The Mount Rainier Police Department’s weekly report is not intended to be a listing of every incident or call for service handled by the police department, but merely a general summary of incidents that may be of interest to the community. Some reports may be outside the date parameters due to extended investigations or other circumstances. Some cases are not included at all due to ongoing investigations.
2700 block of Allison Street: Vehicle impound – 9:20am. Officers impounded a 2002 Nissan Maxima for displaying expired tags.
2400 block of Queens Chapel Road: Warrant service – 8:30pm. Officers arrested a man who had an open arrest warrant through the Maryland Transit Administration for failing to appear in court on an alcohol related charge.
3200 block of Queenstown Drive: 2nd degree assault – 9:50pm. A husband and wife were involved in an argument because the wife thought her husband was cheating on him. The female punched the man in the face with a closed fist breaking his nose. She was arrested and charged with 2nd degree domestic assault.
3200 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Traffic – 10:35pm. Officers stopped a 2002 Honda after receiviong an ALPR alert that the tags were stolen. Further investigation confirmed that the tags had been reported stolen, the vehicle was not registered and the driver did not have a license. The driver was charged with multiple offenses, the tags were seized and the vehicle impounded.
3400 block of Newton Street: Fraud – 1:20pm. The victim told officers that he purchased tickets to a concert from a seller on Craig’s List. When he went to claim the tickets at the event he learned that the tickets had been claimed by someone else. The suspect used a free web based phone text application for the sale and used the Newton Street address.
3800 block of 33rd Street: EPS – 2:55pm. Officers issued a man criminal citations for indecent exposure and urinating in public. While the officers were interviewing him he became aggressive and said that he had not been taking his medication for several days. Based on his actions and his appearing incoherent and aggressive he was taken into custody and transported to Washington Adventist Hospital for emergency evaluation and treatment by the hospital staff.
3200 block of Varnum Street: Recovered stolen vehicle – 6:05am. Officers responded for the report of a motorcycle clocking a driveway. They contacted the owner of the bike and learned that it had been stolen from his residence sometime on August 3rd. The owner responded to the scene and took possession of his bike.
3100 block of Chillum Road: Theft from auto – 8:15am. The owner of a 2008 Honda told officers that sometime after 11:30pm last night someone stole all four wheels/tires off his vehicle.
One Municipal Place: Criminal citation – 9:05am. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for failing to obey a lawful order. He had been previously warned to leave the area after officers discovered him in an intoxicated state sleeping at the bus stop.

2900 block of Allison Street: Disorderly – 9:40am. Officers responded to the Queens Manor leasing office for the report of a former tenant who had vandalized a mailbox. While the officers were speaking to employees the former tenant came into the office screaming obscenities and disturbing the business. He was arrested, charged accordingly and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville.
One Municipal Place: Criminal citation – 11:15am. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for disturbing the peace by blocking pedestrian access to a bus stop bench. He had been previously warned to leave the area after officers discovered him in an intoxicated state sleeping at the bus stop.
4100 block of 33rd Street: Vandalism to auto – 1pm. The owner of a 1996 Toyota Camry told officers that she came out to her vehicle this morning and discovered that the rear passenger side window had been smashed out. Nothing had been stolen from inside the vehicle.
4600 block of 27th Street: Vehicle impound – 2:15pm. Officers impounded a 2009 Chevy for displaying tags that expired back in June of this year.
One Municipal Place: Criminal citation – 5:15am. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for failing to obey a lawful order. He had been previously warned to leave the area after officers discovered him in an intoxicated state sleeping at the bus stop.
2900 block of Arundel Road: Vehicle impound – 8:25am. Officers impounded a 1997 Chevy for displaying tags that expired back in April of this year.
3700 block of 35th Street: Vehicle impound – 11:50am. Officers impounded a 1999 Toyota that had been previously marked for 48-hour towing.
4000 block of 35th Street: Burglary – 6:25pm. The resident told officers that she and her son left home at about 5pm. When they returned at about 6:20 they discovered the back door open. There were no signs of forced entry into the home, but the resident said that the door was left unlocked. Several rooms had been ransacked and an iPad, a laptop computer and a set of speakers had been stolen. Officers were able to recover latent fingerprints for examination and further investigation.
3800 block of 37th Street: Violation of a court order – 11pm. Officers arrested a woman for violating a peace order issued by the District Court.
4000 block of 35th Street: Theft – 8:30am. The victim told officers that he came out this morning to discover that his bicycle had been stolen. He said that he had locked the bike to a railing and last saw it there on Sunday July 31st. The bike was described as a Giant brand Seek 3, black with yellow racing stripes. The victim’s bike lock was also stolen.
3200 block of Buchanan Street: Criminal citation – 8:40am. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for drinking in public.
3500 block of Bunker Hill Road: Death report – 5:35am. The mother of a 48 year old man told officers that she discovered her son unresponsive at about 5:20am this morning. EMS responded and pronounced him dead shortly thereafter. Mom said that she last saw her son alive watching television at about 2am. Officers contacted the decedent’s personal doctor who said that the man suffered from multiple medical conditions including heart failure, was in generally poor health and that he would sign the death certificate.
3400 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Criminal citation – 11:20am. Officers issued each of two men a criminal citation for drinking in public.
4000 block of 35th Street: Theft – 12:20am. The owner of a blue Shimano bicycle reported that he put his bike behind his house this morning at about 5:30. When he went back for it this afternoon he discovered it had been stolen.
2700 block of Arundel Road: Criminal citation – 5:50pm. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for drinking in public.
4600 block of 27th Street: Attempt robbery/carjacking – 7:35pm. The victim told officers that she was unloading her van when a black male approached her, implied that he had a gun and demanded her vehicle and waist pack that contained cash proceeds from her business. The suspect kicked the victim causing her to drop a bin containing glass bottled beverages. The suspect picked up a broken glass bottle and cut the victim several times on her arm and shoulder. In fear for her life, the victim screamed and yelled for help as she ran from her vehicle. The victim’s husband and several witnesses heard the victim cry for help and attempted to subdue and restrain him but he was able to break free and flee the scene. MRPD and PGPD officers canvassed the area for the suspect and eventually located him hiding in the basement of an apartment building in the 2500 block of Arundel Road. He was taken into custody and positively identified by the victim. Officers later learned that the suspect had three open warrants through Prince George’s County charging him with theft, burglary and escape. He was charged with attempted armed robbery, attempted carjacking, 1st degree assault and a variety of other charges. He was turned over to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville.
3800 block of 37th Street: MIR – 9:45pm. Officers served a peace order on the owner of a home that had been obtained by the owner’s roommates.
4100 block of 32nd Street: Burglary (4th degree) – 7:45am. Officers responded for the report of a man seen breaking into a vehicle. Officers spoke with the victim who pointed out the man who was seen breaking into the vehicle and was later seen looking into other vehicles in the block. The man was arrested, charged accordingly and delivered to the custody of DOC in Upper Marlboro.
4600 block of 25th Street: Domestic assault – 7:25pm. The victim told officers that she and the father of her child got into a verbal argument over the phone about parenting issues. When the man got home the argument rekindled and turned physical. The man slapped and choked the victim before he fled the scene. EMS responded to check the victim for injury but she refused treatment and said she would go her own. A lethality assessment screen was completed and the victim refused help from the crisis center. The domestic violence unit was notified.
3700 block of Shepherd Street: Theft from auto – 9:10pm. The owner of a 1996 Toyota truck told officers that sometime between 5pm on the 29th and the time he called police someone smashed out the truck’s back window and stole several of his tools from inside. Officers were unable to process the vehicle for evidence due to weather conditions and no witnesses were identified.
