Police report: October 26 - November 1

The Mount Rainier Police Department’s weekly report is not intended to be a listing of every incident or call for service handled by the police department, but merely a general summary of incidents that may be of interest to the community. Some reports may be outside the date parameters due to extended investigations or other circumstances. Some cases are not included at all due to ongoing investigations.

November 1st:

3600 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Animal bite – 9:45am. The owner told officers that his dog had escaped from the yard, was struck by a car and sustained a broken leg. When the owner tried to pick up the dog it bit him and subsequently bit his wife. Animal control responded to the scene and took possession of the dog to euthanize it at the owner’s request.

3100 block of Shepherd Street: Commercial burglary – 10am. The reporting person told officers that someone had broken into the church’s trustee room and ransacked it. The reporting person went on to state that the room was last seen intact at about 9pm on October 29th when the church was left unsecured for the trick or treating event. It is the reporting person’s belief that the incident happened during that time. Nothing was taken as there is no currency kept at the location.

4100 block of 31st Street: MIR – 12:51pm. Officers assisted a man with serving a temporary protective order against his brother. The brother retrieved some personal belongings and left the residence.

October 31st:

3500 block of Bunker Hill Road: Theft from auto – 11:40am. The owner of a 2013 Nissan Altima told officers that sometime between 1am on the 31st and the time she called police someone smashed out the vehicle’s front window and stole a bag of audio tapes and a bag of makeup from inside.

3100 block of Perry Street: Theft from auto – 12:35pm. The owner of a 2008 Ford Explorer told officers that she parked her vehicle in good condition at about 11:30pm on the 30th. When she returned to the vehicle this afternoon she discovered the door to the vehicle open and a laptop computer missing from inside. The victim is unsure if the vehicle was locked when she last left it.

2700 block of Webster Street: Domestic – 4:15pm. Officers responded for the report of a domestic dispute and upon arrival learned that a couple had been involved in a heated argument over a cell phone. There were no signs of a physical encounter between the two subjects. Officers completed a lethality screening and advised both parties of their options. The female decided to leave the residece at that time.

October 30th:

One Municipal Place: Criminal citation – 1:35am. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for disorderly conduct.

4300 block of 31st Street: Theft from auto – 7am. The owner of a 2014 Cadillac told officers that he came out to his vehicle this morning to find it up on blocks and all four wheels and tires missing. He also said that the rear window was smashed out and there was damage to the driver’s door lock. He said that whoever was responsible also stole several items of his personal property from inside the vehicle. No evidence was recovered and no witnesses were identified.

4000 block of 29th Street: Property damage – 2:55pm. The resident told officers that a group of neighborhood kids were playing and kicked a ball breaking a window. The leasing office instructed him to get a police report to document the damage.

4300 block of 28th Place: Stolen auto – 12:35pm. The reporting person told officers that her father’s 1999 Cadillac Seville had been stolen. She said that the vehicle was being used by a friend who discovered it missing.

3200 block of Bunker Hill Road: Burglary6:45pm. The resident told officers that she returned home from work to find her rear door forced in and a piece of the door frame lying on kitchen floor. The residence was searched by the officers and processed for latent evidence with negative results. The home was in such disarray from being rummaged through that the resident could not advise if anything had been stolen. She said that she would call back once she had checked the house thoroughly. A canvas of area neighbors was conducted with negative results.

4500 block of Eastern Avenue (BP station): Property damage – 8:05pm. The owner of a 2010 Toyota Camry told officers that he parked his vehicle and went inside the BP station to make a purchase. When he returned to his vehicle he discovered damage to one of its quarter panels. Further investigation revealed no further information.

3200 block of Bunker Hill Road: Vandalism – 8:05pm. The reporting person told officers that a resident was served with a peace order on October 29th by PG Sheriffs. The resident returned this morning and turned on all the water and the oven, placed thumb tacks all over the floor and smashed pumpkins all over the floor. The suspect was not on the scene when officers arrived and an investigation into charges of destruction of property is underway.

October 29th:

3400 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Assault – 8:50pm. Officers responded for the report of a large fight in progress. When they arrived the participants had dispersed. The officers were able to locate one participant who was suffering from a head wound. He refused to cooperate with the officers and appeared to be under the influence of PCP. Fire/rescue personnel responded and transported him to a local hospital for treatment.

3100 block of Otis Street: Criminal citation (x2) – 10am. Officers issued each of two men a criminal citation for drinking in public.

3100 block of Chillum Road: Stolen auto – 11:50am. The owner of a 2000 Dodge van told officers that he came out to his vehicle this morning and discovered that it had been stolen sometime overnight. No evidence/witnesses could be identified.

4000 block of 36th Street: EPS – 4:15pm. Officers responded for the report of a man firing a handgun into the air. The man had retreated into his home prior to the officers’ arrival. After some coaxing the man came out, surrendered to the officers and told them that the gun was in a bedroom under a pillow. The gun was located and seized for evidence. Because of the man’s mental condition he was transported to Washington Adventist Hospital and released to medical personnel for an emergency psychiatric examination.

