Police Report: February 21-27

The Mount Rainier Police Department’s weekly report is not intended to be a listing of every incident or call for service handled by the police department, but merely a general summary of incidents that may be of interest to the community. Some reports may be outside the date parameters due to extended investigations or other circumstances. Some cases are not included at all due to ongoing investigations.
February 27th:
3200 block of Queenstown Drive: Stolen vehicle – 2:30am. The owner of a 2015 Honda Accord told officers that sometime between 10pm on the 26th and the time he called police someone stole his vehicle from where he had parked it.
3000 block of Arundel Road: Stolen vehicle – 10:15am. The owner of a 1994 Jeep told officers that sometime between 5pm on the 26th and the time he called police someone stole his vehicle from the corner of 31st Street and Arundel Road.
3300 block of Buchanan Street: Vandalism to auto – 11:45am. The owner of a 2007 Toyota Camry told officers that he came out to his vehicle and discovered that a driver’s side window had been smashed out.
3400 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Criminal citation – 1:30pm. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for urinating in public.
3200 block of Perry Street: Suspicious situation – 10:20pm. Officers responded for the report of a loud explosion. Their initial investigation led them to believe that the explosion was caused by a commercial firework. Fire investigators responded to the scene and were able to recover a piece of an explosive device for analysis. There were no injuries to persons or damage to property from the explosion.
February 26th:
Nothing significant to report.
February 25th:
3249 Rhode Island Avenue: Warrant service – 11am. A woman came into the police station to recover property taken from her during a previous incident. Prior to her arriving the officers learned that she had an open arrest warrant through Prince George’s County for various traffic offenses. Her property was returned to her, she was arrested on the warrant and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville.
February 24th:
One Municipal Place: Criminal citation – 10:25am. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for urinating in public.
3400 block of Newton Street: Found property – 2:05pm. Officers were advised by a citizen that there were two ladies purses laying on the ground. Officer found the purses and both contained their owner’s work identification. Both women responded to the police station and took possession of their property. Officers learned that one of the purses was taken in a strong armed robbery in DC and the other was stolen from a vehicle, also in DC. DC police were notified of the recovery.
3300 block of Chillum Road: CDS possession – 9:25pm. Officers stopped a 2003 Audi for a traffic violation. The driver of the vehicle immediately got out and fled on foot. After a short foot chase the driver stopped and gave up. He was found in possession of a small quantity of marijuana and was arrested, charged appropriately and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville. The vehicle he was driving was impounded.
3200 block of Arundel Road: Vehicle impound – 11:10pm. Officers impounded a 2001 Chrysler Sebring for displaying a fake (photocopied) Delaware temporary tag.
February 23rd:
4500 block of Eastern Avenue (BP station): 1st degree assault – 2am. Officers responded for the report of an injured person. When they arrived they located a man sitting on the ground bleeding with a large gash on his left forearm. The man told the officers that after he got off the bus and started walking home to DC he was approached by two black males. One of the men brandished a knife and demanded his property. A fight ensued and the victim was cut on his forearm. He ran to the BP station where he called police and EMS. He was transported to Prince George’s Hospital for medical treatment of his non- life threatening injury.
3700 block 35th Street: Vehicle impound – 8:30am. Officers impounded a Nissan Altima for parking so as to block the roadway.
3700 block 35th Street: Vehicle impound – 8:45am. Officers impounded a Honda CRV for displaying expired tags that were listed to another vehicle.
