Police Report: May 18-24

The Mount Rainier Police Department’s weekly report is not intended to be a listing of every incident or call for service handled by the police department, but merely a general summary of incidents that may be of interest to the community. Some reports may be outside the date parameters due to extended investigations or other circumstances. Some cases are not included at all due to ongoing investigations.

May 24th:

3700 block of 36th Street: Assault – 10:50am. Officers responded for the report of a fight in progress. When they arrived they observed a man assaulting a male victim. Officers attempted to get the man to stop the assault without success and were forced to deploy a Taser weapon in order to get him under control and under arrest. Once the man was in custody the officers learned that he had also physically assaulted his sister prior to their arrival. The man was taken to a local hospital for a checkup and once cleared by medical personnel he was taken to DOC in Hyattsville where he was charged with two counts of 2nd degree assault and other charges. He was left in the custody of DOC.

4000 block of 34th Street: Criminal citation – 4:40pm. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for drinking in public.

4000 block of 36th Street: Burglary – 10:45pm. The resident told officers that they returned home to discover that someone had broken into her home and stole several personal and electronic items. The officers determined that entry was gained through an open upstairs window. Witnesses told the officers that at about 10:30pm they saw a Hispanic male, 18-20 years of age, walking around the victim’s home knocking on the windows. They then saw the suspect leave the area in a black Acura TL on Shepherd Street towards 34th Street.

May 23rd:

3200 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Traffic – 2:25pm. Officers stopped a 2002 Ford Explorer for a traffic violation. Further investigation revealed that the driver’s license was suspended and there was an MSP pick up order for the vehicle’s tags. The driver was issued several traffic citations and the vehicle was impounded.

One Municipal Place: Criminal citation – 4:40pm. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for drinking in public.

33rd Street and Bunker Hill Road: Criminal citation(x3) – 9:45pm. Officers issued each of three men a criminal citation for trespassing.

May 22nd:

3200 block of Perry Street: 2nd degree assault – 6:45am. Officers responded for the report of an assault in progress involving two Hispanic men. Once on the scene officers located and stopped the two finding both to be very intoxicated. Through an interpreter the officers learned that the two had argued about the cleanliness of their house. One of the men chased the other out of the house with what was described as a knife. During the chase the unarmed man ran into a wall and injured the side of his face. He was treated by fire/rescue personnel and released. The armed man was found not to have a knife, just a piece of plastic coated cable. He had a small knot on his forehead and fire/rescue transported him to a local hospital for treatment as a precaution. Both men were advised that, when they sobered up, they could exercise their options with a District Court Commissioner.

One Municipal Place: Criminal citation (x2) – 8:15am. Officers issued each of two men a criminal citation for drinking in public.

3100 block of Queens Chapel Road: Natural death – 12:15pm. Officers responded to check the welfare of a 79- year old woman who had not been seen in two days. Officers got a key to her apartment from management and upon entering found her sitting in a chair and unresponsive. Fire/rescue personnel responded, checked her vital signs and pronounced her dead at 12:35pm. The State Medical Examiner responded and determined that she died from natural causes. Officers determined that the decedent had no living relatives in the US so the Anatomy Board responded and took custody of the remains.

3700 block of 37th Street: Suspicious person – 12:55pm. Officers stopped an individual who was suspected of committing an indecent exposure. Further investigation revealed that he was suffering from schizophrenia and was on disability for the disease. He could not be positively identified as having committed any crime. Officers obtained his information and photo for further investigation and he was released.

4200 block of Russell Avenue: Trespassing – 2:45pm. Officers responded for the report of several juveniles banging on the front door of an apartment building. When the officers arrived they located two adults and nine juveniles trespassing in the building. All were issued warnings and the two adults were told to leave the property and released. Five of the juveniles were taken back to Northwestern HS and released to the school. The remaining four were taken home and released to their parents/guardians.

3400 block of Rhode island Avenue: Criminal citation – 8:50pm. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for urinating in public.

4000 block of 35th Street: Warrant service – 9:20pm. Officers patrolling the area due to resident complaints of drug dealing stopped two suspicious individuals for a field interview. During the interview they discovered that one of them had an open arrest warrant through the Prince George’s County Sheriff’s office for failing to appear in court on a charge of driving on a suspended license. He was arrested on the warrant and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville.

