The Mount Rainier Police Department’s weekly report is not intended to be a listing of every incident or call for service handled by the police department, but merely a general summary of incidents that may be of interest to the community. Some reports may be outside the date parameters due to extended investigations or other circumstances. Some cases are not included at all due to ongoing investigations.
3200 block of Chillum Road: Criminal citation – 7:05am. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for drinking in public.
3400 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Traffic – 11:25am. Officers stopped a 2001 Saturn for a traffic violation. Further investigation revealed that the tags affixed to the vehicle were suspended, had been switched from another vehicle, and the vehicle itself was unregistered. The driver was issued several citations and the vehicle was impounded.
3400 block of Shepherd Street: Burglary – 2:30pm. Officers responded for the report of a residential alarm. When they arrived they discovered the front door kicked open but no one inside. The homeowner came home in response to the alarm and told officer that the only thing stolen was a 55” Samsung TV.
3200 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Warrant service – 4pm. A man came into the police station to surrender on an open arrest warrant. Officers confirmed that he was wanted for theft over $1,000 through Prince George’s County. He was arrested and delivered tom the custody of DOC in Upper Marlboro.
Rhode Island Ave and 36th Street: Warrant service – 4:35pm. Officers were made aware of the existence of an open warrant for a juvenile previously involved in numerous crimes in the City. The current warrant charged the juvenile as an adult for possession of a handgun and trespassing. The juvenile was located as he tried to board a Ride-on Bus. He was arrested and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville.
3200 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Warrant service – 9:15pm. An officer patrolling with a vehicle equipped with an automated license plate reader received an alert that 2006 Honda Odyssey had its registration suspended. The vehicle was stopped and further investigation revealed that the driver did not have a driver’s license; and had an open warrant issued out of Prince Georges County for failing to appear in court on a charge of driving without a license and DUI. He was arrested, issued the appropriate traffic citations and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville. His vehicle was impounded.
3100 block of Chillum Road (7-11): Shoplifting – 12am. The store clerk told officers that a black male (NFD) came into the store and stole approximately $15 worth of food items.
2400 block of Queens Chapel Road: Recovered property – 12:05am. Officers stopped two individuals who were carrying a large Sony flat screen TV. Both individuals appeared nervous when the officers stopped them. The female involved said that the TV belonged to her and she was moving it out of her aunt’s house and taking it to a friend’s house. She refused to give either the aunt’s address or her friend’s address. The officers offered the woman a ride to her aunt’s house so that they could verify the woman’s story but she refused. She told the officers that that could take the TV because it was not that big of a deal. The TV was placed into property at the Mount Rainer Police Departments secure property storage room.
3200 block of Queenstown Drive: Warrant service – 5am. Officers stopped a 2012 Ford for a traffic violation. Further investigation revealed that the driver had an open arrest warrant through PG Sheriffs. He was arrested on the warrant and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville. The vehicle was impounded.
One Municipal Place: Disorderly – 8:35am. Officers approached a man to issue him a criminal citation for drinking in public. As they approached him he fled on foot and was apprehended in the alley behind City Hall. He then began yelling obscenities at the officers and refused to calm down. He was arrested, charged with disorderly conduct and drinking in public and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville.
4200 block of 31st Street: Burglary – 10:20am. The resident told officers that she heard a loud bang downstairs and when she went to investigate she discovered her laptop missing and the area was in disarray. She also saw that the basement door had been kicked in. Just prior to receiving the call officers were notified that a complainant saw two black males in the area looking into parked vehicles. Officers canvassed the area and located the two males who were identified as juveniles with whom the officers have had numerous previous contact. The burglary victim told the officers that she had seen both juveniles before and after the break in at her residence. PGPD burglary detectives were notified and the investigation is continuing.
3300 block of Bunker Hill Road: CDS possession – 11:10am. Officers responded for the report of an individual drinking and using CDS in the park area. When they arrived they identified the individual and observed him drinking in public. Further investigation revealed that he was in possession of two packages of the synthetic marijuana known as Bizzarro. He was arrested, charged with drinking in public and possession of CDS and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville.
2700 block of Upshur Street: Fraud – 2:10pm. The victim told officers that she tried to purchase a vehicle from an Internet dealer in Canada. She wired a total of $2,000 to an individual who allegedly represented the Canadian dealer. After the money was transferred she could no longer contact the representative and learned that the dealer did not exist.
3200 block of Bunker Hill Road: Criminal citation – 3:50pm. Officers issued a woman a criminal citation for possession of narcotics paraphernalia.
One Municipal Place: EPS – 8:50pm. Officers responded to assist a Metro bus driver with a disorderly subject on a bus. The officers located the individual under the seats in the rear of bus. Officers attempted to communicate with him but he refused and when the officers tried to remove him from the bus he became extremely combative and locked his arms under the seat. After a struggle and repeated commands, officers deployed a Taser to avoid further confrontation and to avoid injury to the subject or officers. He was taken into custody and found to be in possession of an open 6 gram package of Ice Dragon, a synthetic CDS. EMS personnel transported him to Washington Adventist Hospital for treatment.
