Police Report: June 1-7

The Mount Rainier Police Department’s weekly report is not intended to be a listing of every incident or call for service handled by the police department, but merely a general summary of incidents that may be of interest to the community. Some reports may be outside the date parameters due to extended investigations or other circumstances. Some cases are not included at all due to ongoing investigations.

June 7th:

3100 block of Queens Chapel Road: EPS – 7:30am. Officers responded for the report of an individual with known mental issues acting erratic and possibly off his medication. When the officers arrived they determined that the man was in need of medical attention and transported him to Washington Adventist Hospital for a medical evaluation.

3400 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Criminal citation – 2pm. Officers issued a man criminal citations for disorderly conduct and possession of an open alcoholic beverage in a motor vehicle.

Case Number: 14-1393

3400 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Criminal citation – 2pm. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for trespassing.

3300 block of Chillum Road: Warrant service – 8pm. Officers stopped a 2001 Ford truck for a traffic violation. Further investigation revealed that the driver had a suspended license and an open arrest warrant through MSP for the same violation. He was charged accordingly, arrested on the warrant and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville. His vehicle was impounded for safekeeping.

June 6th:

3900 block of Bunker Hill Road: Possession of synthetic marijuana - 8am. Officers stopped two suspicious individuals for a field interview. During the interview one of the men was found in possession of synthetic marijuana and a concealed deadly weapon (knife). He was arrested, charged accordingly and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville.

3900 block of Bunker Hill Road: Traffic – 11:30am. Officers stopped a vehicle for a traffic violation. Further investigation revealed that the driver did not have a license. She was issued the appropriate citations and her vehicle was impounded.

3200 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Criminal citation – 1:30pm. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for drinking in public.

One Municipal Place: CDS arrest – 1:45pm. Officers stopped a man who they observed drinking an alcoholic beverage. While speaking with the man the officers determined that he was possibly under the influence of heroin. Further investigation revealed that he was in possession of ¼ gram of heroin and drug paraphernalia. He was arrested, charged accordingly and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville.

3300 block of Chillum Road: Traffic – 8:10pm. Officers stopped a vehicle for a traffic violation. Further investigation revealed that the driver did not have a license. He was issued the appropriate citations and her vehicle was impounded.

June 5th:

3700 block of 36th Street: Vehicle impound – 8:40am. Officers impounded a 2002 Acura TL that had West Virginia license plates that expired in February of 2013.

3400 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Emergency petition – 9:15am. Officers responded for the report of a suspicious female at the bus stop. When the officers arrived they saw the woman walking in and out of traffic talking to herself. The officers were forced to physically take the woman into custody to keep her from injuring herself. Fire/rescue personnel responded and transported her to Washington Adventist Hospital for an emergency psychiatric/medical examination.

3700 block of Bunker Hill Road: Theft – 8:50pm. The reporting person told officers that she left the keys to her vehicle on the roof of the vehicle when she went into her house to retrieve her child’s car seat.  When she got back to the car she discovered that her keys had been stolen. No witnesses to the theft could be located.

Queenstown Drive and Chauncey Place: Criminal citation (x2) – 11:45pm. Officers issued each of two men a criminal citation for trespassing. Both men had been previously banned from the property.

June 4th:

3600 block of Oak Lane: Vehicle impound – 8:55am. Officers impounded a 2003 Ford Explore for displaying expired registration plates. The plates expired in September of 2013.

4000 block of 29th Street: Vehicle impound – 10:25am. Officers impounded a 1998 Lincoln Town Car for failing to display registration plates.

4200 block of 29th Street: Vehicle impound – 11am. Officers impounded a 1994 Nissan Pathfinder that was found to be unregistered and displaying tags that were not valid.

2900 block of Arundel Road: Stolen vehicle – 2:30pm. The owner of a 2001 Dodge Caravan told officers that sometime between 7pm on the 3rd and the time he called police someone stole his vehicle. No evidence or witnesses were found.

3100 block of Queens Chapel Road: Warrant service – 2pm. Officers responded to the Beauty Depot for the report of a theft in progress. When they arrived they were told that two females came into the store and attempted to steal two hair pieces. The two left the store and were located by the officers and stopped for questioning. The officers learned that one of the women had an open warrant out of DC for violation of probation that was filed prior to her turning 18. She was arrested on the warrant and delivered to the custody of the girl’s detention facility in Laurel pending extradition to DC.

4200 block of 28th Street: Fraud – 2:30pm. The victim told officers that he was contacted by his financial institution and advised that someone used his debit card at various locations spending over $1,500. The victim confirmed for the bank that the transactions were not made by him and the bank canceled the card.

4000 block of 33rd Street: Theft – 7:10pm. Officers responded to check the welfare of the female occupants of a vehicle. When the officers arrived they confirmed that the females were fine. However they also learned that one of the girls had her cell phone and some currency stolen from her purse by an acquaintance earlier in the day. Officers documented the incident and advised her to seek charges at the court commissioner.

June 3rd:

3800 block of 34th Street: Criminal citation – 1:15pm. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for possession of a small amount of marijuana.

3100 block of Queens Chapel Road (Advanced Auto): Criminal citation – 2:30pm. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for trespassing.

3400 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Criminal citation – 3:45pm. Officers issued a man two criminal citations – one for urinating in public and one for possession of an open container of an alcoholic beverage.

