Police Report: August 10-16

The Mount Rainier Police Department’s weekly report is not intended to be a listing of every incident or call for service handled by the police department, but merely a general summary of incidents that may be of interest to the community. Some reports may be outside the date parameters due to extended investigations or other circumstances. Some cases are not included at all due to ongoing investigations.

 

August 16th:

3700 block of 35th Street: Criminal citation – 1:15am. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for possession of a CDS (marijuana).

Buchanan Street and Chillum Road: Criminal citation – 1:45am. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for possession of an open container of an alcoholic beverage. Due to the fact that he was in physical control of a vehicle he was also issued several traffic citations and his vehicle was impounded.

38th Street and Rhode Island Avenue: Warrant service (x2) – 4:05am. Officers stopped a vehicle for a traffic violation. Further investigation revealed that the driver had an open arrest warrant through Anne Arundel County for failing to appear in court on a charge of driving while suspended. The passenger came back with a warrant through Prince George’s County Maryland for failing to appear in court on a charge of driving without a license. Both individuals were arrested and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville.

3800 block of 33rd Street: Stolen vehicle – 11:05am. The owner of a 2000 Chrysler Sebring told officers that at about 10:50am she heard her car start up. When she looked outside she saw the vehicle being driven away by an unknown individual. Officers canvassed the area for the vehicle with negative results. A lookout was broadcast to surrounding agencies.

4500 block of Eastern Avenue: Theft from auto – 11:05am. The victim told officers that while she was pumping gas at the BP station someone stole her tote bag that was inside her vehicle. She did not realize the purse was missing until she arrived at her destination. She returned to the station and notified police. Officers reviewed the business’s security footage and saw that a black vehicle pulled alongside the victim’s vehicle and an unknown male reached into the car and removed the bag.  The vehicle appeared to be a small black 4-door vehicle, possibly an Acura with tinted windows. 

3800 block of 35th Street: Criminal citation – 9:30pm. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for drinking in public.

4200 block of 34th Street: M/V collision – 11:15pm. Officers responded for the report of a collision. When they arrived they saw that two vehicles had been struck by a vehicle driven by an intoxicated individual. The driver was arrested and charged accordingly. The owners of the struck vehicles were given the appropriate report information for insurance purposes. The arrestee’s vehicle was impounded.

August 15th:

3400 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Criminal citation – 7:45pm. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for possession of narcotics paraphernalia.

3300 block of Chauncey Place: Emergency petition – 10:30pm. Officers responded for the report of a man bleeding and acting in a disorderly manner. Once on the scene the officers found the man and observed he was under the influence of a CDS and alcohol. When the officers tried to take him into custody he became physically combative and had to be subdued with a Taser. He was transported to Washington Adventist Hospital and released to medical personnel for treatment.

3200 block of Queenstown Drive: Criminal citation – 10:45pm. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for possession of an open container of an alcoholic beverage.

4300 block of Russell Avenue: Emergency petition – 11:30pm. Officers arrested a woman for trespassing and disorderly conduct. While enroute to DOC she made statements that she was going to kill herself. Officers immediately transported her to Washington Adventist Hospital where she was released to medical personnel for an emergency psychiatric examination.

4300 block of Russell Avenue: Criminal citation – 11:30pm. Officers issued a woman a criminal citation for disorderly conduct.

August 14th:

3800 block of 37th Street: Emergency petition – 7:40pm. Officers responded for the report of an individual rolling on the ground. The officers located the man and asked him questions to determine his mental awareness. He was unable to tell the officers where he lived, what day it was, or where he was. He did say that people were trying to kill him, and he wanted to kill someone and then himself. He was taken into custody and transported to Washington Adventist Hospital for an emergency psychiatric examination.

3100 block of Queens Chapel Road: Warrant service – 8:40pm. Officers responded to assist Queenstown security in locating an individual that had an open arrest warrant for trespassing. Officers located the man, verified the warrant and arrested him. He was delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville.

August 13th:

3800 block of 34th Street: Theft – 10:20am. The resident told officers that sometime between August 7th and August 11th someone came into his apartment and stole several items of his personal property. There were no signs of forced entry into the residence.

Rhode Island Avenue and 34th Street: M/V collision -11:15am. The driver of a 2001 GMC Yukon stopped the vehicle in a cross walk and then backed up into a 2001 Nissan Altima. Charges against the at fault driver are pending.

4100 block of 30th Street: Theft from auto – 5:50pm. The reporting person told officers that back on July 23rd she parked a friend’s vehicle in her driveway. When she returned to the vehicle the next day she discovered that several items had been stolen from inside. She said that she may have left the vehicle unlocked as there were no signs of forced entry.

August 12th:

4000 block of 32nd Street: Theft from auto – 9:10am. The owner of a 2014 Chevy Tahoe told officers that sometime between 11pm on the 11th and the time he called police someone broke into his vehicle through a passenger side window and stole about $5 in coin from inside.

3300 block of Chauncey Place: Criminal citation – 7:15pm. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for possession of approximately .6 grams of marijuana.

