The Mount Rainier Police Department’s weekly report is not intended to be a listing of every incident or call for service handled by the police department, but merely a general summary of incidents that may be of interest to the community. Some reports may be outside the date parameters due to extended investigations or other circumstances. Some cases are not included at all due to ongoing investigations.
3300 block of Chillum Road: Criminal citation – 3:55am. Officers stopped a man on a DiKwon scooter that ran a stop sign. Further investigation revealed that he was in possession of a small quantity of marijuana. He was issued a criminal citation for the violation and a ticket for the stop sign and sent on his way.
4500 block of 34th Street: Burglary – 8:35pm. The resident told officers that he and his wife went out for about and hour and a half. When they returned they discovered the front door open and all the rooms in the upper portion of the house had been ransacked. Several items of jewelry and a cell phone had been stolen. The house was processed for evidence with negative results. Neighbors who had been outside on their porch told officers that they had not seen or heard anyone enter or leave the house other than the residents.
4600 block of 27th Street: Criminal citation/EPS – 10pm. Officers responded for the report of two individuals trespassing and under the influence of CDS. Both individuals were stopped and identified as having been barred from the property. One of the individuals was issues a criminal citation for trespassing and released. The second individual was under the influence of PCP and was transported to Washington Adventist Hospital for medical treatment.
3100 block of Queens Chapel Road: Criminal citation (x2) – 10:35pm. Officers issued each of two men a criminal citation for possession of open containers of alcohol in a motor vehicle.
2900 block of Bunker Hill Road: Traffic – 1:10am. Officers stopped a 1999 BMW 323 for speeding. Further investigation revealed that the driver’s license was suspended and the vehicle’s registration expired in April of this year. The driver was issued several traffic citations and released. The vehicle was impounded for safekeeping.
2500 block of Arundel Road: Burglary – 6pm. The resident told officers that she came home to discover that someone had broken into her apartment and stole two TVs, two computers and other items her personal property. The officers determined that those responsible pried open the deadbolt lock to gain entry. One of the items stolen was a 55” television but no one saw it being carried from the apartment!
4600 block of 21st Street: Recovered property – 11:35am. Officers responded to take possession of some ammunition a woman found in her mother’s house while cleaning. The ammunition was stored in the MRPD armory and marked for destruction.
4100 block of 29th Street: Burglary – 9:30pm. The residents told officers that while they were away from their residence for about an hour someone broke in and stole numerous items of their personal property including two computers and a bass guitar. The residents said that all windows and doors were locked when they left and officers found no signs of forced entry. Officers canvassed the area and located one witness who said that she did not see anything or anyone out of the ordinary during the time the burglary occurred.
4100 block of 30th Street: Fraud – 12:35pm. The victim told officers that there had been several large charges on a bank card he lost about a month ago. The card was cancelled and his bank is looking into the fraud. A copy of the report was forwarded to the PGPD financial crimes section.
4300 block of Kaywood Drive: Domestic – 2:40am. Officers investigating a domestic dispute interviewed the man and the woman involved. Both parties appeared to be under the influence of CDS, and the female half said they had both been smoking marijuana and got into an argument. Both parties refused medical treatment and neither of them had any visible signs of injury. They were advised of their options with the District Court Commissioner.
4300 block of 28th Place: Vehicle impound – 8:30am. Officers impounded a 2003 Chevy Impala for displaying a false registration sticker.
4500 block of Eastern Avenue (BP station): Vandalism – 9:40am. The reporting person told officers that he discovered where someone vandalized one of the businesses windows with what the officers believe was a BB gun.
3100 block of Queens Chapel Road: Warrant service – 9:40pm. Officers investigating a peron trespassing discovered that he had an open warrant through the PG County Sheriff’s Office. He was arrested on the warrant and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville.
3500 block of Otis Street: Vandalism – 9:15am. The reporting person showed officers where someone had written on the walls of the laundry room. The damage was photographed and no suspects were identified.
4500 block of 34th Street: Indecent conduct – 2pm. A witness told officers that he witnessed a male subject masturbating in the back seat of a black Infinity. Officers canvassed the area for the vehicle and the subject involved with negative results.