3300 block of Chauncey Place: Lost property – 6:40am. A man told officers that he lost his wallet somewhere between his apartment and the basement laundry room in his building.
2900 block of Allison Street: 2nd degree assault – 6:55pm. Officers responded for the report of a domestic altercation. The female half told officers that the altercation started in a vehicle where her boyfriend punched her with a closed fist in the upper body. She ran to her apartment and called police. The male half fled the scene prior to the officers’ arrival.   The victim did not show any signs of being physically assaulted. She did screen positive on the lethality assessment and spoke with a counselor at the Family Crisis Center. She was advised of her options with a District Court Commissioner.
3300 block of Chauncey Place: Criminal citation – 10:20am. Officers responded for the report of a civil dispute between two roommates. One of the men was prohibiting the other from leaving the apartment and trying to start an altercation. Officers warned the man twice to cease the behavior and he ignored them both times. He was issued a criminal citation for failure to obey the lawful order of a police officer and sent on his way.
February 22nd:
4000 block of Cedar Lane Alley: Warrant service – 3:10pm. Officers stopped a man for a field interview and learned that he had an open arrest warrant through the US Marshal’s Service. He was arrested on the warrant and delivered to the custody of DOV in Hyattsville.
3300 block of Chillum Road: Vehicle impound – 4:05pm. Officers impounded an unregistered 2012 Honda.
February 21st:
3200 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Warrant service – 1:30am. Officers stopped a 2009 Nissan Maxima for a traffic violation. Further investigation revealed that the driver had a suspended license and an open arrest warrant through Montgomery County for failing to appear in court on multiple charges of driving without a license. He was issued the appropriate citations, arrested on the warrant and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville.
3100 block of Queenstown Drive: Armed robbery – 2:30pm. The victim, a cab driver, told officers that he picked up a fare at the West Hyattsville Metro Station and drove him to Queenstown Drive. Once at the destination the suspect placed a gun to the victim’s head and demanded his money. The victim was able to get out of the cab and flee without injury. The suspect got into the driver’s seat and stole the cab. With assistance from the cab company officers were later able to locate the cab at the intersection of Arundel Road and 32nd Street. A Hyattsville K9 unit responded to try and locate the suspect but could not find a suitable track. The cab was impounded by PGPD Detectives for processing as part of their follow-up investigation.
2700 block of Queens Chapel Road: M/V collision – 8:10am. The driver of a 2012 Ford Escape apparently had a medical emergency and struck a Metro bus that was stopped for passengers. The driver of the Ford was transported to a local hospital for treatment of non- like threatening injuries. There were no other injuries.
3200 block of Queenstown Drive: Vandalism – 11:55pm. The resident told officers that he woke up to find that one of his bedroom windows was broken. He said that he did not notice how the window was broken.
3500 block of Shepherd Street: Burglary -6:40pm. The resident told officers that when she returned home she discovered that someone had broken in and rummaged through her home. Officers determined that the suspect(s) entered through a rear window by pushing out a window air conditioner. The victim said that nothing appeared to be missing from the house.
3200 block of Chillum Road: 2nd degree assault – 7:25pm. The victim told officers that she and her husband got into an argument that turned physical. The victim sustained visible bruises to her chest. Officers arrested the husband, charged with 2nd degree domestic assault and delivered to the custody of DOC in Upper Marlboro.
2310 Varnum Street: Theft – 11:40pm. The store manager told officers that three black males entered the store, took several pieces of merchandise and left without making any attempt to pay for the merchandise. The suspects were described as 21-23 YOA wearing all black clothing.