3200 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Fraud – 7:10pm. The victim came into the police station to report that on or about May 30-31 her credit card was used without her authorization at a 7-11 in Mount Rainier. She provided a copy of the transaction for verification. A police report documenting the theft was completed so that VISA’s fraud department could investigate the incident.

4000 block of 34th Street (ZZ Pizza): Disorderly – 9:35pm. Officers responded for the report of a disorderly man inside the restaurant. The store manager told the officers that the man tried to obtain food without paying for it. When asked to pay for his order the suspect became belligerent and started throwing items around in the store. The suspect was located about a block away and arrested for disorderly conduct.

June 2nd:

3200 block of Queenstown Drive: 1st degree domestic assault - 9:25am. The victim told officers that her boyfriend, uninvited, came into her apartment with her spare keys and began to hit her with an open hand and choked her almost to the point of unconsciousness. After pleading with the suspect to let her go to work, he allowed her to leave the apartment but said, “If you change the locks on the door or go to the Police, I will kill you.” MRPD officers completed a domestic violence lethality assessment and notified PGPD’s Domestic Violence Unit. After DVU detectives interviewed the victim they applied for and received a felony domestic assault warrant for the suspect. Efforts are underway to locate and arrest him.

3200 block of Queenstown Drive: Robbery – 9:25am. The victim, a 13 year old juvenile, told officers that as he was walking to his school bus stop he passed three Hispanic males, one of which he knew by name only. As he passed the three he was tackled from behind and held down while the three stole his cell phone. The victim sustained minor scrapes and bruises during the robbery and said that he was not otherwise assaulted and no weapons were displayed by his assailants. All three suspects attend Hyattsville Middle School with the victim. PGPD robbery detectives were called to conduct a follow-up investigation.

3400 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Trespassing – 1:45pm. Officers responded for the report of two intoxicated males sleeping in front of a store front. One of the individuals was transported to the hospital due to his level of intoxication. The second individual was awakened and began creating a disturbance. The officers learned that he had been previously issued a loitering warning notice barring him from the property. As the officers were writing a trespassing criminal citation he became increasingly disorderly and eventually had to be arrested and charged with disorderly conduct and trespassing. 

3800 block of 34th Street: Criminal citation – 2pm. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for possessing an open container of an alcoholic beverage in a public place.

3100 block of Varnum Street: Theft – 7:15pm. The homeowner told officers that sometime on May 31st someone stole several chairs off her front porch. No witnesses/evidence could be identified.

3400 block of Newton Street: Theft – 7:40pm. The resident told officers that sometime prior to his call to police someone stole three bicycles from his back yard. No witnesses/evidence could be identified.

June 1st:

33rd Street and Bunker Hill Road: Arson – 12:20am. Officers responded for the report of several trash cans on fire. When they arrived they observed three City trash cans on fire at the corners of the intersection and a shopkeeper of a nearby business frantically trying to put out the fires. Officers spoke to the store owner who said that three black males around 18-20 years of age had just lit the cans on fire and fled on foot. Officers canvassed the area for the suspects and as they searched they discovered another can on fire at 34th Street and Shepherd Streets. Officers were able to locate the three suspects in the 3200 block of Shepherd Street and tried to stop them as they fled on foot. They were able to detain one of the suspects and he was positively identified by the witness as one of the subjects involved. He was arrested, charged accordingly and transported to DOC in Upper Marlboro. An investigation to identify the remaining suspects is continuing.

4200 block of Russell Avenue: Returned missing person – 11:20pm. The 15 year old juvenile reported as a runaway returned home. Officers interviewed the boy who said that his mother put him out and out of anger and frustration he decided to stay in the basement of the building. Officers found him in good health with no injuries.

The following information  comes courtesy  of the  New Jersey Cybersecurity & Communications Integration Cell Public cell phone charging stations supplied with power cables or USB ports located in stores, airports, libraries, and schools may seem like a convenient way to charge your mobile devices on-the-go, but can you be sure that your device and data will be safe if you connect? These kiosks can contain concealed computers that attempt to extract data such as contact information, photos, and videos from connected devices, unbeknownst to the users. Additionally, malicious or compromised charging stations can expose devices to the risk of a malware infection. Even if the charging station isn’t malicious, the manufacturer or owner of the kiosk may require users to input their email addresses or phone numbers in order to charge their devices, potentially exposing them to unwanted marketing campaigns, spam emails, and scam calls. Police Report: May 8-11

Friday May 8th : 3400 block of 11 Newton Street : At about 2 pm officers responded for the report of a woman who had been assaulted by her boyfriend. The boyfriend allegedly punched the woman in the mouth and choked her. She told the officers that she did not want any police assistance and refused to tell the officers what had occurred. She was referred to the District Court Commissioner if she decided to press charges at a later time. Saturday May 9th : Nothing significant to report. Sunday May 10th : 4500 block of Eastern Avenue (BP station) : At about 11 am officers responded for the report of a stolen auto. The officers met with the victim/owner who told them that he left the keys to his 2002 Lincoln on the front seat when he went inside to pay for gas. When he came out of the store he saw his Lincoln being driven up Eastern Avenue towards Rhode Island Avenue by a black male (no further description). A check of the area for the stolen car proved negative and a lookout for it was gi
