MRPD Using Lexipol to Update Policies

Mount Rainier Citizens:

As the Chief of Police for the City of Mount Rainier, one of my main responsibilities is to ensure that your police department is providing the most professional service to each of you as residents of our community.  Part of that effort is to ensure that the MRPD has policies and procedures in place that provide for the best practices in law enforcement.  With that in mind, I am excited to share with you that we have contracted with a company called LEXIPOL to help us develop and utilize state-specific policy content that is up to date and evolves as court rulings effect the law enforcement profession.

What is Lexipol?

Lexipol is a nationally recognized company that is the leading provider of public safety policies and training in the United States. The company was founded in 2003 by Risk Management gurus Gordon Graham and Bruce Praet, former law enforcement officers. Today, Lexipol offers its services to 32 states and has a staff of more than 120 people representing 2,094 years of combined public safety experience.

How is the Lexipol policy content different?

Using Lexipol will help us ensure that our policies are up to date and legally defensible.  They represent our industries best standards, which means more protection for us as a city. With Lexipol, our manual will continuously be on the front edge of best practices in law enforcement because their legal and content development staff will send policy updates when laws or court rulings change. This service also provides daily computer based trainings which will ensure your officers learn and retain policies.

What are the next steps?

Last year we began process of reviewing the Lexipol policies alongside our existing policies.  We are customizing each policy to fit our department and I expect the completed manual to be in place within the next six months. As we update our policies and convert them to the Lexipol format we will publish them to the department’s web site. Interested parties may view these policies at the following link:

Working with Lexipol is an important step to providing the highest level of professionalism and service to you. If you have questions about Lexipol please refer to the Lexipol website at www.Lexipol.com.

Happy holidays,

Michael E. Scott