Police Report: February 14-20

February 20th:

2400 block of Arundel Road: Property damage – 3:25pm. The owner of a 1999 Oldsmobile was driving down Arundel Road when he saw two men fighting. One of the men was swinging a shovel at the other and mistakenly hit the victim’s car with the shovel. Both men fled, but the shovel man returned a few minutes later and provided the victim with all of his information and said that he would pay for the damage to the vehicle.

3300 block of Chauncey Place: Hit and run collision – 3:35pm. The owner of a 2016 Ford told officers that she came out to her vehicle and discovered damage to the front quarter panel that wasn’t there last night.

February 19th:

3500 block of Shepherd Street: Lost property – 11:30pm. A man reported that he lost his wallet somewhere between his residence and his destination. He canceled his credit cards and is seeking a replacement ID. The man called back on February 23rd and told officers that he had merely misplaced the wallet and had found it.

Buchanan Street and Queens Chapel Road: Hit and run collision – 2:15pm. The owner of a 2010 Jeep told officers that he came out to his vehicle this morning and discovered damage to the rear quarter panel.

February 18th:

2900 block of Allison Street: Vehicle impound – 8:50am. Officers impounded a 2002 Honda for displaying tags issued to another vehicle.

3200 block of Buchanan Street: Vehicle impound – 2pm. Officers impounded a 2012 Honda for displaying tags issued to another vehicle.

3300 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Fraud – 4:20pm. A woman reported that she discovered three unauthorized, fraudulent transactions made to her bank account. She contacted her financial institution and cancelled her bank card.

February 17th:

3700 block of 37th Street: Theft from auto – 7:10am. The owner of a 1998 Ford truck reported that he came out to his vehicle this morning to find that someone smashed out the rear driver’s side passenger window and stole approximately $750 worth of tools from inside.

36th and Otis Streets: Hit and run collision – 8am. The driver of a 2016 Ford told officers that another vehicle passing him struck his vehicle and fled the scene. The victim could only describe the striking vehicle as a silver sedan.

3200 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Criminal citation – 2:40pm. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for urinating in public.

3200 block of Otis Street: Criminal citation – 7pm. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for urinating in public.

3800 block of 34th Street (Alife Market): Theft – 11:35pm. The store clerk told officers that a man came into the store and stole six (6), 18oz containers of laundry detergent. The clerk could not provide a description of the thief but said he had stolen from the store at least three times in the past.

February 16th:

2500 block of Queens Chapel Road: Recovered stolen vehicle – 12pm. Officers were notified by Anne Arundel County PD that their officers recovered a 2007 Lincoln MKX that was reported stolen from Mount Rainier on January 28th. The vehicle was found at the intersection of Wasena Avenue and Dell Street in Brooklyn, MD. The interior of the vehicle was stripped and the front tag was missing. No arrests were made.

3700 block of Shepherd Street: Lost property – 9:50am. A resident reported that she lost her wallet sometime between February 12th and 13th.

2400 block of Arundel Road: Warrant service – 4:15pm. Officers stopped a man for drinking in public. Further investigation revealed he had an open arrest warrant through Prince George’s County for failing to appear in court on a charge of driving without a license. He was arrested on the warrant and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville.

February 15th:

4700 block of 25th Street: Domestic – 2:45pm. A brother and sister got into an argument over the volume of music being played. The sister said her brother pushed her during the argument. There were no signs of injury to either party and the sister was advised of her options with a District Court Commissioner.

February 14th:

Queens Chapel Road and Buchanan Street: M/V collision – 1pm. Officers investigating the crash determined that a 2008 VW was turning left onto Buchanan Street and failed to yield the right of way to a 2010 Toyota. Both vehicles sustained damage but were drivable. A rear occupant in the Toyota complained of shoulder pain and was transported to Providence Hospital by EMS for treatment.

3300 block of Buchanan Street: Theft from auto – 4:30pm. The owner of a 1996 Toyota told officers that she stepped out from her vehicle to take a picture when a silver BMW occupied by two black males in their 20s parked next to her. One of the suspects got out of the BMW, opened the victim’s passenger door and stole her purse. The victim could not advise any other information or direction of travel.

Police Report: January 12 - February 6

The Mount Rainier Police Department’s weekly report is not intended to be a listing of every incident or call for service handled by the police department, but merely a general summary of incidents that may be of interest to the community. Some reports may be outside the date parameters due to extended investigations or other circumstances. Some cases are not included at all due to ongoing investigations.

February 6th:

Queens Chapel Road at Buchanan Street: M/V collision – 11am. Officers investigating the collision determined that a 2015 Nissan Altima was coming out of the commercial parking lot and crossing Queens Chapel Road when a 2007 Toyota Camry traveling east on Queens Chapel struck the crossing Toyota. Both vehicles were disabled and were impounded.

3500 block of Shepherd Street: Burglary – 12:10pm. The homeowner returned home and discovered the rear door open and called police. Officers checked the residence and found no one inside but determined that the back door was forced open. The homeowner said that he does not believe anything was taken from inside.

