Police Report: October 25-31

The Mount Rainier Police Department’s weekly report is not intended to be a listing of every incident or call for service handled by the police department, but merely a general summary of incidents that may be of interest to the community. Some reports may be outside the date parameters due to extended investigations or other circumstances. Some cases are not included at all due to ongoing investigations.

October 31st:

4100 block of 34th Street: Warrant service – 1:10am. Officers stopped a man they knew from previous encounters that had two open arrest warrants. The warrants were confirmed and he was arrested and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville.

2700 block of Allison Street: M/V collision – 3:55pm. The driver of a 1992 Mazda experienced a medical emergency and collided with a parked 2003 Ford van. EMS personnel responded to the scene to evaluate the driver but he refused treatment. His car was disabled as a result of the collision and was impounded for safekeeping.

October 30th:

34th Street and Eastern Avenue: M/V collision – 2:40pm. The driver of a 2000 BMW 323i failed to stop at the traffic light and lost control of his vehicle. The vehicle left the roadway and crashed into a tree. While documenting the crash officers learned that the driver’s license was suspended. He was charged accordingly and the vehicle was impounded.

3300 block of Chillum Road: Traffic – 7:05pm. Officers stopped a 1998 Chevy truck for a traffic violation. Further investigation revealed that the driver did not have a license. He was charged accordingly and his vehicle was impounded.

October 29th:

3200 block of Queens Chapel Road: EPS – 3:05am. Officers observed a man walking in the roadway and saw him stumble several times. When the officers checked his welfare they saw that he was incoherent, unaware of his surroundings and not able to safely function on his own. He was transported to Washington Adventist Hospital and released to the emergency medical staff for treatment.

3300 block of Chillum Road: Traffic – 7:10am. Officers stopped a vehicle after a registration check showed that the vehicle’s tags were suspended. They subsequently learned that the driver’s license was also suspended. He was issued several traffic citations and the vehicle was impounded.

2200 block of Varnum Street: 1st degree assault – 9:40am. Officers responded to assist EMS personnel with an injured person. The victim told officers that he was in an altercation with a man who struck him in the head with an expandable baton. The victim sustained a visible open laceration. Officers canvassed the area and identified a possible suspect. The victim positively identified the suspect as his assailant. He suspect was arrested and a search of his person incident to arrest revealed that he was still in possession of the baton. He was charged with 1st degree assault and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville.

4000 block of 33rd Street: EPS – 4:35pm. Officers responded for the report of a fight in progress. When they arrived they approached a man who was a possible participant and he immediately fled on foot. After a brief foot pursuit the man was apprehended. Officers observed him to be under the influence of PCP and in possession of 31 grams of marijuana, a digital scale, and other narcotics paraphernalia. He was taken into custody and transported to Washington Adventist Hospital for treatment and evaluation. Officers applied for an arrest warrant charging the man with possession of a CDS with intent to distribute.

4500 block of 30th Street: Recovered stolen auto – 7:15pm. Officers were notified by DC police that their officers recovered a 1992 Acura that had been stolen from the 4500 block of 30th Street back on October 5th. The vehicle was located in the 4400 block of C Street, SE. The vehicle was not drivable, both tags, the battery and the VIN had been removed from the vehicle. The owner was notified and the vehicle was impounded for safekeeping.

3700 block of 37th Street: DUI arrest – 8:10pm. Officers stopped a 1992 Toyota after receiving reports from citizen that the driver was possibly intoxicated. The officers observed that the driver was in fact under the influence of alcohol and was holding an open container of an alcoholic beverage at the time he was stopped. He was arrested, charged accordingly and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville. His vehicle was impounded.

October 28th:

3700 block of Shepherd Street: Burglary – 8:05am. The victim told officers that the house he and his family were in the process of moving into had been burglarized overnight. The house was vacant at the time due to ongoing construction work. The victim said that he discovered that that three bicycles and a desktop computer had been stolen. Those responsible probably gained entry through a basement window. The victim said that he was unaware that the window was only a plastic sheet. No evidence or witnesses were identified.

