Police Report: June 2-8

The Mount Rainier Police Department’s weekly report is not intended to be a listing of every incident or call for service handled by the police department, but merely a general summary of incidents that may be of interest to the community. Some reports may be outside the date parameters due to extended investigations or other circumstances. Some cases are not included at all due to ongoing investigations.

June 8th:

4600 block of 29th Street: Vandalism – 9:40pm. The resident told officers that someone broke one of her apartment windows with a rock. No suspect information was obtained and the resident was advised to contact maintenance to get the window repaired.

2900 block of Allison Street: Residential burglary – 11:35pm. The resident told officers that sometime between 9am and 7pm today someone entered his apartment and stole several items of his personal property. He said that he notified maintenance that there was a problem with his bathroom and they said they would send someone out to take care of the problem. There were no signs of forced entry. Officers are trying to identify the maintenance employees who responded to fix the bathroom to see if they know anything about the theft.

June 7th:

3600 block of Perry Street: Traffic – 11:25am. Officers stopped a 2010 Mazda 6 for a traffic violation. Further investigation revealed that the driver did not have a license and there was an MVA pick-up order for the tags. The driver was issued four State traffic citations, the tags were seized for return to MVA and the vehicle was impounded.

4100 block of 31st Street: Property damage – 2:25pm. Officers responded for the report of a damaged fence. When they arrived they documented the fact that a tree from an unoccupied private property had fallen onto and damaged a neighboring property owner’s wooden fence.

June 6th:

4500 block of 30th Street: Vehicle impound – 1:50am. Officers impounded a 2006 Kia Optima that had been parked in the same location for several days and which had been previously marked for 48-hour towing.

3400 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Criminal citation (x2) – 9:05am. Officers issued each of two men a criminal citation for drinking alcoholic beverages in a public place.

4100 block of 30th Street: MIR – 3pm. Officers responded for the report of a dog having been attacked by another dog on June 4th. Officers spoke with the owner of the victim dog who said that he was walking his dogs when the attacking dog came out of a private yard and started to fight with the victim dog.  A resident of the house observed the incident and quickly broke up the fight between the dogs. The officers documented the incident and the parties exchanged information so that the situation could be resolved amicably.

June 5th:

3300 block of Chillum Road (7-11): Warrant service – 9:35am. Officers conducting a business check heard what they thought was an argument coming from the back storage room. Further investigation revealed that a patron was attempting to access the employee restroom without permission. The store manager advised the subject to leave and the subject threatened to assault the manger. A warrant check of the individual revealed that he had an open warrant through Prince George’s County for theft under $1,000. He was arrested on the warrant and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville.

3400 block of Otis Street: Vehicle impound – 10:30am. Officers impounded a 2004 Honda Accord that had been previously marked for 48-hour towing.

3300 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Theft/fraud – 4:40pm. Officers responded for the report of a person attempting to cash a bad check. When they arrived they detained the man and verified that the check he was attempting to pass was indeed forged by him. He was arrested, charged accordingly and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville.

3700 block of 34th Street: Criminal citation – 4:55pm. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for drinking an alcoholic beverage in a public place.

2700 block of Upshur Street: Domestic dispute – 11pm. Officers interviewed a woman who said that her boyfriend assaulted her. Upon further investigation the officers could find no evidence of an assault; however the boyfriend elected to leave for the night to try and ensure the peace was kept. Officers completed a Domestic Violence Lethality Assessment to document the incident and to assess the need for further assistance for the female half.

June 4th:

Nothing significant to report.

June 3rd:

3400 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Criminal citation – 10:10am. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for drinking an alcoholic beverage in a public place.

3600 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Criminal citation – 3:20pm. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for drinking an alcoholic beverage in a public place.

3200 block of Otis Street: Strong arm robbery – 8:15pm. The 13 year old victim told officers that he was approached by two juvenile males who he recognized as fellow students at Hyattsville Middle School. Both suspects shoved the victim to the ground and stole his cell phone before fleeing the scene. A follow-up investigation is underway with HMS officials and Hyattsville PD to identify and charge both assailants.

4700 block of 25th Street: Residential burglary – 11pm. The resident told officers that sometime between 10:30am and 8pm today, someone entered his apartment and stole a quantity of US Currency. Investigation revealed no forced entry and both front door locks were secure; however, the bathroom window was unlocked. Officers processed the bathroom window for latent evidence and found none.

June 2nd:

3200 block of Upshur Street: Found property – 7:55am. Officers recovered a woman’s purse from the resident who found it. Upon further investigation the officers learned there had been a theft from auto in Brentwood the previous night where a similar purse was stolen. Officers went to the victim’s residence, conformed that the pursed was the one stolen from her vehicle and returned it to her.

3100 block of Varnum Street: Attempt theft from auto – 8:30am. Officers patrolling the area discovered a 2008 Nissan Frontier with a broken window. Officers contacted the vehicle’s owner and learned that he parked and secured his vehicle the night before. The officers’ investigation revealed that person(s) unknown used a pry tool to get into the vehicle where they tried, unsuccessfully, to steal the factory GPS unit.

2300 block of Varnum Street (7-11): Theft – 6pm. A store clerk told officers that a black male in his 30s came into the store, placed an ice cream bar in his coat pocket and left the store without paying for it. Officers were unable to locate the man after canvassing the area.

4200 block of 34th Street: Hit and run M/V collision – 6:45pm. Officers on patrol were stopped by the owner of a 2000 Nissan Frontier. He told the officers that he had just discovered that his vehicle had sustained damage from a second, unknown vehicle that failed to remain at the scene after striking his vehicle. The striking vehicle hit the Nissan’s driver side causing extensive damage.

3300 block of Chillum Road: MIR – 11:50pm. Officers responded to interview a 12 year old boy who alleged that he had been assaulted earlier in the day by his stepfather. Officers are familiarly with the boy due to ongoing family issues. Officers were unable to see any signs of injury and returned him to his residence. The boy’s statements were documented and officers will be conducting a follow-investigation with Child Protective Services. CPS is also aware of the family’s situation and has an active investigation in process with the family.

The following information  comes courtesy  of the  New Jersey Cybersecurity & Communications Integration Cell Public cell phone charging stations supplied with power cables or USB ports located in stores, airports, libraries, and schools may seem like a convenient way to charge your mobile devices on-the-go, but can you be sure that your device and data will be safe if you connect? These kiosks can contain concealed computers that attempt to extract data such as contact information, photos, and videos from connected devices, unbeknownst to the users. Additionally, malicious or compromised charging stations can expose devices to the risk of a malware infection. Even if the charging station isn’t malicious, the manufacturer or owner of the kiosk may require users to input their email addresses or phone numbers in order to charge their devices, potentially exposing them to unwanted marketing campaigns, spam emails, and scam calls. Police Report: May 8-11

Friday May 8th : 3400 block of 11 Newton Street : At about 2 pm officers responded for the report of a woman who had been assaulted by her boyfriend. The boyfriend allegedly punched the woman in the mouth and choked her. She told the officers that she did not want any police assistance and refused to tell the officers what had occurred. She was referred to the District Court Commissioner if she decided to press charges at a later time. Saturday May 9th : Nothing significant to report. Sunday May 10th : 4500 block of Eastern Avenue (BP station) : At about 11 am officers responded for the report of a stolen auto. The officers met with the victim/owner who told them that he left the keys to his 2002 Lincoln on the front seat when he went inside to pay for gas. When he came out of the store he saw his Lincoln being driven up Eastern Avenue towards Rhode Island Avenue by a black male (no further description). A check of the area for the stolen car proved negative and a lookout for it was gi