4600 block of 29th Street: Assault – 8:30pm. The victim told officers that as she was crossing the parking lot with her 2-month old child a vehicle drove through the lot at a high rate of speed and attempted to strike them. The vehicle turned around and tried to hit them a second time before leaving the area. The victim recognized the vehicle’s driver as a woman with whom she had been having an ongoing dispute. Officers have applied for a criminal arrest warrant charging the driver with felony assault.

4200 block of Eastern Avenue: Emergency petition – 10:55pm. Officers spoke with a woman’s husband who said that his wife had taken a large quantity of medication earlier in the evening. He also said that she had tried to commit suicide once before. When officers asked the woman if she wanted to harm herself she said that she did. She was taken into custody and transported to Washington Adventist Hospital for an emergency psychiatric examination.

August 11th:

3100 block of Queens Chapel Road: Criminal citation – 1:35am. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for possession of marijuana.

4000 block of 35th Street: CDS possession – 7:25pm. Officers responded for the report of the odor of CDS in the area. When the officers arrived they discovered a man in possession of a glass vile containing liquid PCP. He was arrested, charged accordingly and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville.

2300 block of Varnum Street (7-11): Shoplifting – 8:40pm. The store clerk told officers that a black male came into the store and stole a bottle of ginger ale and a container of ice cream. The suspect fled the store on foot up 22nd Street towards Queens Chapel Road.

2300 block of Varnum Street (7-11): Shoplifting – 9:40pm. The store clerk told officers that two black females came into the store and stole two bottles of soda and several packages of noodles. The suspects were seen leaving the area in a vehicle believed to be a Honda.  

3300 block of Chillum Road: Disorderly – 10:45pm. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for disorderly conduct.

August 10th:

3200 block of Bunker Hill Road: Armed robbery – 3:20am. The two victims told officers that while walking to a friend’s house from the Food Mart on 34th Street they we accosted by a man wearing a ski mask and armed with a handgun. The victims were ordered to the ground and forced to surrender several items of their personal belongings. The victims complied and the suspect ordered them to run away and not look back. The victims ran to gas station in Brentwood where they were able to get a ride back home and notify the police. PGPD robbery detectives responded to interview the victims and take over the follow-up investigation. Detectives were able to quickly identify a suspect in the case and took him into custody for questioning. The suspect provided detectives with a statement confessing to the robbery. He was charged accordingly and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville.

3400 block of Rhode Island Avenue: 2nd degree assault – 11:25am. A woman under the influence of a CDS asked to buy a cigarette from a man. The man gave her the cigarette and when she refused to pay for it an argument ensued. When the woman became aggressive and hostile the man smacked the woman in the face to defend himself. Both parties were advised of their options with the District Court Commissioner.

3100 block of Queens Chapel Road (Family Dollar): Theft – 12:35pm. The store clerk told officers that two black male teenagers entered the store and stole seven containers of Gain laundry detergent. The two fled the store on foot towards Chillum Road.

36th and Shepherd Streets: M/V collision – 1:15pm. The driver of a 1999 Toyota struck a parked 2007 Toyota. The driver remained at the scene and told officers that he did not have a driver’s license. He was issued several traffic citations and his vehicle was impounded.

3800 block of 33rd Street: Traffic – 7:10pm. Officers stopped a 2001 Ford Taurus for driving the wrong way down a one way street. Further investigation revealed that the driver did not have a license. He was charged accordingly and his vehicle impounded.

The following information  comes courtesy  of the  New Jersey Cybersecurity & Communications Integration Cell Public cell phone charging stations supplied with power cables or USB ports located in stores, airports, libraries, and schools may seem like a convenient way to charge your mobile devices on-the-go, but can you be sure that your device and data will be safe if you connect? These kiosks can contain concealed computers that attempt to extract data such as contact information, photos, and videos from connected devices, unbeknownst to the users. Additionally, malicious or compromised charging stations can expose devices to the risk of a malware infection. Even if the charging station isn’t malicious, the manufacturer or owner of the kiosk may require users to input their email addresses or phone numbers in order to charge their devices, potentially exposing them to unwanted marketing campaigns, spam emails, and scam calls. Police Report: May 8-11

Friday May 8th : 3400 block of 11 Newton Street : At about 2 pm officers responded for the report of a woman who had been assaulted by her boyfriend. The boyfriend allegedly punched the woman in the mouth and choked her. She told the officers that she did not want any police assistance and refused to tell the officers what had occurred. She was referred to the District Court Commissioner if she decided to press charges at a later time. Saturday May 9th : Nothing significant to report. Sunday May 10th : 4500 block of Eastern Avenue (BP station) : At about 11 am officers responded for the report of a stolen auto. The officers met with the victim/owner who told them that he left the keys to his 2002 Lincoln on the front seat when he went inside to pay for gas. When he came out of the store he saw his Lincoln being driven up Eastern Avenue towards Rhode Island Avenue by a black male (no further description). A check of the area for the stolen car proved negative and a lookout for it was gi