28th and Shepard Streets: M/V collision – 2:05pm. The owner of a 1996 Honda came out and noticed damage to her vehicle. Officers located a witness who got the tag number of the striking vehicle. With that information officers located the driver and charged him with the collision and leaving the scene without stopping and providing identification.

4600 block of 25th Street: Theft from auto – 5:35pm. The victim told officers that she as she parked her car and got out she heard the passenger door open. When she turned to look she saw a man steal her purse from the front seat and jump into a waiting 4-door grey sedan. The suspect vehicle fled down 25th Street towards Arundel and then unknown. At about 12:30pm on February 7th officers were notified by DC police that a citizen turned in the victim’s purse. The purse was found in the 3400 block of Fort Lincoln Drive, NE. Most of the victim’s property was recovered in the purse.

February 5th:

One Municipal Place: Criminal citation – 10:15pm. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for drinking in public.

February 4th:

3100 block of Windom Road: Vehicle impound – 9:40pm. Officers impounded a 2002 Buick that was unregistered and did not have tags attached.

2500 block of Arundel Road: Trespassing – 9:15am. Officers located two juveniles trespassing in a basement laundry room. They were warned not to return to the property and sent on their way.

4500 block of 29th Street: Property damage – 6:55pm. The owner of a 2000 Suzuki motorcycle told officers that a neighbor’s son knocked the bike over causing minor damage. The neighbors agreed to pay for the damage to the bike.

February 3rd:

4300 block of Kaywood Place: Theft from auto – 7:30am. The owner of a 2011 Buick reported that sometime overnight someone stole the rear tag off her vehicle.

4300 block of 28th Place: Vehicle impound – 8am. Officers impounded a 2001 Ford for displaying expired tags.

3800 block of 34th Street: Criminal citation – 3pm. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for drinking in public.

2700 block of Upshur Street: Civil citation – 8:15pm. Officers issued a man a civil citation for possession of less that 10g of marijuana.

3100 block of Queens Chapel Road: Criminal citation – 10:35pm. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for drinking in public.

February 2nd:

4600 block of 25th Street: Vehicle impound – 10:30am. Officers impounded a 1995 Toyota that had a suspended registration with a pick up order on the tags.

3800 block of 34th Street: Criminal citation – 12:35pm. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for drinking in public.

One Municipal Place: Criminal citation – 3pm. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for drinking in public.

3100 block of Queens Chapel Road: Armed robbery – 1:40pm. The victim told officers that as she was walking home from work she was assaulted by a man who grabbed her by the hair and punched her in the back. Another man accosted her with a knife, stole her purse by cutting the strap and told her that she would be stabbed if she screamed. Both suspects fled on bicycles towards Hyattsville City. Suspect #1 was described as a tall, thin black male in his 40s with dread locks wearing a red shirt and khaki pants. Suspect #2 was described as a short black male with short hair wearing a black ball cap and a white shirt and nose and cheek piercings.

4000 block of 37th Street: Burglary – 5:40pm. Officers responded for the report of a burglary in progress. The reporting person met the officers and told them that she had seen a man standing on the back deck who fled the scene. Officers discovered that the back door had been forced open and there was damage to the door and dead bolt. The house is bank owned, vacant and that there is nothing of value inside. Officers were able to temporarily secure the door and the reporting person was going to contact someone to more permanently secure the residence.

4000 block of 36th Street: Burglary – 6:50pm. The victim told officers that upon arriving home she discovered that a first floor bedroom window was open and that someone had rummaged through several drawers. She did not notice anything taken. Officers discovered one set of foot prints in the snow leading away from the house but no other evidence.

Rhode Island Avenue and Volta Avenue, Brentwood: Field Interview – 9:30pm. Officers stopped four individuals suspected of being involved in a burglary and subsequent vehicle theft in the 4200 block of 34th Street. After releasing the subject’s officers noticed that one of them dropped a set of keys which turned out to have been stolen in the burglary and used to steal the victim’s car. Officers went by the victim’s residence and verified they were in fact the keys taken. On February 3rd MRPD officers stopped the suspect who dropped the keys and transported him to PGPD where he was released to detectives for questioning. He was later charged with the burglary and remanded to the custody of DOC.