May 21st:

3200 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Criminal citation – 6:35am. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for possession of an open container of an alcoholic beverage.

3300 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Traffic – 9am Officers stopped a 2010 Chevy Camaro after observing that the tags were expired. Further investigation revealed that the vehicle’s insurance had been cancelled. The driver was issued the appropriate traffic citations and the vehicle was impounded.

3500 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Vehicle impound – 5:45pm. Officers patrolling with an automated license plate reader were alerted to a 2006 Ford had a suspended registration and an MSP pick up order for the tags. The tags were seized for return to MVA and the vehicle was impounded.

3100 block of Chillum Road: Loitering – 8:15pm. Officers were called to the store by the manager who complained that there were three suspicious individuals loitering out front. When the officers arrived the manager pointed out the three individuals in question and they were stopped for a field interview. None of them were wanted and they did not have any merchandise that belonged to 7-11. They were sent on their way after being warned against further loitering.

May 20th:

3200 block of Queenstown Drive: Miscellaneous incident (MIR) - 9:50pm. The owner of a 1999 Ford F150 truck told officers that his vehicle was towed by a private towing company on the 19th because it was parked blocking a fire lane. When he went to retrieve the vehicle from the tow company’s lot he discovered scratches in the paint along the driver’s side and passenger side rear fender. The tow company denied responsibility for the damage. The owner was advised that this was a civil matter and to speak with Queenstown Apartments management for possible resolution.

2700 block of Queens Chapel Road: Possession of a CDS with intent to distribute -  10:10pm. Officers stopped a 2004 Mercedes for a traffic violation. As they were speaking with the driver they smelled a strong odor of marijuana coming from inside the vehicle. Further investigation revealed that the driver was in possession of a large quantity of cash and 263 grams of marijuana having a street value of $5,260. The officers also recovered numerous clear glassine baggies known for packaging and selling marijuana and a small weight scale covered in marijuana residue. The money, drugs and paraphernalia were seized as evidence and the vehicle was impounded. The driver was arrested, charged with possession with intent to distribute a CDS and other charges and released to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville.

3400 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Warrant service – 7:20pm. Officers stopped to speak with a man who they knew had failed to appear in court on alcoholic beverage and obstruction charges. Further investigation revealed that the man had an open arrest warrant through Prince George’s County for failing to appear on those charges. He was arrested and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville.

May 19th:

3600 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Vandalism to auto – 7:30pm. The owner of a 2013 Honda Ridgeline told officers that back on the 17th there was a large party behind his residence with numerous individuals hanging around his vehicle. When he came out to his vehicle this evening he discovered scratches on the hood.

May 18th:

4700 block of 27th Street: Vandalism – 7:15am. The resident told officers that sometime between 8pm on the 17th and the time he called police someone threw a caulking gun through his apartment window. There was damage to the living room lower window pane and the outer screen above the window.

34th Street and Eastern Avenue: M/V collision – 1:30pm. The owner of a 2007 GMC truck was stopped on 34th Street waiting for the traffic signal to change. As she waited the Metro bus in front of her backed up and struck her vehicle causing minor damage.

Police Report: May 11-17

May 17th:

3200 block of Varnum Street: Assault – 8:30am. Officers arrested a 52- year old man who had pushed and assaulted his 79- year old mother. He was charged with assault and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville.

3400 block of Bunker Hill Road: Vehicle impound – 9:40am. Officers impounded a 2002 Nissan Altima because its registration expired in January 2014. There was also an MSP pick up order for the tags for an emissions violation.

3400 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Criminal citation – 2pm. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for urinating in public.

4300 block of 28th Place: Theft – 3:30pm. The resident told officers that that she was supposed to have a package delivered from the Post Office on May 15th 3pm but never received it. She checked with the mailman and he said that he left the package at her door when it was supposed to be delivered.

3500 block of Perry Street: Criminal citation – 4:40pm. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for drinking in public.

3400 block of Perry Street: Warrant service – 4:35pm. Officers stopped two individuals who appeared to be intoxicated. Further investigation revealed that one of the men had an open warrant through Prince George’s County for possession of marijuana and obstructing. He arrested and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville.

3700 block of 34th Street: Criminal citation – 6:20pm. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for drinking in public.

