pm on the 8th and 10am this morning his vehicle sustained damage to the front driver’s side. Officers examined the vehicle and determined that the damage was consistent with being struck by a second vehicle that left white paint on the victim’s vehicle. No additional evidence or witnesses were identified.

3800 block of 34th Street: Criminal citation (x2) – 12:45pm. Officers issued a man two criminal citations; one for drinking in public and another for urinating in public.

3400 block of Newton Street: Warrant service/CDS possession (x2) – 2pm. Officers responded for the report of a loud disturbance at a private residence. During the course of their investigation they learned that one of the individuals involved had an open arrest warrant through Prince Georges County for unauthorized removal of property. She was arrested and a search of her person incident to arrest revealed that she was in possession of marijuana. She was charged with CDS possession and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville. A second individual was stopped by officers as she tried to flee the residence when the officers arrived. She was also found to be in possession of marijuana and was arrested, charged with CDS possession and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville.

3300 block of Rhode Island Avenue: M/V collision – 5:30pm. Officers were flagged down in reference to a collision that had just occurred. Their subsequent investigation revealed that the driver of a 2003 GMC Yukon lost control of the vehicle and struck a utility pole. The driver of the vehicle sustained minor injury and was transported by fire/rescue personnel to the hospital for treatment. The vehicle was impounded.

April 8th:

3400 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Criminal citation – 8:45am. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for trespassing. The man had been warned against trespassing in the area both by written notice and verbally numerous times prior to receiving the citation.

4300 block of 28th Place: CDS possession – 10am. Officers responded for the report of a suspicious person sleeping in the basement of an apartment building. When they arrived they found the man described by the complainant. Further investigation revealed that he was in possession of synthetic marijuana (Scooby Snax) in a 4-gram bag. He was arrested, charged accordingly and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville.

2300 block of Varnum Street (7-11): Theft – 11:30am. A store employee told officers that a man came into the store and placed numerous items numerous items into his pants. He then walked slowly out of the store without paying for the items. He was last seen leaving the area up 22nd Avenue towards Queens Chapel Road in a black 4-door Jaguar with unknown Maryland tags.

One Municipal Place: Criminal citation – 12:55pm. Officers issued a woman a criminal citation for drinking in public.

4000 block of 32nd Street: Criminal citation (x2) – 3:40pm. Officers issued each of two men a criminal citation for possession of an open container of alcohol in a public place (in front of MRES).

4300 block of 28th Place: CDS possession – 10am. Officers responded for the report of a suspicious person sleeping in the basement of an apartment building. April 7th:

4000 block of 34th Street (Glut): Commercial armed robbery – 1:15pm. Store employees told officers that two individuals came into the store and posed as customers. After a brief period Suspect #1 walked up to the sales counter, produced a handgun and ordered the clerk to put her hands up and turn around. Suspect #2 walked behind the counter and took the cash drawer from the register and both suspects fled out of the store. The two were seen by a witness leaving the area in a gray or white small SUV with a partial Maryland tag of 725075. PGPD robbery detectives along with a forensics team responded to gather evidence and take over the follow up investigation.

Suspect #1 is described as a dark complected black male in his 20’s; 5’6” tall; 170 lbs; wearing a puffy jacket, a hat with a reflective sticker on bill, and jeans. Suspect #2 is described as a dark complected black male; B/M, 5’8” tall; of average build; wearing a hat with a gray bill, camouflage pants, a black top, and tan boots.

April 6th:

Buchanan Street and Queenstown Drive: Indecent exposure – 7:25am. The victim told officers that while she was walking along Buchanan Street towards Queenstown Drive she was approached by a man who asked her if she was working. The man proceeded to expose his genitals to the victim. She ran away from the suspect who chased her until another woman heard her yelling and came to assist her. The suspect got into a black passenger vehicle and fled the area. The victim described the suspect as a black male with brown eyes and short black hair wearing a black hat, a black jacket and light green pants.

3300 block of Shepherd Street: Vehicle impound – 8:30am. Officers impounded a 1999 Saab 95 for displaying registration plates that expired October 17, 2013.

29th and Shepherd Streets: M/V collision – 9:50am. Officers investigated a personal injury collision and determined that the driver of the at-fault vehicle ran the stop sign on 29th Street and collided with the victim’s vehicle on Shepherd. Both drivers were transported by fire/rescue personnel to MedStar for treatment of their non- life threatening injuries. Both vehicles were impounded for safekeeping and the at-fault driver was citied accordingly.

4000 block of 34th Street: Stolen vehicle – 9:45am. The owner of a 2003 Chevy Express told officers that he parked his vehicle at about 10pm on the 5th. When he returned for the vehicle this morning he discovered that it had been stolen. No evidence or witnesses could be identified.

25th Street and Arundel Road: Hit and run collision – 2:30pm. The owner of a 1995 Toyota Corolla showed officers where an unknown vehicle struck his Toyota while it was legally parked. There was minor damage to the Toyota and no evidence or witnesses were identified that would lead to the striking vehicle’s identification.

3200 block of Queens Chapel Road: Traffic – 10:50pm. Officers stopped a 2005 Lexus that failed to stop for and almost hit a pedestrian. Further investigation revealed that the driver’s license had been revoked in Maryland. He was issued several traffic citations and his vehicle was impounded.

H1N1 Influenza Information

With the outbreak of the H1N1 flu virus now affecting residents across the United States, and the possibility that some Maryland residents may have been infected with the disease, the Mayor & Council along with the MRPD deemed it wise to let Mount Rainier residents know of precautions that individuals should take in order to minimize the possibility of being infected by this virus.
