Police Report: July 27 - August 2

The Mount Rainier Police Department’s weekly report is not intended to be a listing of every incident or call for service handled by the police department, but merely a general summary of incidents that may be of interest to the community. Some reports may be outside the date parameters due to extended investigations or other circumstances. Some cases are not included at all due to ongoing investigations.

August 2nd:

34th Street and Rhode Island Avenue: M/V collision – 2:55pm. Officers on patrol came upon a 2001 Chevy Tahoe that had two flat rear tires as the result of a collision. When the officers asked the driver how the collision occurred he said that a pole jumped out in front of him. The officers noted that the driver was under the influence of alcohol and further investigation revealed that he did not have a license and the vehicle was not his. He was arrested and transported to the University of Maryland PD for a blood alcohol test. The test revealed that his BAC was .14. He was charged with DUI and eight other traffic violations and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville. The vehicle was impounded for safekeeping.

3800 block of 31st Street: Vehicle impound – 4:50am. Officers patrolling with a LPR were alerted to a stolen license plate. The plate was attached to a parked 1998 Lincoln Town car. Further investigation revealed that both tags were stolen from an address in DC back on July 10th. The tags were seized for return to MVA and the vehicle was impounded.

One Municipal Place: Criminal citation – 12:25pm. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for drinking in public.

3300 block of Taylor Street: EPS – 1:15pm. Officers responded for the report of a man walking in the middle of the street. Further investigation revealed that he was under the influence of a CDS, probably PCP. He was transported to Washington Adventist Hospital and released to medical personnel for treatment.

3800 block of 34th Street: Criminal citation – 3:30pm. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for drinking in public.

3200 block of Rhode Island Avenue (police station rear parking lot): Criminal citation – 5pm. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for urinating in public.

3400 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Criminal citation (x2) – 5pm. Officers issued each of two men a criminal citation for drinking in public.

3400 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Criminal citation – 5:40pm. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for drinking in public.

3800 block of 35th Street: Criminal citation (x2) – 6:15pm. Officers issued each of two men a criminal citation for disorderly conduct.

34th Street and Bunker Hill Road: Traffic – 10:10pm. Officers stopped a 1999 Pontiac Bonneville because a mobile LPR alerted the officer that the tags were stolen. Further investigation revealed that the vehicle was being driven by the owner of the tags who reported them stolen back on July 12th. He told the officers that he found the tags and continued to use them. Trouble was he was using them on an unregistered vehicle. The tags were seized for return to MVA and the vehicle was impounded. The driver was issued three State traffic citations.

August 1st:

3300 block of Chillum Road: 2nd degree domestic assault – 2:20am. Officers on patrols heard a female yelling. When they found her they saw that she had blood on her face, hands and legs. They also stopped a man who had been following the woman and learned that he had assaulted her during a domestic dispute. He was arrested, charged with 2nd degree assault and delivered to the custody of DOC in Upper Marlboro.

3400 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Criminal citation – 7:20am. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for disorderly conduct.

3300 block of Bunker Hill Road: Theft from auto – 9:20am. The owner of a 2004 Subaru told officers that she had just dropped off a passenger at Joe’s and was inside for about five minutes. When she returned to he vehicle she discovered that the driver’s side window had been smashed out and several items had been stolen from inside.

3300 block of Chauncey Place: Identity theft – 11am. The victim told officers that she was contacted by the Social Security Administration regarding her benefits. Her benefits had been cancelled because someone else used her social security number to report income. The victim needed a local police report so that SSA could begin to correct the situation.

3400 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Criminal citation – 12pm. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for possession of an open container of an alcoholic beverage.

3400 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Criminal citation – 2pm. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for possession of an open container of an alcoholic beverage.

3400 block of Eastern Avenue: Criminal citation – 2pm. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for trespassing in a vacant house.

33rd Street and Bunker Hill Road: Criminal citation – 6pm. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for possession of CDS paraphernalia.

3400 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Criminal citation – 11pm. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for possession of an open container of an alcoholic beverage.

3800 block of 34th Street: Commercial burglary – 11pm. Officers responded for the report of a commercial burglary that had just occurred. When they arrived witnesses told them that they saw a man known to frequent the 3400 block of Rhode Island Avenue break a window to the business.  The suspect went inside, came out with a bicycle and was last seen going toward Rhode Island Avenue.  The business owner responded and was able to get a partial image of the suspect from the security system. An investigation is underway to identify the suspect and charge him with the burglary.

July 31st:

4000 block of 35th Street: Vehicle impound – 7am. Officers on patrol came upon a 1997 Honda Accord that had been abandoned with the engine running. The driver’s side window had been smashed out and the ignition had been removed. The vehicle had not yet been reported stolen and was impounded for safekeeping.

30th and Allison Streets: Vehicle impound – 8:05am. Officers impounded a 2001 Dodge Caravan that had been previously marked for 48-hour towing.

4700 block of 31st Place: Vehicle impound – 10:40am. Officers impounded a 1989 Ford Festiva that had been previously marked for 48-hour towing.

3700 block of Shepherd Street: Theft – 12:05pm. A man came into the police station to report that someone had stolen a bicycle from his back yard sometime after 11am on the 30th.

