The Mount Rainier Police Department’s weekly report is not intended to be a listing of every incident or call for service handled by the police department, but merely a general summary of incidents that may be of interest to the community. Some reports may be outside the date parameters due to extended investigations or other circumstances. Some cases are not included at all due to ongoing investigations.
2700 block of Upshur Street: Vehicle theft – 5:40am. The owner of a 2003 Dodge Caravan told officers that he parked and locked his van about 7:30pm on the 8th. When he returned for the vehicle this morning he discovered it had been stolen. At about 2:20pm officers were notified by DC police that the vehicle had been recovered in the 5200 block of Chillum Place, NE. The vehicle was drivable and there were no arrests. The owner was notified of the recovery.
4200 block of Russell Avenue: Theft – 11:55am. The victim told officers that sometime between 8:30am this morning and 6:15pm this evening someone stole a bottle of cologne from his apartment. There were no signs of forced entry. The victim said that he suspects that someone from the exterminator company stole the cologne while working in his apartment.
4100 block of Russell Avenue: Destruction of property – 4:45pm. The resident reported that sometime between 11pm on the 8th and 1:30am this morning someone broke a window in her apartment.
4300 block of Kaywood Drive: Lost property – 9:20am. The reporting person told officers that she placed her wallet on top of her vehicle and forgot about it when she drove off. She realized her mistake after a few blocks but was unable to locate her wallet.
3100 block of Queens Chapel Road: 2nd degree assault – 9pm. Officers responded for the report of a fight in progress. When they arrived they saw that the participants were dispersing but with the help of a few witnesses they were able to locate the individuals involved in the altercation. The individuals were not very cooperative with the officers and the officers were unable to determine the reason for the fight. One of the individuals was transported to a local hospital for medical treatment of a possible concussion.
3400 block of Rhode Island Avenue: EPS – 12:45am. Officers stopped to check the welfare of a man walking in the roadway. Further investigation revealed that he was acting in an irrational and confused manner consistent with being under the influence of a CDS, possibly PCP. He was taken into custody and transported to Washington Adventist Hospital where he was released to medical personnel for emergency treatment.
3100 block of Chillum Road: DUI – 1:50am. Officers stopped a 2005 Honda Odyssey for a traffic violation. When the officers asked the drive for his license and registration he slid over into the passenger seat to retrieve them from the glove box before placing the vehicle into park. The Honda rolled back and struck the officers’ police vehicle causing minor damage to the front bumper. Further investigation revealed that the driver was under the influence of a CDS, probably PCP. He was arrested and charged with driving under the influence of a CDS and the vehicle was impounded.
3100 block of Chillum Road: Criminal citation – 2:25am. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for possession of an open alcoholic beverage in public.
3800 block of Bunker Hill Road: Criminal citation – 9am. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for possession of an open alcoholic beverage in public.
3400 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Criminal citation – 2pm. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for drinking in public.
3200 block of Queens Chapel Road: Theft – 4:50pm. A woman came into the police station to report the theft of her cell phone. She said that she set the phone on top of one of the gas pumps at the Sunoco gas station on Queens Chapel Road and when she went to retrieve it, it had been taken. She said that he called her phone and a woman answered but refused to return the phone. The phone was tracked to a general area in Riverdale Park; however RPPD officers assisting in the investigation were not able to determine the exact location.
3800 block of 35th Street: Criminal citation – 1:30pm. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for drinking in public.
4000 block of 34th Street: Criminal citation (x2) – 1:30pm. Officers issued each of two men a criminal citation for drinking in public.
3800 block of Bunker Hill Road: Warrant service (juvenile) – 6:35pm. Officers stopped to speak with a 16 year old juvenile who was trespassing in an area from which he had been previously banned. Further investigation revealed that the Prince George’s Sheriff’s Office was holding an open arrest warrant charging the juvenile with robbery with a dangerous weapon, 1st degree burglary and 2nd degree assault. The juvenile was arrested and, after parental notification, delivered to the custody of the Cheltenham Youth Facility. The robbery charge was filed by PGPD detectives after identifying the juvenile as involved in the July 30th robbery of the Alife Food Mart on Bunker Hill Road.
