Police Report: October 19-25

The Mount Rainier Police Department’s weekly report is not intended to be a listing of every incident or call for service handled by the police department, but merely a general summary of incidents that may be of interest to the community. Some reports may be outside the date parameters due to extended investigations or other circumstances. Some cases are not included at all due to ongoing investigations.

October 25th:

33rd and Perry Streets: Criminal citation (x2) – 9:15pm. Officers issued both a man and woman criminal citations for drinking in public and urinating in public.

3300 block of Perry Street: Criminal citation (x2) – 9:40pm. Officers issued each of two men a criminal citation for possession of open alcoholic beverages inside a motor vehicle.

October 24th:

3300 block of Bunker Hill Road: Warrant service – 12:20am. Officers stopped two suspicious men for a field interview. During the interview officers discovered that one of the men had an open arrest warrant through Prince George’s County for 2nd Degree Assault. He was subsequently arrested and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville.

4000 block of 29th Street: Child abuse – 6:45pm. After a verbal altercation with his mother and a physical altercation with the mother’s live-in boyfriend a 15 year old boy was locked, naked, outside his apartment. Officers had fire/rescue personnel force entry into the apartment where the boy was able to obtain clothes and other personal belongings. Arrangements were made to deliver the boy to the temporary custody of his grandmother. Officers have applied for an arrest warrant charging the mother and her boyfriend with child abuse.

3400 block of Eastern Avenue: Vehicle impound – 10:30pm. Officers impounded a 2007 Chevy Impala for displaying tags that expired in November of 2013.

October 23rd:

2700 block of Webster Street: Theft from auto – 7:25am. The owner of a 2012 Toyota Camry told officers that sometime between 10:20pm last night and the time he called police someone stole the temporary tag off his vehicle.

4000 block of 34th Street (Oscar’s Flower Shop): Theft – 10:25am. The victim told officers that the suspect came into the store to pick up a previously ordered dress. The suspect paid for the dress and as she was leaving the store through the rear entrance she was seen stealing the victim’s purse. The suspect fled in a white Nissan Altima before the victim could confront her.

3100 block of Queens Chapel Road (Advanced Auto Parts): Theft – 2:10pm. The store clerk told officers that a man came into the store and ordered several parts. The clerk retrieved the parts and as he was ringing up the sale the man asked for another part. When the clerk left the register to get the part the man gathered up the original parts and fled the store.

3100 block of Chillum Road: Suspicious person – 5pm. Officers responded for the report of a man with a gun hanging out in the 7-11 parking lot. When the officers arrived they identified the man in question who, upon seeing the officers fled on a bicycle. Officers chased the man who abandoned the bike and continued to flee on foot. As he did so he dropped a CO2 BB gun. Officers retrieved the firearm and were able to obtain information as to the suspect’s identity and where he lives. The incident is still under investigation with charges pending.

3500 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Traffic – 9:25pm. Officers stopped a 2004 Ford Focus for a traffic violation. Further investigation revealed that the driver did not have a license. He was issued several traffic citations and the vehicle was impounded.

October 22nd:

Nothing significant to report.

October 21st:

3800 block of Upshur Street: 2nd degree assault – 4:55pm. The victim told officers that while she was in her back yard she reached over into the suspect’s yard to pet his dog.  The suspect came outside his house and began to yell derogatory remarks to her and then threw a stick at her.  The victim said that there had been tension between them since she reported him to Animal Control. The victim was advised of her options with a District Court Commissioner.

3700 block of 34th Street: Criminal citation – 9:05am. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for possession of an open container of an alcohol in a public place.

October 20th:

3100 block of Queens Chapel Road: DUI – 1:50am. Officers stopped a 2002 Honda Accord that was speeding and almost struck a police vehicle, several parked cars and a light pole. Further investigation revealed that the driver was under the influence of alcohol. She was arrested, charged accordingly and her vehicle was impounded.

3300 block of Chillum Road (7-11): Theft – 10:45am. The store clerk told officers that a man came into the store, removed several sandwiches from a shelf and obtained a soda from the fountain machine. He then placed the items on the sales counter as if to pay for them but instead of paying he grabbed the items and fled out the door.

4100 block of 28th Street: Theft from auto – 11:40am. The owner of a 2011 Dodge told officers that he returned to his vehicle this morning to discover that someone had rummaged through the glove box and stole several items of his personal property.

October 19th:

3200 block of Rhode Island Avenue: DUI – 12:45am. Officers stopped a vehicle that was driving without its headlights illuminated. Further investigation revealed that the driver was under the influence of alcohol. She was arrested, charged accordingly and her vehicle was impounded.

3200 block of Queens Chapel Road: Hit and run collision – 1am. The owner of a 2003 Toyota told officers that he parked his vehicle in the Sunoco gas station parking lot at about 10pm on the 18th. When he came back for the vehicle this morning he discovered damage to the driver’s door. Officers determined that the damage was likely caused by someone backing into the vehicle.

3200 block of Queens Chapel Road: M/V collision – 8:30am. Officers patrolling the area observed a 2004 BMW crash into the median strip. Further investigation revealed that the driver was turning from Chillum Road onto Queens Chapel Road when he spun the vehicle’s tires losing control causing the collision. The driver was also found to have a suspended driver’s license. He driver was charged accordingly and his vehicle was impounded.

3100 block of Queens Chapel Road: MIR – 12:05pm. Officers responded for the report of a domestic dispute. The female half told officers that she had been involved in an altercation with other family members over a cell phone and left her child behind when she left the scene. Officers assisted her in resolving the issue and completed a lethality assessment screen. During the investigation officers learned that one of the parties involved had been reported missing to Baltimore Police earlier in the day. BPD was contacted to report that he had been found.

4100 block of 30th Street: Theft from auto – 6:45pm. The owner of a 2000 Ford Ranger truck told officers that sometime between 4pm on the 18th and 5pm today someone stole both tags off his truck. No evidence/witnesses were identified.

4300 block of 28th Place: Vehicle impound – 7:05pm. Officers impounded a 2013 Buick after finding it illegally parked in a reserved handicapped space.

The following information  comes courtesy  of the  New Jersey Cybersecurity & Communications Integration Cell Public cell phone charging stations supplied with power cables or USB ports located in stores, airports, libraries, and schools may seem like a convenient way to charge your mobile devices on-the-go, but can you be sure that your device and data will be safe if you connect? These kiosks can contain concealed computers that attempt to extract data such as contact information, photos, and videos from connected devices, unbeknownst to the users. Additionally, malicious or compromised charging stations can expose devices to the risk of a malware infection. Even if the charging station isn’t malicious, the manufacturer or owner of the kiosk may require users to input their email addresses or phone numbers in order to charge their devices, potentially exposing them to unwanted marketing campaigns, spam emails, and scam calls. Police Report: May 8-11

Friday May 8th : 3400 block of 11 Newton Street : At about 2 pm officers responded for the report of a woman who had been assaulted by her boyfriend. The boyfriend allegedly punched the woman in the mouth and choked her. She told the officers that she did not want any police assistance and refused to tell the officers what had occurred. She was referred to the District Court Commissioner if she decided to press charges at a later time. Saturday May 9th : Nothing significant to report. Sunday May 10th : 4500 block of Eastern Avenue (BP station) : At about 11 am officers responded for the report of a stolen auto. The officers met with the victim/owner who told them that he left the keys to his 2002 Lincoln on the front seat when he went inside to pay for gas. When he came out of the store he saw his Lincoln being driven up Eastern Avenue towards Rhode Island Avenue by a black male (no further description). A check of the area for the stolen car proved negative and a lookout for it was gi
