Police Report: February 2-8

The Mount Rainier Police Department’s weekly report is not intended to be a listing of every incident or call for service handled by the police department, but merely a general summary of incidents that may be of interest to the community. Some reports may be outside the date parameters due to extended investigations or other circumstances. Some cases are not included at all due to ongoing investigations.

February 8th:

3300 block of Chillum Road: Vehicle impound – 11am. Officers impounded a 1992 Honda Civic that was parked displaying an altered temporary registration tag.

4500 block of Russell Avenue: Vehicle impound – 5:15pm. Officers patrolling with an automated license plate reader received an alert on a 2001 VW Passat that had a suspended registration and a pick up order for the tags. Officers stopped the vehicle and verified the ALPR information. The driver was issued the appropriate traffic citations, the tags were seized for return to MVA and the vehicle was impounded.

4500 block of Eastern Avenue (BP station): Stolen vehicle – 5:30pm. The owner of a 2006 Lexus told officers that he parked his vehicle in the BP station parking lot and left it running while he went inside to check his lottery tickets. He said that since the vehicle was equipped with a push button start he thought that the vehicle was not drivable if he was away from it. He was wrong. A tall individual was seen entering the vehicle and driving off with it in an unknown direction. 

February 7th:

3000 block of Queens Chapel Road: Miscellaneous incident – 7:30am. Officers were notified that DC police along with PGPD were serving a search warrant in the Rainier Manor apartments in reference to a homicide. The suspect in question was located at the apartment and taken into custody for questioning.

4000 block of 29th Street: Fraud – 12:55pm. The victim told officers that while in the process of applying for a home loan he discovered that someone had used his social security number without his permission to open a Verizon account.

4000 block of 30th Street: Lost property – 2:15pm. The victim told officers that at about 4pm on the 5th she dropped her wallet in her driveway as she was getting out of her vehicle. Later, when she went back to find her wallet she discovered it was not in the driveway.

2500 block of Queens Chapel Road: Vehicle impound – 6:30pm. Officers patrolling with an automated license plate reader received an alert on a 2000 Jeep Cherokee that had a suspended registration and a pick up order for the tags. Officers stopped the vehicle and verified the ALPR information. The driver was issued the appropriate traffic citations, the tags were seized for return to MVA and the vehicle was impounded.

February 6th:

2700 block of Upshur Street: Vehicle impound – 12:35pm. Officers responded for the report of a suspicious person sitting in a 2009 Mitsubishi Gallant smoking CDS. When the officers arrived they spoke with the man in question and found that there was no CDS involved. However a records check of the vehicle revealed that the registration was suspended and there was a pick up order for the tags. The tags were seized for return to MVA and the vehicle was impounded. No charges were placed against the occupant.

3400 block of Newton Street: Burglary – 5:55pm. The resident told officers that she left her apartment at about 7:30 this morning and when she returned she discovered that electronic items had been stolen from several rooms. Officers located pry marks on the front door but no other evidence or witnesses.

February 5th:

Arundel Road and 34th Street: M/V collision – 9:25am. Investigation revealed that a 2001 Ford F-150 truck was traveling northbound on Allison Street and proceeded to make a right hand turn eastbound onto 34th Street. A 2004 Toyota Tundra traveling eastbound on 34th Street failed to stop at the red traffic signal striking the truck. The Toyota subsequently collided with a traffic light support pole.

February 4th:

4500 block of 31st Street: Traffic – 10am. Officers on patrol received an alert on a mobile license plate reader that the registration of a 1999 Chevy Tahoe was suspended with a pick up order for the tags. Officers stopped the vehicle, seized the tags for return to MVA, cited the driver accordingly and impounded the vehicle for safekeeping.

2500 block of Queens Chapel Road: Vehicle impound – 11:15am. Officers on patrol came across a 2005 Dodge Caravan that was displaying registration plates that expired in 2012. The vehicle was cited for the violation and impounded for safekeeping.

4600 block of 29th Street: Unauthorized use of a motor vehicle – 12:15pm. The owner of a 1996 Jeep Cherokee told officers that he registered the vehicle in his name to help out a friend. When he began receiving speed camera violations from New York and Pennsylvania he contacted his friend and told him he wanted his tags back and for the friend to register the vehicle in his own name. The friend told him that he was presently out of the country and did not know who had possession of the vehicle. The victim wanted to report the unauthorized use as an effort to get his tags and vehicle returned to him.

February 3rd:

Nothing significant to report.

February 2nd:

2300 block of Varnum Street: Criminal citation – 11:20pm. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for possession of an open container of an alcoholic beverage in a public place.

3000 block of Arundel Road: Warrant service – 3am. Officers responded at the request of a woman who said that her former boyfriend was in her apartment building and refused to leave. The officers found the man and further investigation revealed that he had an open arrest warrant for violation of an ex-parte order involving the complainant. He was arrested on the warrant and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville.

3100 block of Queens Chapel Road: Emergency petition – 10am. Officers received information from the Grandmother of a man that her grandson had not taken his prescribed medication and had left the house without a jacket or shoes. The officers located the man and after questioning him, determined that his welfare should be evaluated by medical personnel. He was transported to Washington Adventist Hospital and released to staff for an emergency medical/psychological evaluation.

4200 block of 34th Street: Vandalism to auto – 11:35am. The owner of a 2000 GMC Yukon told officers that sometime between 8:30pm on the 1st and the time she called police someone vandalized her truck. She showed the officers where someone put a long scratch from the front driver side bumper to the front of the driver‘s door. The driver’s side view mirror had been detached from the framing but was hanging along side of the vehicle.  No evidence or witnesses to the damage could be identified.

2700 block of Queens Chapel Road: Located missing juvenile – 1:40pm. Officers were contacted by DC police and advised that they had taken a missing person report on a 16 year old female. DC said that the girl may be staying at her boyfriend’s residence on Queens Chapel Road. Officers went to the residence and located the missing juvenile. She was transported to MRPD headquarters where she was released to her mother.

3600 block of Perry Street: Violation of an ex-parte order – 4:45pm. Officers responded for the report of a domestic dispute possibly involving a handgun. When they arrived they discovered the male half of the dispute walking away from the scene and detained him. The female half said that he had grabbed her and implied that he had a gun. No gun was found but the officers discovered that the woman had an ex parte order against the man. He was arrested for violating the order and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville.