3100 block of Queens Chapel Road: Stolen vehicle – 6:45pm. The owner of a 2001 Dodge Caravan told officers that sometime between 5:30am this morning and the time she called police someone stole her vehicle. No evidence or witnesses were identified.

3100 block of Chillum Road: Suspicious situation – 9:30pm. Officers responded to assist Queenstown security with a juvenile they had detained outside the 7-11. Security told the officers that they saw the juvenile discard a handgun he had concealed on his person. The gun turned out to be a plastic toy gun. The juvenile was also found in possession of a GPS unit that was stolen from an automobile in DC about two months ago. PGPD robbery detectives responded to the scene to conduct a more thorough follow up investigation and took custody of the juvenile. MRPD officers contacted the owner of the GPS to let him know how to retrieve his property.

Bunker Hill Road at 34th Street: Hit and run collision – 3:50am. The owner of a 2006 Honda Accord told officers that she was awakened by the sound of a vehicle collision and her vehicle alarm going off. She victim went outside to investigate and found that her vehicle had been struck by an unknown vehicle that failed to remain at the scene.

May 16th:

4200 block of Kaywood Drive: Vehicle impound – 11:15am. Officers patrolling with automatic license plate reader were alerted to a 1999 Toyota Camry that had a suspended registration and an MSP pick up order for the tags. The vehicle was impounded and the tags seized for return to MVA.

2700 block of Webster Street: Vehicle impound – 11:45am. Officers patrolling with automatic license plate reader were alerted to a 2003 Chevy Malibu that had a suspended registration and an MSP pick up order for the tags. The vehicle was impounded and the tags seized for return to MVA.

One Municipal Place: Warrant service – 1:10pm. Officers on foot patrol observed a subject with an open alcoholic container. Upon further investigation it was learned that the subject had an open arrest warrant out of Prince George’s County for violation of probation. He was arrested and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville.

2700 block of Queens Chapel Road: Warrant service – 1:45pm. Officers stopped to issue an occupied vehicle a parking citation. Further investigation revealed that the occupant had an open arrest warrant out of Charles County for failing to appear in court. She was arrested and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville. The vehicle was impounded for safekeeping.

4000 block of Cedar Lane Alley: Warrant service – 6:25pm. Officers responded for the report of a group of subjects drinking. The officers found four individuals drinking, two of which were on private property. The other two were given warnings. One of the four was found to have an open warrant through Prince George’s County for hindering and obstructing. He was arrested on the warrant and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville.

May 15th:

3200 block of Chillum Road: Burglary– 12:37am. The resident told officers that he came home to discover that a piece of jewelry was missing. As he was looking through his apartment for the item he discovered several other items missing. Officers found no evidence of forced entry into the victim’s apartment. He told the officers that he always leaves a key above his door because his father gets locked out often. The key, he said, was not where he had left it. Officers did not recover any evidence and a canvass of the building failed to identify any witnesses. The victim believes that contract painters working in the building are responsible for the crime. PGPD detectives were advised of the crime and will be assisting with a follow-up investigation.

3300 block of Chillum Road (7-11): Theft – 3:15am. The store clerk told officers that two unidentified black males walked into the store, helped themselves to several food items and left store without paying for them. The men were last seen walking towards Queens Chapel Road.

3400 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Criminal citation – 9:20am. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for drinking in public.

3100 block of Queens Chapel Road (Advanced Auto Parts): Theft – 12:20pm. Store employees told officers that two black males walked into the store, grabbed numerous items and fled the store without paying for them. The two suspects were last seen leaving the parking lot in a vehicle and the employees were unsure if a third suspect was driving.

3100 block of Queens Chapel Road: Criminal citation – 3pm.  Officers responded to assist Queenstown security personnel with a suspicious person. Further investigation revealed that the man in question was in possession of a small amount of suspected cocaine. He was issued a criminal citation for the violation, banned from the property and sent on his way.

3700 block of Rhode Island Avenue: M/V collision – 9:10pm. Officers responded to assist fire/rescue personnel with a traffic collision with injuries. When the officers arrived medics were attending to the driver of a 2001 Ford F150 truck that had collided with a tree and struck a parked vehicle. Further investigation revealed that the driver’s failure to properly control his vehicle contributed to the collision. The officer also learned that the driver’s license was suspended. Once medics determined that the driver did not need further medical attention officers arrested him for the license violation and delivered him to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville. His vehicle was impounded. The owner of the vehicle that was struck responded to the scene and was given all pertinent information.