4500 block of Eastern Avenue: Theft from auto – 9:25am. The victim told officers that she stopped at the gas station and went inside to make a purchase. Once she made her purchase she left the station and once she got to her final destination she discovered that she was missing her purse. She returned to the gas station and reported the theft to police. Officers and store employees reviewed the security camera footage and saw a man get out of a gray Toyota, enter the victim’s vehicle through the front passenger window and steal her purse. The vehicle fled the scene into DC along Eastern Avenue. The surveillance video was not clear enough to identify the suspect or the license plates of the suspect’s vehicle.
3600 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Criminal citation – 8:35pm. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for drinking in public.
2500 block of Queens Chapel Road: Traffic – 2:40am. Officers stopped a 1996 Nissan Maxima for an equipment violation. Further investigation revealed that the driver’s license was suspended. He was issued the appropriate citations and the vehicle was impounded.
One Municipal Place: Traffic – 10:15am. Officers stopped a 1994 Chevy Tahoe for a traffic violation. Further investigation revealed that the driver did not have a license, had switched tags on the vehicle and the vehicle was unregistered. The driver was charged accordingly and the vehicle impounded.
4500 block of 32nd Street: Vehicle impound – 8:45pm. Officers on patrol came upon a 2000 Lincoln Navigator parked on the street with no tags attached. The vehicle was not registered and was impounded for safekeeping.
3000 block of Chillum Road: Traffic – 11:10pm. Officers stopped a 1996 Nissan Frontier for a traffic violation. Further investigation revealed that the driver did not have a license. The vehicle was impounded and the driver charged accordingly.
4100 block of 30th Street: Theft – 9:35am. The owner of a specialized mountain bike told officers that he left his bike on his front porch at about 7:30pm on July 13th. When he returned for the bike the following day he discovered that it had been stolen.
3300 block of Buchanan Street: Burglary – 1:45pm. The resident told officers that she left her apartment at about 10am this morning. When she returned home she discovered the front door ajar and several items of her personal property and cash missing from inside. The apartment had not been ransacked or otherwise disturbed and there were no signs of forced entry.
4000 block of 33rd Street: Hit and run collision – 4:55pm. The owner of a 2003 Toyota Tacoma truck told officers that on July 3rd at about 9pm she heard a loud bang and looked outside. She saw a black male picking up and getting on a scooter in front of the vehicle. The owner did not realize that there was any damage to the vehicle until she returned to it the following day.
3400 block of Bunker Hill Road: Theft from auto – 5pm. The owner of a 1995 Honda Accord told officers that he left his wallet inside his vehicle at about 6pm on July 3rd. When he returned to the vehicle this evening he discovered his wallet missing.
3100 block of Queens Chapel Road: Residential fire – 9:45pm. Officers responded with fire/rescore personnel to an active fire in an apartment building. Firefighters forced entry into several apartments in order to locate and extinguish the fire. The fire was investigated and determined to be accidental. Apartment complex management was contacted and responded to the scene. There were no injuries reported.
2900 block of Bunker Hill Road: Domestic assault – 11:20am. Officers met with the female victim who said that she had a domestic argument with a male acquaintance. The argument turned physical and the man physically pinned her to a couch, held a knife to her throat and threatened to kill her. She was able to escape to a neighbor’s apartment and called police. The suspect had fled the scene prior to the officers’ arrival. Officers applied for a warrant for the suspect’s arrest charging him with 1st degree assault.
3400 block of Rhode Island Avenue: EPS – 8:05pm. Officers stopped to check the welfare of a man who appeared to be talking to an electrical box. As the officers questioned him they saw that he was acting irrationally and was in a confused state of mind and possibly under the influence of a CDS. Fire/rescue personnel responded and transported him to Prince George’s Hospital Center where he was released to medical personnel for treatment.