3300 block of Chauncey Place: Attempt stolen auto -7:45am. The owner of a 2006 Dodge Caravan told officers that he came out to his vehicle this morning to discover damage to the vehicle’s ignition and the passenger side door lock damaged. Vehicle was processed for evidence with negative results.

October 28th:

4100 block of 30th Street: Theft from auto (supplement) – 1;20am. Officers were notified that DC police officers had recovered the license plates stolen from a 2000 Ford Ranger truck back on October 19th. The plates were found attached to an unoccupied stolen vehicle in the 2800 block of 17th Street SE. The tags were recovered and logged as property in DC.

3100 block of Queens Chapel Road: Injured person – 9:40am. A woman told officers that she was walking along the sidewalk when she tripped on a metal object and fell. The female refused medical attention but requested the incident documented.

3000 block of Arundel Road: Domestic – 4:35pm. A woman reported that she has been allowing the father of her child to stay in her apartment in violation of a protective order. She accused the man of absconding with her television. She was advised that she needed to seek charges against the man through the District Court Commissioner.

October 27th:

3500 block of Newton Place: Suspicious vehicle – 2:15am. Officers responded to check on a vehicle that was parked with the doors open and no one around. Further investigation revealed that the vehicle was not stolen but the keys were in the ignition. The officers seized the keys for safekeeping and locked and secured the vehicle.

2800 block of Taylor Street: Theft – 1:10am. The victim told officers that when he got home a former girlfriend was waiting for him. He told the woman to leave the house and she became irate and stole his car keys and cell phone as she left. When he went to his vehicle to get the woman’s information for the officers he discovered that it had been rummaged through and his cell phone had been left inside. The victim applied for and received an arrest warrant from the District Court Commissioner. 

3300 block of Chillum Road: Criminal citation – 3:05am. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for possession of several open alcoholic beverages in public.

3200 block of Chillum Road: Domestic9:50am. Officers responded for the report of a domestic dispute and learned that there was an ongoing dispute between roommates. One party claimed she had been assaulted but changed her story multiple times and had no signs of injury. Officers documented the incident, completed a lethality assessment screen and advised the parties of their options with a District Court Commissioner.

4000 block of 34th Street: Dog bite – 12:45pm. The victim told officers that he was walking his dog when another dog (a Chow) ran up and bit him on his lower leg and began fighting with his dog. The victim was able to get away, secure his own dog at home and return to contact the owner of the Chow.

4600 block of 29th Street: Theft from auto – 1:05pm. The owner of a 1991 Olds Cutlass told officers that she came out to her vehicle this afternoon to discover that someone had stolen the month expiration sticker off the rear tag.

2900 block of Bunker Hill Road: Littering – 4pm. The complainant told officers that he was driving behind a Hyundai Elantra when he saw the driver throw a plastic fruit cup out of the window. The complainant honked the horn and gestured to the driver about the littering and the driver became irate and started to curse and yell. Children who where passengers in the vehicle then began to thrown more trash out the back windows of the vehicle. The complainant at that time exited the area to avoid a confrontation.

4700 block of 25th Street: Theft from auto – 5:30pm. The owner of a 2004 GMC van told officers that sometime between 6pm on the 26th and 6am this morning someone stole both license plates off his vehicle.

4300 block of 28th Place: Vehicle impound – 5:50pm. Officers ticketed and impounded a 2014 Honda Civic for being parked in a reserved handicapped space.

3200 block of Queens Chapel Road: Vandalism to auto – 6:25pm. The owner of a 2003 Mercedes told officers that he sometime between 8pm on the 24th and 8am this morning someone scratched the hood of his vehicle.

October 26th:

4200 block of 34th Street: Property damage – 6:25pm. The owner of a 2001 Chevy told officers that as she was driving west on 34th Street she heard the sound of glass shattering and realized that the sound was her rear driver side window. Officers examined the damage and could not identify the cause of the breakage.

3300 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Property damage – 2:10am. The owner of a 2013 Chevy told officers that she parked her vehicle at around 1am. When she returned about an hour later she discovered that the rear quarter panel had been struck and pushed inward.

These kiosks can contain concealed computers that attempt to extract data such as contact information, photos, and videos from connected devices, unbeknownst to the users. Additionally, malicious or compromised charging stations can expose devices to the risk of a malware infection. Police Report: May 8-11

Friday May 8th : 3400 block of 11 Newton Street : At about 2 pm officers responded for the report of a woman who had been assaulted by her boyfriend. The boyfriend allegedly punched the woman in the mouth and choked her. She told the officers that she did not want any police assistance and refused to tell the officers what had occurred. She was referred to the District Court Commissioner if she decided to press charges at a later time. Saturday May 9th : Nothing significant to report. Sunday May 10th : 4500 block of Eastern Avenue (BP station) : At about 11 am officers responded for the report of a stolen auto. The officers met with the victim/owner who told them that he left the keys to his 2002 Lincoln on the front seat when he went inside to pay for gas. When he came out of the store he saw his Lincoln being driven up Eastern Avenue towards Rhode Island Avenue by a black male (no further description). A check of the area for the stolen car proved negative and a lookout for it was gi
