Police Report: July 6-12

The Mount Rainier Police Department’s weekly report is not intended to be a listing of every incident or call for service handled by the police department, but merely a general summary of incidents that may be of interest to the community. Some reports may be outside the date parameters due to extended investigations or other circumstances. Some cases are not included at all due to ongoing investigations.

July 12th:

3100 block of Queens Chapel Road: MIR – 1:30pm. Officers took a report regarding threats to a store employee. Two suspects, one of whom was asked to leave the store after cursing at the store manager, threatened to “get” the employee.

Queens Chapel Road and Chillum Road: M/V collision – 4:55pm. Officers investigated a motor vehicle collision and determined that a 2009 Chevy Tahoe was making a turn from Queens Chapel Road onto Chillum Road. As the vehicle was making the turn an adult female and a small child were attempting to cross the street in front of traffic. The turning vehicle struck the pedestrians. They were transported to the hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

3500 block of Otis Street: MIR – 5:55pm. An 18 year old woman told officers that a male subject who she knows from high School has been sending her explicit pictures. She had already contacted school officials about the incident but also wanted a police report on file.

July 11th:

3200 block of Queens Chapel Road: Warrant service – 12:30am. Officers stopped a man to issue him a criminal citation for drinking in public. A wanted check indicated that he had an open arrest warrant for failing to appear in court on a charge of driving without a license. He was issued a criminal citation for the alcohol violation, arrested on the warrant and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville.

3400 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Criminal citation – 9:55am. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for drinking in public.

4500 block of 30th Street: Theft – 10:50am. The victim told officers that on July 10th at about 7:30pm he covered three bikes in his back yard with a tarp. When he returned to the bikes this morning he discovered that all three had been stolen.  The bikes were described as a burgundy 27” English racer 12-speed; a black 27” Olympia 12-speed; and a red 24” Schwinn kids bike with full suspension.

3300 block of Chillum Road: M/V collision – 3:45pm. A 2007 Chrysler van was backing out of a parking space when it struck a pedestrian crossing behind it. The pedestrian sustained minor injuries.

4600 block of 27th Street: Burglary – 3:25pm. The resident told officers that he locked and secured his residence and was gone for about two hours. When he returned home he discovered some electronics missing. There were no signs of forced entry. The victim said that it was possible that his former girlfriend took his property because he refused to loan her money. The incident is still under investigation.

July 10th:

2500 block of Arundel Road: Theft from auto – 8am. The owner of a 2007 Ford Focus told officers that sometime between 2:15pm on the 9th and the time she called police someone broke into her vehicle through a rear passenger window and stole a backpack and cash from inside.

4300 block of Kaywood Drive: Theft from auto – 10:55am. The owner of a 2007 Toyota Camry told officers that sometime between 10pm on the 9th and the time he called police someone broke into his vehicle through a front passenger side window and stole a GPS unit from inside.

3700 block of 34th Street: Death – 2:30pm. A close friend of a 67 year old woman came into the police station to report that the woman had passed away. The woman had been under home hospice care for cancer since February. Family members were in the process of coordinating the decedent’s funeral arrangements.

July 9th:

3800 block of 34th Street: Threats – 2:30pm. Officers interviewed a woman who told them that she was being threatened by a man both by phone and by text message. The woman said that she knew the man’s name, date of birth and identifying characteristics but no his address. She was advised to seek a protection order against the man and was transported to the Commissioner’s office to apply for the order.

4000 block of 33rd Street: MIR – 3:30pm. A church pastor reported that the church office received messages from an unknown individual threatening to sue the church. The pastor was unable to reach anyone who would have direct knowledge of the incident but wanted the incident documented for future reference.

35th and Otis Streets: EPS – 4:30pm. Officers responded for the report of a man walking down the middle of the street in an unbalanced manner. Officers contacted the man and observed that his behavior was consistent with being under the influence of a CDS or alcohol. He was taken into custody and transported to Washington Adventist Hospital for medical treatment.

3100 block of Queens Chapel Road: Criminal citation – 6:45pm. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for drinking in public.

July 8th:

3200 block of Chillum Road: Warrant service – 1:40am. Officers on patrol stopped a man that matched the description of an assault suspect. Further investigation revealed that the man had an open arrest warrant through Prince George’s County for failing to appear in court on a trespassing charge. He was arrested and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville.

3000 block of Arundel Road: Warrant service – 5:30am. Officers were flagged down by a citizen who alerted them to a suspicious man sleeping in the hallway of an apartment building. Officers located the man on the second floor landing, and upon further investigation discovered that he had two open arrest warrants charging him with violation of a protection order and second degree assault. He was arrested on the warrants and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville.