July 30th:

29th and Upshur Streets: CDS arrest – 12:20am. Officers stopped a vehicle because the driver was not wearing a seatbelt. Further investigation revealed that the driver’s license was suspended and the vehicle’s registration was not on file. The driver was also found in possession of 13.6 grams of marijuana after admitting to the officers that he smoked the drug in the vehicle earlier. He was issued several citations for the traffic violations and arrested for possession of marijuana. He was delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville and his vehicle was impounded.

3800 block of Bunker Hill Road (Alife Food Mart): Robbery – 2:40am. The store clerk told officers that two black males in their 20s came into the store, one of whom was armed with a black long gun. The suspects threatened to shoot the clerk unless he surrendered the store’s money. The clerk gave them access to the cash register where they stole a quantity of cash and change and several packs of cigarettes. The two then fled the store on foot in the direction of the 3400 block of Bunker Hill Road. Prince George’s County Police K-9 responded to the scene and tracked the suspects to the 3800 block of 35th Street where the track was lost. PGPD robbery detectives responded to take over the follow-up investigation and a PGPD forensics team responded to collect evidence.

34th and Otis Streets: EPS (x3) – 10:35am. Officers responded for the report of a woman down on the roadway bleeding from the mouth. When the officers arrived they found the woman who was obviously under the influence of a CDS. The officers also discovered two men with her that were also under the influence of CDS. Fire/rescue personnel were summoned to transport two of the three to Washington Adventist Hospital for emergency medical treatment. The third individual was transported to WAH by an MRPD officer. Further investigation revealed that the woman had smoked PCP earlier in the day and the two men had used either PCP or synthetic marijuana.

3400 block of Newton Street: Theft from auto – 6:55pm. The reporting person told officers that sometime between 4:10pm and 6:30pm today someone stole a laptop from inside her car. She said that she believed she locked her can prior to leaving it but was unsure. There were no signs of forced entry into the vehicle.

3100 block of Chillum Road: EPS – 11:25pm. Officers responded for the report of a disorderly male attempting to steal merchandise. Officers found the male and knew from previous contacts that he was a juvenile. When they questioned him he began to make statements about wanting to hurt himself. Officers determined that it was in the juvenile’s best interest to have him evaluated by medical personnel. He was transported to Washington Adventist Hospital where he was released to medical personnel for an emergency psychiatric examination. 

July 29th:

29th Street and Bunker Hill Road: Recovered stolen auto – 10am. Officers on patrol came across a 2000 Dodge Intrepid that had been previously reported stolen from an address outside the City. The vehicle had ignition damage however, both tags were attached and the vehicle appeared to be in good driving condition. The vehicle was impounded for safekeeping.

3500 block of Newton Place: Stolen vehicle – 7:30am. The owner of a 1996 Honda Accord told officers that sometime between midnight this morning and the time he called police someone stole his vehicle.

4000 block of 33rd Street: Burglary – 10:30am. The reporting person told officers that she came to the Mount Rainier Christian Church for a meeting and discovered that a door was open slightly. She entered the building and saw that several offices had been ransacked but could not advise if anything had been stolen.

3200 block of 32nd Street: Burglary – 4pm. Officers met with a representative from Fairfax Realty who came to the residence to board up the windows after the previous tenants had been evicted by the Prince George’s Sheriff’s Office earlier in the day. The representative said that someone had entered the house after the Sheriff’s Office nailed the doors shut after the eviction. She was unable to determine if anything had been stolen due to the massive clutter inside the house.

4000 block of 33rd Street: Criminal citation – 8:35pm. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for possession of an open container of an alcoholic beverage.

July 28th:

4600 block of 29th Street: Vandalism to auto – 12:10am. The owner of a 2003 Ford truck told officers that he parked and locked his vehicle and started walking to his apartment building. As he approached the front door of the building he heard a loud noise and a hissing sound. He looked back at his truck and saw a black male near the front of it. As the victim walked back to his truck to investigate he saw the man walk away and discovered that the two passenger side tires were slashed. The victim is unaware of who the suspect is or why he would have damaged his tires.

3200 block of Queens Chapel Road: Assault – 11:15am. A man came into the police station to report that he had been assaulted by another man on July 27th at about 5:15pm. The victim said that he was accosted by a man who questioned him about flirting with the man’s girlfriend.  The victim said that he did not answer any of his questions but simply attempted to walk around him. As the victim walked away the suspect struck him in the face with a small scooter. The victim had to seek medical attention and that’s why he delayed reporting the incident to police.

July 27th:

2500 block of Arundel Road: Hit and run collision – 1:49pm. The owner of a 2014 Honda CRV reported that sometime between 11pm on the 26th and the time she called police another vehicle struck her CRV causing minor damage to the front end.

3100 block of Chillum Road: Vandalism to auto – 5:50pm. The owner of a 1992 Honda Civic told officers that sometime between 1am this morning and the time he called police someone smashed out the driver’s side window.

These kiosks can contain concealed computers that attempt to extract data such as contact information, photos, and videos from connected devices, unbeknownst to the users. With the outbreak of the H1N1 flu virus now affecting residents across the United States, and the possibility that some Maryland residents may have been infected with the disease, the Mayor & Council along with the MRPD deemed it wise to let Mount Rainier residents know of precautions that individuals should take in order to minimize the possibility of being infected by this virus.