May 14th:

4600 block of 25th Street: Vandalism to auto – 6:15am. The owner of a 2002 Ford F250 told officers that sometime between 3pm on the 13th and 5:15 this morning someone pulled out the fuel hose to the gas pump mounted in the bed of the truck and sprayed fuel on the truck. The fuel pump switch was also found damaged. No additional damage was discovered and the vehicle was otherwise operable.

3100 block of Queens Chapel Road: Warrant service – 11:14pm. Officers responded to assist Queenstown security personnel with a trespasser. Further investigation revealed that the man in question had an open warrant through the Prince Georges County Sheriff’s Office for theft over $1,000. He was arrested in the warrant and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville.

May 13th:

3100 block of Chillum Road (7-11): Commercial robbery – 3:50am. Officers spoke with the store clerk who said that about 15 minutes before the police responded a black male entered the store and placed his belt in the door hinge to prop the door open. The suspect then approached the sales counter with his hand in his pocket as if he had a gun.  The suspect demanded the cash from the register and a pack of Newport cigarettes. The clerk complied with the suspect’s demands whereupon the suspect fled the store. As he was leaving the suspect stole the cell phone accessory display case next to the entrance door. The suspect was last seen in a dark colored 4-door sedan driving towards Queens Chapel Road and on to Hyattsville. PGPD robbery detectives along with a forensics team responded to take over the investigation and gather evidence.

4200 block of Russell Avenue: Theft from auto – 1:50pm. The owner of a 2005 Toyota Camry told officers that sometime between 8pm on May 9th and 6:30am on the 10th someone stole the expiration sticker off the rear tag.

2400 block of Arundel Road: Burglary – 3:30pm. Officers responded for the report of a burglary that had occurred earlier. The resident came home to discover his apartment door partially open and waited for police to respond before entering. Officers checked the apartment and found no one inside but did observe that it had been rummaged through with closet and drawers open and various things tossed about. The resident noted that numerous electronic items had been stolen along with jewelry and shoes. PDPD detectives responded to conduct a follow-up investigation and the residence was processed for evidence.

3300 block of Chillum Road: Suspicious person – 5:25pm. Officers responded to talk with the father of a 10-year old boy. The man told officers that on May 12th an Hispanic male wearing blue pants and a white shirt with white print grabbed his son’s arm while the boy was walking home from school. The boy got scared and ran home to his mother’s house. He was unharmed in the incident. The mother did not report the incident to police due to custody issued with the father.  

3100 block of Queens Chapel Road: Criminal citation – 9:15pm. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for trespassing.

4400 block of 28th Place: Burglary – 10:25pm. The resident returned home to discover damage to her apartment’s door frame. Once inside she found the apartment ransacked and several electronic items and a quantity of jewelry had been stolen. Officers determined that the resident did not lock the top deadbolt lock when she left home this morning and those responsible were able to defeat the lower lock to gain entry.

4600 block of 29th Street: Armed robbery – 11:25pm. The victim told officers that while walking home from the West Hyattsville Metro station he noticed an older model gold Toyota drive up to him and stop. Suspects 1 and 2 got out of the vehicle, displayed handguns and demanded his property. The victim complied whereupon both suspects got back into the Toyota and fled the scene towards Varnum Street making good their escape. PDPD detectives responded to interview the victim and conduct a follow-up investigation

Suspect 1: B/M, 20’s, 5’11”, 180lbs, short hair, mustache, dark complexion, white t-shirt, shorts, Bucket hat, silver/black handgun

Suspect 2: B/M, 20’s, 6’0”, 200-215lbs, dreads, medium complexion, white t-shirt, jeans

Suspect 3: B/M (NFD) – remained in the vehicle during the robbery

Suspect 4: B/M driver of vehicle (NFD) – remained in the vehicle during the robbery

May 12th:

4300 block of Russell Avenue: Warrant service – 8:30am. Officers patrolling with an automatic license plate reader were alerted that the owner of an unoccupied vehicle had an open warrant for second degree assault. The warrant was confirmed through Communications and they were able to provide the address for the owner. Officers went to the address, located the owner and arrested him on the warrant. He was delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville.

One Municipal Place: Criminal citation – 12:20pm. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for drinking in public.