3400 block of Otis Street: 2nd degree assault – 4:45pm. Two female juveniles told officers that they got off the school bus and were immediately jumped and beaten by two older female students. The fight was supposedly the result of an Instagram post. One of the juveniles sustained a mouth injury that required multiple stitches to repair. Further investigation resulted in the identification of both older students and charges of 1st degree assault and 2nd degree assault against both.
3500 block of Otis Street: Warrant service – 12:35pm. Officers on patrol stopped a man who was wanted for 1st degree assault on a woman that occurred on September 22nd. He was arrested without incident. He was transported to PGPD CID to be interviewed by DC police detectives in a case in their jurisdiction. After the interview he was taken to DOC in Upper Marlboro and released to their custody.
4500 block of 31st Street: EPS – 7:15pm. Officers responded for the report of a man lying down talking to himself and possibly under the influence of a CDS. When the officers arrived they recognized the man from previous encounters and knew that he was off his medication and needed medical treatment. He was transported to Washington Adventist Hospital and released to medical personnel for treatment and evaluation.
4000 block of 34th Street: Tagging – 10:10pm. Officers patrolling the area discovered three instances of tagging (vandalism). Officers photographed the images and forwarded them to PGPD’s gang unit for possible identification.
3200 block of Otis Street: 1st degree assault/attempt armed robbery – 1:30am. The victim told officers that she had borrowed a cell phone from a man who accosted her in a laundry room, allegedly to get the phone back. The man proceeded to punch and choke the victim and slammed her head on the ground. The suspect then tried to steal her satchel bag by cutting the bag’s strap with a knife. While the victim held on to the bag the suspect cut her left wrist and finger with the knife. The suspect then left on foot and threatened to do more harm to the victim if he saw her in the area again. Officers obtained an arrest warrant for the suspect charging him with 1st degree assault and other crimes.
2400 block of Arundel Road: Theft from auto – 4:20am. The owner of a 2013 Honda Accord told officers that she came out to her car and discovered that someone had stolen all four wheels and tires off the vehicle.
3700 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Possession of CDS/DUI – 5am. Officers stopped a 2012 VW Jetta for a traffic violation. Further investigation revealed that the driver was under the influence of alcohol and he and a passenger were collectively in possession of a large quantity of marijuana having a street value in excess of $2,600. Both were arrested and charged with possession with intent to distribute a CDS. The driver was charged with DUI and his vehicle was impounded.
3100 block of Buchanan Street: Theft from auto – 10:25am. The owner of a 2002 Honda Civic told officers that sometime between midnight and the time he called police someone broke into his vehicle through the driver’s side window and stole the in-dash stereo and speakers from inside.

4100 block of 34th Street: Warrant service – 1pm. Officers patrolling with an automatic license plate reader (ALPR) received a hit on a vehicle with a suspended registration. The officer noted that the tags identified in the hit were supposed to be on a Honda but were actually on a Land Rover. When the officers stopped the vehicle they confirmed the ALPR information and also learned that the Land Rover was unregistered. They also learned that the driver had an open arrest warrant through Prince George’s County for misuse of a telephone. He was arrested on the warrant and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville. The vehicle was impounded.
4600 block of 29th Street: Vandalism to auto – 5:40pm. The owner of a 2006 Toyota Corolla told officers that sometime between 8pm on the 20th and the time he called police someone slashed and flattened all four tires on his vehicle. The victim suspects that neighbors did the damage because he complained about loud music coming from their apartment the night before
3600 block of Rhode island Avenue: Attempt vehicle theft – 8pm. The owner of a 2006 Dodge Caravan told officers that sometime between 2pm and 8pm today someone broke into his vehicle and tried to remove the vehicle’s ignition module. The damage was consistent with an attempted theft. No evidence/witnesses were identified.
4500 block of 34th Street: M/V collision – 9:55pm. Officers investigated a collision and found that a 1996 Toyota 4-Runner and a 2005 Toyota Sienna were traveling east on 34th Street when the driver of the 4-Runner lost control of his brakes and crashed into the back of the Sienna. Both vehicles were disabled and had to be towed from the scene. There were no injuries.
3200 block of Varnum Street: Disorderly conduct – 11pm. Officers responded for a 911 hang-up and discovered two sisters arguing. One of the sisters was intoxicated, screaming profanity and trying to start a fight with family members. She was arrested, charged with disorderly conduct and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville.