Cedar Lane Alley and Bunker Hill Road: Criminal citation – 8:45am. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for drinking in public.

4000 block of 34th Street: Theft – 10:20am. The victim told officers that several sheets of plywood were taken from his back yard near his shed. He said that one of his workers observed the theft take place on July 7th at about 9:30pm. The victim went on to explain that one of his workers confronted the man who took the wood and the suspect told him that he was doing roofing work, needed the plywood and that the owner authorized it. The witness attempted to contact the owner but could not get in touch with him.  The victim stated that he believes that he may know who the suspect is. The incident was documented and the investigation is ongoing.

3200 block of Chauncey Place: M/V collision – 11:30am. Officers investigated a collision between a 2012 Honda Accord and a 2011Ford Taurus. Their investigation revealed that the Honda was backing out of a parking space and struck the Ford as it was passing by. Both vehicles sustained minor damage.

4300 block of 28th Place: Lost property – 1:20pm. Officers took a report from a woman who said that she had lost her passport. She said she last saw her passport on June 28th.

3300 block of Rhode island Avenue: Warrant service – 4:50pm. Officers were conducting a business check when they observed a disorderly subject inside. Officers escorted the subject from the premises. Further investigation revealed that he had an open arrest warrant for failing to appear in court on a traffic charge. He was arrested and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville.

3400 block of Eastern Avenue: Warrant service – 7:15pm. Officers responded for the report of three individuals entering a vacant house. All three were apprehended inside and further investigation revealed that he had an open arrest warrant through Arlington, Virginia for theft. He was arrested on the warrant and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville. The remaining subjects were released pending additional charges once the homeowner can be found.

July 7th:

3300 block of Chauncey Place: Attempt Arson – 2:30am. Officers on patrol saw fire/rescue personnel responded to a call in the Queenstown Apartments. Officers were told at the time that someone had lit a piece of paper on fire in an elevator (there are no elevators in any of the apartment buildings in the complex). The nature of the fire remained a mystery until security officers said that a man poured motor oil in the stairway and lit pieces paper on fire in an attempt to set the building on fire. Fire/rescue personnel on the scene summoned the Fire Marshall to the scene to conduct an arson investigation.

3800 block of 33rd Street: Missing person – 7pm. The girlfriend of a 24 year old man reported him missing since July 6th. Further investigation revealed that at the time he was reported missing he was a guest of the DC detention system. He has since returned home.

4000 block of 34th Street: Stolen auto – 2:50pm. The owner of a 2009 Honda Odyssey told officers that she left her van unattended with the keys inside for about ten minutes while she was delivering supplies to a local business. When she came back to where she parked the vehicle she discovered that it had been stolen.

34th Street and Rhode Island Avenue: Lost property – 6:35pm. The owner told officers that he got on a bus at the bus terminal and mistakenly left his wallet behind. He said that once he was on the bus he realized that his wallet must have fallen out of his pocket when he stood up to get on the bus.

July 6th:

3200 block of Chillum Road: Criminal citation – 11pm. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for trespassing. The arrestee had been given several verbal and written notices against trespassing on the property of Queens Town Apartments.

The following information  comes courtesy  of the  New Jersey Cybersecurity & Communications Integration Cell Public cell phone charging stations supplied with power cables or USB ports located in stores, airports, libraries, and schools may seem like a convenient way to charge your mobile devices on-the-go, but can you be sure that your device and data will be safe if you connect? These kiosks can contain concealed computers that attempt to extract data such as contact information, photos, and videos from connected devices, unbeknownst to the users. Additionally, malicious or compromised charging stations can expose devices to the risk of a malware infection. Even if the charging station isn’t malicious, the manufacturer or owner of the kiosk may require users to input their email addresses or phone numbers in order to charge their devices, potentially exposing them to unwanted marketing campaigns, spam emails, and scam calls. Police Report: May 8-11

Friday May 8th : 3400 block of 11 Newton Street : At about 2 pm officers responded for the report of a woman who had been assaulted by her boyfriend. The boyfriend allegedly punched the woman in the mouth and choked her. She told the officers that she did not want any police assistance and refused to tell the officers what had occurred. She was referred to the District Court Commissioner if she decided to press charges at a later time. Saturday May 9th : Nothing significant to report. Sunday May 10th : 4500 block of Eastern Avenue (BP station) : At about 11 am officers responded for the report of a stolen auto. The officers met with the victim/owner who told them that he left the keys to his 2002 Lincoln on the front seat when he went inside to pay for gas. When he came out of the store he saw his Lincoln being driven up Eastern Avenue towards Rhode Island Avenue by a black male (no further description). A check of the area for the stolen car proved negative and a lookout for it was gi