3000 block of Arundel Road: Service of a peace order – 5:45pm. Officers were flagged down by a man who needed assistance with the service of a peace order against another man who lived in his apartment. Officers located and served the order on the respondent. He gathered his personal belongings and left without further incident.

4400 block of 31st Street: Emergency petition – 8:50pm. Officers responded for the report of a woman who was contemplating suicide. The officers spoke with the woman’s husband and learned that she had overdosed on her prescribed depression medication and was intoxicated. She stating that she wanted to go to sleep and not wake up. The woman was taken into custody and transported to Washington Adventist Hospital where she was released to medical personnel for an emergency psychiatric examination.

May 11th:

3100 block of Queens Chapel Road: Attempt citizen robbery – 11:50am. MRPD officers along with officers from the Hyattsville City Police Department and the Prince George’s County Police Department responded for the report of a citizen robbery. Upon arrival, patrol officers spoke with the victim who advised that he encountered Suspect #2 in the 3200 block of Hamilton Street. The victim and suspect #2 arranged a meeting for the victim to purchase marijuana from suspect #2. The victim and suspects #1 and #2 began walking to the 3100 block of Queens Chapel Road. Once there, Suspect #3 arrived carrying a black bag. Suspect #3 pulled an Uzi-style firearm from the bag and attempted to rob the victim. The victim struggled over the firearm with Suspect #3 whereupon all three suspects fled the scene on foot leaving the black bag behind. A search of the bag revealed that there was no firearm inside. A Hyattsville City Police Department K-9 unit responded and conducted a track which ended in the 3300 block of Buchanan Street. An investigator from PGPD’s Northern Regional Investigation Division responded to the scene and began the follow-up investigation. The black bag that was left at the scene was recovered as evidence. There was no property stolen from the victim and he suffered only minor injuries. The investigation is ongoing.

3100 block of Queens Chapel Road: Criminal citation – 1:10pm. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for trespassing. He had been previously barred from the property.

Police Report: May 4-10

The Mount Rainier Police Department’s weekly report is not intended to be a listing of every incident or call for service handled by the police department, but merely a general summary of incidents that may be of interest to the community. Some reports may be outside the date parameters due to extended investigations or other circumstances. Some cases are not included at all due to ongoing investigations.

May 10th:

Rhode Island Avenue and Eastern Avenue: Emergency petition – 1:10am. Officers responded to assist fire/rescue personnel with a man who had been found unconscious and was under the influence of K2 spice and a fifth alcohol. The man had become uncontrollable in the back of an ambulance and officers were forced to deploy a Taser to get him under control and under arrest. Once he was secured fire/rescue personnel transported him to Washington Hospital Center where he was released to medical personnel for treatment.

4200 block of Russell Avenue: Property damage – 4:15am. Officers responded for the report of a large, old tree that toppled over onto several cars. When the officers arrived they discovered an approximately 100 year old, 20-ton oak tree blocking the entire roadway.  Six vehicles were damaged, some with minor damage and some a total loss. Mount Rainier Public Works was notified along with Kaywood Gardens management. Kaywood management contacted a tree service to remove the tree.

3400 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Criminal citation – 12:05pm. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for drinking in public.

3400 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Criminal citation – 6:45pm. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for urinating in public.

May 9th:

3800 block of 34th Street: Criminal citation – 7:30am. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for urinating in public.

2700 block of Queens Chapel Road: domestic assault - 8:05am. Officers responded for the report of a domestic dispute in progress. When they arrived they encountered a husband and wife who had been engaged in a verbal argument over finances. The argument turned physical when the husband struck his wife. He was arrested, charged with 2nd degree domestic assault and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville.

3400 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Criminal citation – 6:15pm. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for drinking in public.

One Municipal Place: Criminal citation – 6:15pm. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for disorderly conduct.

3400 block of Rhode Island Avenue: CDS possession – 7:15pm. Officers stopped an intoxicated man for a field interview. During the interview he became combative and screamed obscenities causing passersby to stop to observe his actions. He was arrested for disorderly conduct and a search incident to arrest revealed that he was in possession of a plastic bag containing a small amount of marijuana. He was charged with disorderly conduct and possession of a CDS and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville.

3100 block of Queens Chapel Road: Criminal citation – 7:50pm. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for drinking in public.

