Anti-Gun Program

Prince George’s County has an anti-crime gun program designed to help recover illegal guns and guns used in a crime. Anyone who knows the whereabouts of a gun used in a crime or a gun that someone possesses illegally can call 866-643-2369. Tipsters may be eligible for a $1,000 reward.

Mt. Rainier residents who own firearms that they would like to turn in may call the police department at 301-985-6580. You can make arrangements to bring the gun to the department or we'll send an officer to pick it up. If you bring any firearm to the department, please call ahead of time and make sure it is unloaded and in a case or other packaging.

Oh, and please, do not just walk into the station with a gun in plain view. It makes the staff nervous.

Police Report: September 4-8

September 4 th : 2500 block of Queens Chapel Road : Emergency petition – 4:50 am. Officers on patrol observed a highly intoxicated man walking through on-coming traffic carrying two 14” long kitchen knives. When the officers stopped the man and ordered him to drop the knives he refused and said that he wanted to die and was going to kill himself. The officers also observed that the man was bleeding from his mouth and had blood on the back of his shirt. A member of the man’s family arrived on the scene and convinced the man to drop the knives and, after a brief struggle officers were able to get him under control. Fire/rescue personnel arrived to transport the man to the hospital and during their on-scene evaluation officers observed that he had a large amount of shattered glass in his hair and on his face along with several long cut/scratch markings on his back just above his waist line. Police Report: May 8-11

Friday May 8th : 3400 block of 11 Newton Street : At about 2 pm officers responded for the report of a woman who had been assaulted by her boyfriend. The boyfriend allegedly punched the woman in the mouth and choked her. She told the officers that she did not want any police assistance and refused to tell the officers what had occurred. She was referred to the District Court Commissioner if she decided to press charges at a later time. Saturday May 9th : Nothing significant to report. Sunday May 10th : 4500 block of Eastern Avenue (BP station) : At about 11 am officers responded for the report of a stolen auto. The officers met with the victim/owner who told them that he left the keys to his 2002 Lincoln on the front seat when he went inside to pay for gas. When he came out of the store he saw his Lincoln being driven up Eastern Avenue towards Rhode Island Avenue by a black male (no further description).