4600 block of 40th Street: Recovered stolen auto – 11:10pm. Officers investigating a vehicle theft that occurred in the 4200 block of 34th Street located the vehicle parked and unoccupied in the 4600 block of 40th Street in North Brentwood. The vehicle was towed to PGPD for processing and the victim was notified by phone of the recovery.

February 1st:

3100 block of Queens Chapel Road: Emergency petition – 2:15am. Officers investigating a disturbance in an apartment determined that the man causing the disturbance was under the influence of a CDS, probably PCP. He was taken into custody and transported to Washington Adventist Hospital for emergency treatment.

January 31st:

3300 block of Chauncey Place: Warrant service – 5:15pm. Officers investigating a domestic disturbance discovered that the male half had an open warrant through Anne Arundel County for failing to appear in court. He was arrested on the warrant and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville.

2700 block of Arundel Road: Criminal citation – 11:55pm. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for vandalism to a door.

2700 block of Queens Chapel Road: Robbery – 1:30am. The victim told officers that he had just gotten out of his car when a black male wearing all black walked up behind him and placed an unknown object in his back. The suspect pushed the victim into the front driver’s seat of a 1996 Isuzu van (Maryland tags CA2641) and demanded his money. The suspect then stole the victim’s wallet containing cash and identification and fled the area on foot. A PGPD K-9 unit responded but was unable to locate the suspect. PGPD robbery detectives are continuing the investigation.

Police Report: February 7-13

February 13th:

3800 block of 34th Street: Criminal citation x3 – 11am. Officers issued each of three men a criminal citation for drinking in public.

4000 block of 29th Street: Vandalism to auto – 5:45pm.  The owner of a 1996 Ford told officers that he discovered the rear window to his car had been broken out.

February 12th:

4100 block of 34th Street: Vehicle impound – 3:25pm. Officers impounded a 2009 Honda for a compulsory insurance violation and failure to pay multiple parking citations.

32nd Street and Bunker Hill Road: Hit and run collision – 4:45pm. The reporting person told officers that her son in law’s vehicle was struck by an unknown vehicle sometime between 5am and 4:30pm today.

February 11th:

3700 block of 36th Street: Theft – 11:50am. The construction supervisor working on a house reported that a carpet/floor dryer he rented for the job had been stolen.

3200 block of Queenstown Drive: Theft from auto – 7pm. The owner of a 2012 Ford van came into the police station to report that the vehicle’s front tag had been stolen.

February 10th:

4300 block of 29th Street: Storehouse burglary – 6:20pm. The victim told officers that someone broke into his shed and stole two bicycles.

February 9th:

3200 block of Queens Chapel Road: Vehicle impound – 11am. Officers impounded a 2000 Honda for displaying expired tags that had been issued to another vehicle.

3100 block of Upshur Street: Vehicle impound – 4:40pm. Officers impounded a 2004 Ford that had been previously marked for 48- hour towing.

February 8th:

3200 block of Queenstown Drive: 2nd degree assault – 12:05am. The victim told officers that she and her boyfriend got into an altercation and he threw a cell phone at her causing a small laceration to her nose.

Officers canvassed the area for the boyfriend with negative results. The victim was advised of her options with the District Court Commissioner.

3700 block of 36th Street: Burglary – 11:15am. Officers discovered that someone broke into the residence through a second floor window. The house had been ransacked but the homeowner said nothing appeared to be missing.

3600 block of Bunker Hill Road (Bike Co-op): Theft – 4:20pm. A man came into the co-op and inquired about a red Schwinn bicycle. Staff allowed the man to test ride the bike and he never returned with it.

February 7th:

4300 block of Kaywood Drive: Vehicle impound – 8am. Officers impounded a 2003 Chevy Monte Carlo for displaying suspended tags and blocking traffic.

Conversations on Law Enforcement

MRPD Command Staff attended a conversation on law enforcement with retired Chief Charles Ramsey at the US Navy Memorial's Burke Theater last evening.