4200 block of 28th Street: Criminal citation – 9:40pm. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for drinking in public.

3800 block of Eastern Avenue: Theft from auto – 10:45pm. The owner of a 2007 Cadillac DTE told officers that sometime between 6:30pm this evening and the time she called police someone stole all four wheels and tires off her vehicle. In addition, those responsible broke into the vehicle through the driver’s door and stole the owners purse and other valuables. No evidence or witnesses could be identified.

May 8th:

4000 block of 36th Street: 2nd degree assault – 11:50am. The victim told officers that she was approached by a black male with gray and black hair wearing a blue baseball cap, blue jacket and blue jeans. Without warning or provocation the man punched her in the face and ran down 36th Street towards Shepherd. She sustained a small cut to the left side of her mouth and a small cut on the inside of her left cheek. The victim said that she believes that a neighbor may have had something to do with this assault. Officers interviewed the neighbor, who denied any involvement.

3700 block of 34th Street: Stolen vehicle – 1:05pm. The reporting person told officers that he parked a friend’s 2003 Ford Explorer at about 10:30pm on May 7th. When he returned for the vehicle this afternoon he discovered that it had been stolen. The vehicle’s owner was notified and confirmed that the reporting person was authorized to have the vehicle and that he was the only person to have the keys. No further evidence or witnesses were identified.

4300 block of 28th Place: Theft – 6:35pm. The victim told officers that he let a friend stay at his apartment overnight. When he woke up this morning he discovered several items of his personal property, a debit card and a quantity of cash missing and his friend gone. The case remains under investigation.

3000 block of Queens Chapel Road: Stolen vehicle – 10:10pm. The owner of a 2001 Honda Accord told officers that sometime between 2pm this afternoon and the time he called police someone stole his vehicle from in front of his residence. The victim could not remember if he locked the car or left the keys inside.

May 7th:

4300 block of Russell Avenue: Theft from auto – 3:25pm. The owner of a 1997 Honda CRV told officers that sometime between 1am this morning and the time she called police someone broke the right front window of her vehicle to get inside. May 6th:

3400 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Criminal citation - 8:40am. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for drinking in public.

3200 block of Queens Chapel Road: Vandalism to auto – 8:30am. The owner of a 2008 Chevy Impala told officers that she came out to her vehicle this morning to discover that someone had scratched the passenger side front door.

2300 block of Varnum Street (7-11): Theft – 9:15pm. The store clerk told officers that a black male 25-30 years of age entered the store, walked to the back counter, took three sandwiches and two bags of chips and left the store without paying for them. The clerk last saw the suspect walking towards the Kaywood Apartments complex.

May 5th:

3300 Buchannan Street: Vandalism to auto – 9:35am. The owner of a 2000 Toyota Camry told officers that sometime between 8:30pm on the 4th and the time she called police someone broke off the passenger side rear view mirror. No evidence or witnesses were identified.

4500 block of 31st Street: Vehicle impound – 12:45pm. Officers impounded a 1993 Lexus for violation of the City 48-hour parking restriction.

3249 Rhode Island Avenue (MRPD): Disorderly – 1:10pm. A man came into the police station lobby and began yelling and screaming at the civilian employees in the Records office. Officers responded and after numerous attempts to get the man calmed down were forced to deploy as Taser to get him under control and under arrest. He was charged with disorderly conduct and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville.

May 4th:

4200 block of Russell Avenue: Violation of a peace order – 3:30am. A woman called to report that a man against whom she had a peace order had come to her apartment. Officers responded, located the man on the premises and arrested him for violating the order. He was delivered to the custody of DOC without incident.

2200 block of Varnum Street (Family Dollar): Attempted theft – 7:30pm. The store clerk told officers that a man came into the store, took a pair of hair clippers and concealed them in his clothing. When the clerk challenged him he became irate and started to yell at the clerk. After a brief verbal altercation the man put the clippers back and left the store. He was last seen leaving the parking lot in an older model Ford pickup truck.

Glut Robbery Update

The Mount Rainier Police today received information from PGPD CID detectives that they have obtained an arrest warrant for Erick Clarence Jackson of the 2200 block of Otis Street, NE DC in connection with the April 7th armed robbery of Glut. Mr. Jackson is currently being held in DC on a separate charge of armed robbery that occurred in the District. He will be transferred to Prince George’s County when he is released from custody in DC. The second suspect in the Glut robbery has not yet been identified.