4200 block of 28th Street: Recovered stolen auto - 10pm. Officers were notified by DC police that their officers recovered a 2002 Dodge that had been reported stolen from the 4200 block of 28th Street back on October 25th. The vehicle was not drivable and no arrests were made. The owner was notified and the vehicle was impounded for safekeeping.

October 27th:

4700 block of 31st Place: Stolen vehicle – 8:25am. The owner of a 2005 Ford truck told officers that he came out for his vehicle this morning and discovered it had been stolen. The theft occurred sometime after about 8:20pm last night.

3700 block of 34th Street: Criminal citation – 10:05am. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for drinking in public.

4700 block of 31st Place: Vehicle impound – 12:50pm. Officers impounded a 1996 Toyota Camry for displaying expired registration plates. The vehicle had been previously marked for 48-hour towing.

2500 block of Arundel Road: Citizen armed robbery – 7:25pm. The victim told officers that he was walking home from the West Hyattsville metro Station when he was approached by a man who asked if he had any CDS to sell. When the victim told him no the man produced a handgun and demanded that he walk into the back parking lot (Queens’s Manor Apartments). Once in the parking lot another suspect was waiting and both suspects stole the victim’s cell phone, jewelry and book bag. The victim was told to walk away and not look back and he complied. Both suspects fled the area in an unknown direction. 

Suspect #1 was described as a bearded light skin black male in his mid-30s; 5’11” tall; 210lbs.; wearing a black sweatshirt and blue jeans, armed with a handgun. Suspect #2 was described as a dark skin black male; 20-30 YOA; 6’00” tall; 250 lbs.; wearing a red hooded sweatshirt and blue jeans.

October 26th:

3400 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Criminal citation – 4:05pm. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for drinking in public. While issuing the man his citation they observed that he was so thoroughly intoxicated that he needed medical attention. EMS personnel responded and transported him to a local hospital for medical attention.

October 25th:

3400 block of Rhode Island Avenue: DWI arrest – 2:50am. Officers were flagged down by several citizens and advised of a single vehicle collision in the traffic circle. Officers found a 2012 Nissan up on the curb and the driver passed out behind the wheel. The driver had bloodshot eyes, slurred speech, and was very incoherent. She told officers that she had been drinking and she subsequently failed standard field sobriety tests. She was arrested and while enroute to take a breath test she complained of back pain. EMS responded and transported her to Washington Adventist Hospital for a medical evaluation. She was issued several traffic citations and the vehicle was impounded.

4100 block of Russell Avenue: Domestic assault – 4:10am. Officers responded for the report of a man injured in a domestic altercation. They met the man outside his apartment and observed that he had bruising and lacerations to his face and bite marks and welts across his neck, side and back area. He said that his wife did this to him after a disagreement. EMS personnel responded and treated the victim’s injuries. Officers located the wife in an upstairs in apartment and arrested her. She was charged with domestic assault and delivered to the custody of DOC in Upper Marlboro.

4300 block of 34th Street: Domestic assault – 8am. Officers responded for the report of a domestic argument in progress. When they arrived they were met by the victim who was visibly upset and crying. Officers observed that his shirt was torn and he had visible marks on his face. He said that his girlfriend assaulted him after a long verbal argument where she accused him of cheating on her. Officers arrested her, charged her with domestic assault and delivered her to the custody of DOC in Upper Marlboro.

4200 block of 28th Street: Stolen vehicle – 11:40am. The owner of a 2002 Dodge told officers that he loaned his vehicle to his brother who returned it at about 1am this morning. When he went out to use his vehicle at about 11:45am he discovered it had been stolen.

4000 block of 33rd Street: Property damage – 9:10am. The owner of a 2007 Toyota told officers that she came out to her vehicle this morning and discovered both outside rear view mirrors had been broken. Nothing was missing from the vehicle and no evidence/witnesses were identified.

These kiosks can contain concealed computers that attempt to extract data such as contact information, photos, and videos from connected devices, unbeknownst to the users. Additionally, malicious or compromised charging stations can expose devices to the risk of a malware infection. With the outbreak of the H1N1 flu virus now affecting residents across the United States, and the possibility that some Maryland residents may have been infected with the disease, the Mayor & Council along with the MRPD deemed it wise to let Mount Rainier residents know of precautions that individuals should take in order to minimize the possibility of being infected by this virus.