3400 block of Eastern Avenue: Theft – 7:35am. The foreman in charge of renovating an abandoned house told officers that sometime overnight someone pried open the front door and stole all the electrical wiring his crew installed yesterday. Officers processed the windows and front door for prints with negative results.
3100 block of Taylor Street: Vehicle impound – 11:35am. After extensive efforts to locate the driver/owner of a 2006 Chrysler officers impounded the vehicle for blocking a private driveway.
3100 block of Queens Chapel Road: Burglary – 9:30pm. The resident told officers that she returned home to find her living room lock was cut and her bedroom door was open. She said that nothing appeared to have been stolen. No evidence/witnesses were identified.
4000 block of Cedar Lane: Criminal citation – 10pm. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for possession of an open container of an alcoholic beverage in a motor vehicle. While the officers were issuing the citation another individual was arrested for disorderly conduct when he became confrontational with the officers. That individual was charged and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville.
4400 block of 29th Street: Property damage – 11:30pm. The property owner told officers that she arrived home and noticed that the Forsythia bush at the end of her driveway had been cut. Multiple branches were cut around the bush and were lying in the grass and on the sidewalk. Over half of the bush was cut down and it is unknown if it will survive. The owner said that a neighbor had approached her recently and complained about the size of the bush stating it did not meet City Code. Officers will work with Code Enforcement to see if civil or criminal charges are warranted against the neighbor.
4300 block of Russell Avenue: Stolen vehicle (recovered) – 12:45am. Officers were informed that PGPD officers recovered a 2013 Hyundai Sonata that had been stolen from the 4300 block of Russell Avenue several hours earlier. The vehicle was located in the 3600 block of Allison Street in Landover. No arrests were made.
3300 block of Shepherd Street: Criminal citation - 4:15am. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for drinking in public.
3700 block of 36th Street: Burglary – 11:20pm. The resident told officers that when she left home earlier in the day she left a downstairs bathroom window open. When she returned home she discovered several items of her personal property had been stolen from inside the house. Officers determined that the suspect(s) entered through the open window and stole the items.
4100 block of 34th Street: Warrant service – 12:45am. Officers responded for the report of shots fired in the area of the 4100 block of Cedar Lane Alley. While canvassing the area they stopped two individuals for a field interview. During the interview the officers recognized one of the individuals as the man for whom they obtained felony arrest warrants for 1st degree assault involving the use of a handgun back on August 1st. He was arrested on the warrant and delivered to the custody of DOC in Upper Marlboro.
4200 block of Kaywood Drive: Vehicle impound – 9am. The Parking Enforcement Officer impounded a 1996 Mercedes 320 that had expired registration and had been previously marked for 48-hour towing.
3400 block of Rhode Island Avenue: MIR – 3:45pm. The victim told officers that she has been receiving calls from a man demanding that she wire him money. The man implied that she would come to harm if she refused. The victim followed his instructions and wired him $20 but canceled the transaction before it was completed. She later learned that the recipient was in El Salvador and he called back demanding $1,000. She refused to send additional funds and wanted the incident documented by police.
4100 block of 31st Street: MIR – 6:40pm. Officers served a temporary protective order obtained by a man requiring his twin brother to vacate the house. The order is valid until August 25th.
3300 block of Shepherd Street: Criminal citation (x2) – 9:15pm. Officers issued each of two men a criminal citation for drinking in public.
4300 block of Russell Avenue: Stolen vehicle – 9:20pm. The owner of a 2013 Hyundai Sonata told officers that sometime between 2:15pm this afternoon and the time he called police someone stole his vehicle. No evidence/witnesses were identified.
3600 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Criminal citation – 1:15am. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for an open alcohol violation.
4500 block of 31st Street: Burglary – 10:40am. The resident told officers that she returned home, and while doing some yard work noticed that the side door was open and was damaged. Officers obtained some property with evidentiary value and submitted it for analysis.
Chillum Road and Queens Chapel Road: M/V collision – 3:30pm. Officers investigated the collision and determined that a 2009 Toyota crossed center lane while making a left turn and struck a 2015 Honda in the process. The driver of the Toyota was charged accordingly. The driver of the Honda was transported to a local hospital for treatment of minor injuries.
3700 block of 34th Street: Robbery – 7:05pm. The victim told officers that she was walking home from the grocery store when a black BMW occupied by four black males stopped next to her. The man in the front passenger seat got out wearing a ski-type mask, pointed a handgun at the victim and robbed her of her purse. The suspect got back onto the vehicle and it fled the area towards Eastern Avenue. The victim couldn’t describe the driver or back seat passenger, but said she might be able to identify the driver if she were to see him again. PGPD robbery detectives responded to the scene to conduct a follow-up investigation. At about 11:55pm officers learned that a DC police officer, believing the purse to have been lost, returned the purse and some of its contents to her sister who lives in the 1400 block of Rhode Island Avenue, NE. The Officer did not leave a business card or his name and did not say where the purse was found.