Police report: April 27 - May 3

The Mount Rainier Police Department’s weekly report is not intended to be a listing of every incident or call for service handled by the police department, but merely a general summary of incidents that may be of interest to the community. Some reports may be outside the date parameters due to extended investigations or other circumstances. Some cases are not included at all due to ongoing investigations.

May 3rd:

4300 block of 28th Place: Hit and run collision – 1:35am. The owner of a 1999 Toyota Camry told officers that he came out to his vehicle and found damage to the front end. A witness stopped and told him that they had seen a gold colored Chevy Suburban back into his vehicle. No further evidence was identified and the witness failed to identify themselves before leaving the scene.

4000 block of 34th Street: Vehicle impound – 9:45am. Officers impounded a 1999 Saab 95 for displaying tags that expired in October of 2013.

2700 block of Webster Street: Vehicle impound – 11am. Officers impounded a 2009 Chevy Traverse for displaying temporary tags that expired in November of 2013.

3200 block of Chillum Road: Hit and run collision – 11:10am. The owner of a 2000 Nissan Maxima told officers that he came out to his vehicle this morning to discover damage to the vehicle’s front driver’s side corner. The damage was consistent with a hit and run by a second, unknown vehicle.

3400 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Warrant service – 12:50pm. Officers stopped to check the welfare of a man sleeping or passed out at the bus stop. Further investigation revealed that he was intoxicated and had an open arrest warrant for failing to appear in court on a trespassing charge. He was arrested on the warrant and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville.

4000 block of 32nd Street: Citizen robbery – 6:55pm. Officers responded for the report of a robbery that had just occurred. When the officers arrived they learned that several juveniles were playing basketball at MRES when one of them was approached by an older juvenile who demanded that he remove his shirt and shoes. When the victim refused the suspect assaulted him and took his property by force. The suspect then threatened to burn the victim with a lighter unless he would empty his pockets. The victim complied and the suspect took a quantity of US Currency and his cell phone before fleeing the school on foot. Members of the victim’s family were able to locate and detain the suspect until police arrived. The suspect was arrested and charged accordingly.

2200 block of Varnum Street: Medical emergency – 10:35pm. Officers responded for the report of a man possibly having a heart attack. When they arrived they learned that fire/rescue personnel had already taken the man to a local hospital for treatment of a serious heart attack. Officers later learned that he was pronounced dead at the hospital. Officers assisted in securing the decedent’s vehicle and with transporting his family to the hospital.

May 2nd:

3200 block of Arundel Road: Vehicle impound – 9:10am. Officers impounded a 2000 Toyota Avalon for not displaying registration plates and having a suspended registration.

4200 block of Kaywood Drive: Theft from auto – 5:30pm. The owner of a 1996 Toyota Camry told officers that sometime between 3am this morning and the time he called police someone stole the front tag off his vehicle.

3400 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Criminal citation – 7pm. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for drinking in public. After receiving the citation he attempted to get into a vehicle and drive away. The officers advised him that it would not be in his best interest to drive a vehicle in his condition and he left the area on foot. A few minutes later the officers heard a woman scream and observed the man assault a woman, punching her several times. When the officers intervened they learned that he had asked the woman to drive his vehicle and began assaulting her when she refused. The man was arrested, charged with 2nd degree assault and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville. His vehicle was impounded.

3800 block of 35th Street: Criminal citation – 8:30pm. Officers on bicycle patrol came across a man drinking an alcoholic beverage in public. He was issued a criminal citation and sent on his way.

3800 block of 35th Street: Emergency petition - 10:10pm.  Officers responded for the report of a group of men fighting. When the officers arrived they found that most of the men had fled the area, however two remained. Both men were intoxicated and one was suffering from lacerations to the face and head. He was unable to answer simple questions and refused medical treatment.  Because of the nature of his condition the officers took him into custody and transported him to a local hospital where he was turned over to medical personnel for treatment of his injuries. The second man was sent on his way without incident. About forty minutes later officers were called back to the area for the report of damage to a 2013 Toyota Prius. The owner of the vehicle said that during the fight one of the men kicked his vehicle causing part of the molding to crack. There was no way to determine which of the men caused the damage.

3000 block of Queens Chapel Road: Trespassing/vandalism – 11:05pm. Officers responded for the report of a man that had just smashed out the glass of the front doors to the Rainier Manor building. Further investigation revealed that a known trespasser was denied entry to the building by a family member. The subject became angry and kicked in the door glass and broke the door frame. The man entered the building but had fled the area by the time the officers arrived. It was also learned that the man has two outstanding warrants now for failing to appear in court on trespassing charges. Officers are in the process of charging him with an additional count of trespassing and destruction of property.

May 1st:

3100 block of Queens Chapel Road: Criminal citation – 9:25pm. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for drinking in public.

April 30th:

3400 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Traffic – 6am. Officers stopped a 2003 Cadillac for a traffic violation. Further investigation revealed that the driver’s license was suspended. She was issued the appropriate traffic citations and her vehicle was impounded.

Queens Chapel Road and 25th Street: M/V collision – 9:05am. The driver of a 2003 Toyota Prius failed to yield the right of way to a 1994 Chevy van causing the collision. A female passenger in the Prius was transported to a local hospital for a checkup after sustaining minor injuries. Both vehicles were able to be driven from the scene.

April 29th:

4200 block of Kaywood Drive: Theft from auto – 12pm. The owner of a 1989 Chevy Caprice told officers that sometime between 11pm on the 28th and 7am this morning someone removed the cover off his car and stole the rear historic license plate.

April 28th:

4500 block of Eastern Avenue: Commercial robbery – 3:05am. Officers received a call for an individual acting hysterically. Upon arrival officers found the store clerk standing outside the store. It was learned while the store clerk was sleeping on the floor behind the register four black males pulled up to the store in a white Ford pickup truck. Three suspects using pry tools gained entry into the store. The suspects also pried open the door to the cashier’ station where they encountered the victim. The suspects assaulted the victim and two suspects removed one of the store’s ATM. The suspects also stole an unknown amount of money from the cash register and the suspects stole an unknown amount of cigarettes. PG County CID was notified and EMS treated the victim on the scene for minor injuries to his head. The suspects fled in an unknown direction of travel.

Suspect #1: B/M, 21-25, 5’10”, 150 lbs, black mask, black gloves, all dark clothing, black semi-automatic handgun

Suspect #2: B/M, 20-21, 5’7”, 160 lbs, black mask, black gloves, all dark clothing

Suspect #3: B/M, all dark clothing, red gloves

Suspect #4: Unknown (remained in vehicle)

Weapon: Black semi-automatic handgun, yellow crow bar, large screwdriver

Suspect Vehicle: 2003-2009 white 4Dr Ford F250, unknown tags

3700 block of 34th Street: Recovered stolen auto – 7:45am. Officers responded for the report of a partially disassembled vehicle blocking the roadway. Upon arrival they found a 1994 Nissan ZX in the roadway that had been partially stripped. Further investigation revealed that the vehicle was reported stolen from an address in DC back on April 18th. There were signs that the vehicle had been pushed off of Eastern Avenue onto 34th Street before it was abandoned. The vehicle was impounded and DC police was notified of the recovery.

2300 block of Varnum Street (7-11): Warrant service – 3:15pm. Officers on patrol observed a man in a vehicle who they knew had an open arrest warrant through Prince Georges County for violation of a peace order. When the vehicle stopped at the 7-11 the officers approached the vehicle and arrested him without incident. He was delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville.

April 27th:

3500 block of Newton Street: Criminal citation (x6) – 12:45am. Officers issued each of six men a criminal citation for drinking in public.

3200 block of Rhode Island Avenue (Oasis Food Market): Open door – 1:25pm. Officers responded for the report of a suspicious situation and upon arrival found the business’s door unsecured. Officers checked the interior of the store and found no issues. The store was secured and management contacted.

4300 block of 34th Street: Traffic – 2:45pm. Officers stopped a 2007 Chevy Cobalt for a traffic violation. Further investigation revealed that the driver was under the influence of marijuana and in possession of drug paraphernalia. He was issued the appropriate traffic citations and a criminal citation for drug paraphernalia. His vehicle was impounded.

3700 block of 37th Street: Criminal citation (x2) – 4:10pm. Officers issued a woman two criminal citations, one for possession of two marijuana cigarettes and one for possession of narcotics paraphernalia.
