Police Report: April 10-16

The Mount Rainier Police Department’s weekly report is not intended to be a listing of every incident or call for service handled by the police department, but merely a general summary of incidents that may be of interest to the community. Some reports may be outside the date parameters due to extended investigations or other circumstances. Some cases are not included at all due to ongoing investigations.

April 16th:

3100 block of Webster Street: M/V collision – 3am. Officers investigating a hit and run collision located a 2007 Nissan Altima that was identified as the striking vehicle. The officers had Montgomery County Police contact the car’s owner and learned that her son had the vehicle. The son was located, returned to the scene and cited accordingly.

3200 block of Taylor Street: Domestic assault – 10:35am. The victim told officers that her husband came home late and when she asked him where he had been and who he was with an altercation ensued. The man kicked her and struck her in the upper body with his elbows before leaving the residence. A lethality assessment screen was conducted and the victim was put in contact with the Family Crisis Center. The victim refused shelter, but did obtain a protective order and the officers obtained an arrest warrant for the husband. At about 7pm the victim called the police to advise that her husband was in the area of the house. Officers located and arrested him on the warrant. He was also served a copy of the protection order and released to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville..

April 15th:

3100 block of Arundel Road: Vehicle impound – 12pm. Officers impounded a boat and trailer parked on a city street in violation of city ordinance.

3100 block of Queens Chapel Road (Family Dollar): Theft – 6pm. The store clerk told officers that two black males came into the store, selected several food items and left the store without paying for the items. An employee followed the suspects and spotted a Brentwood Police Officer in the area. The employee told the officers about the theft and when the two suspects saw the officer they dropped most of the stolen goods and fled the area. 

2200 block of Varnum Street (Kaywood Liquors): Theft – 12:20pm. The store owner told officers that a new employee told him that her cash drawer was shout $518 due to lottery tickets she purchased and could not pay for. The owner said that he would give her a few days to pay the money before seeking charges.

2300 block of Varnum Street (7-11): Disorderly – 9:05pm. Officers contacted a man who was caught stealing sugar packets from the store. The officers escorted the man from the store whereupon he became loud and disorderly. He was charged with disorderly conduct and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville.

4200 block of 28th Street: Possession of a CDS with intent to distribute – 11:10pm. Officers responded to the intersection of 28th and Upshur Streets for the report of a vehicle blocking the intersection. Officers located the vehicle and as they approached to speak with the driver they smelled the strong odor of PCP coming from his person. He was ordered out of the vehicle but refused putting the vehicle in gear and attempting to drive away. For their safety officers deployed a Taser to get the man under control and under arrest. A search incident to arrest revealed that the man was in possession of eight separate baggies containing powder cocaine and over $1,600 in cash. He was charged with possession with intent to distribute a CDS and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville.

April 14th:

2500 block of Allison Street: Domestic assault – The victim told officers that on the night of April 13th she went to the hospital for treatment of injuries she sustained as the result of a physical altercation with her boyfriend. She said that when she was released from the hospital and returned home she was again assaulted by her boyfriend. Officers observed that she had visible bruises and lacerations as a result. The boyfriend was arrested, charged with domestic assault and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville.

3300 block of Buchanan Street: Theft from auto – 7:50am. The owner of a 2009 Toyota told officers that she came out to her vehicle and discovered that someone had broken out the rear passenger side window. She said that her personal check book along with an envelope containing $800 that she left in the back seat had been stolen. Officers processed the vehicle for latent evidence with negative results.

3400 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Criminal citation – 1:15pm. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for drinking in public.

3100 block of Chillum Road (7-11): Disorderly – 1:55pm. The store manager told officers that a customer got upset at a clerk because she had insufficient funds for a purchase. The woman ripped open a bag of chips and threw a bottle of water over the register counter before leaving the store. The woman was described as a black female in her early to mid-twenties wearing a security guard uniform. She fled the area in a blue SUV, possibly a Ford Explorer. A canvas of the area failed to locate the woman or her vehicle.   

April 13th:

2300 block of Varnum Street: EPS – 2:30pm. Officers saw a man walking in and out of the roadway disrupting traffic and wearing only his underwear. From previous encounters the officers knew the man was schizophrenic and bipolar. He was taken into custody and transported by EMS to Prince George’s Hospital for an emergency psychiatric evaluation.

3800 block of 35th Street: Burglary – 3:50pm. The resident told officers that when he returned home he noticed that someone had kicked in his front door. When he went inside he saw that the interior had been ransacked and the rear door was open. The officers assisted the victim with going through the residence and attempting to sort through the damage. He said that that nothing immediately stood out as being missing. Witnesses reported seeing a black male leaving the area about the time the burglary happened but could not put him at the house.

3100 block of Queens Chapel Road: Disorderly – 9:30pm. Officers stopped to speak with a man who was intoxicated, acting in a disorderly manner and causing a public disturbance. When they tried to talk with him he began yelling profanities at them and passersby. After repeated attempts to get him to calm down, he was issued a citation for disorderly conduct. He proceeded to tear up the citation and yelled more profanities at the officers. He was arrested, charged with disorderly conduct and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville.

April 12th:

3200 block of Shepherd Street: Vehicle impound – 9am. Officers impounded a 2002 BMW for displaying a fake rear tag. The correct tag was on the front but the car’s overall registration was suspended and there was an MSP pick-up order for the tags.

April 11th:

3200 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Warrant service – 9:45am. A juvenile came in to the police station to surrender on an open warrant. Officers confirmed the warrant for violation of probation related to a theft charge. He was transported to juvenile services in Upper Marlboro for processing. After processing he was delivered to the custody of the staff at the Cheltenham youth facility.

4500 block of 31st Street: Fraud – 11am. The victim told officers that she bought 5 tickets to Cancun Mexico from Lucero Travel. She said she put a cash deposit down and then agreed to have her credit card charged for the remaining balance. Her credit card was charged several hundred dollars more than the agreed upon price and when she contacted American Airlines she learned that the tickets had been canceled.

Bunker Hill Road and 34th Street: M/V collision – 4:15pm. Officers investigating a collision between a 2016 Hyundai and a 2012 Toyota learned that the driver of the Hyundai was pulling out of a parking space and struck the oncoming Toyota. There were no injuries and both vehicles were drivable after the collision.

2900 block of Allison Street: Property damage – 6pm. Officers investigating a possible vandalism to a 2013 Honda Accord determined that the damage was most likely caused by a rock kicked up by one of the lawn care company’s mowers. The victim is contacting apartment management and the lawn care company for resolution.

April 10th:

2900 block of Allison Street: Stolen vehicle (unfounded) – 9:20am. The owner of a 2005 Nissan Altima told officers that he came out for his car this morning and discovered it missing. Officers reported the vehicle as stolen but later learned that it had been towed by a private company for a parking violation.

3300 block of Shepherd Street: Missing person – 10:20pm. The mother of a 15 year old girl told officers that about 20 minutes prior her daughter left the house after the two had a verbal argument. The mom said her daughter may have gone back to a former residence in DC. Officers notified DC police and PGPD to be on the lookout for the girl. Her information was entered into NCIC missing persons files.

The following information  comes courtesy  of the  New Jersey Cybersecurity & Communications Integration Cell Public cell phone charging stations supplied with power cables or USB ports located in stores, airports, libraries, and schools may seem like a convenient way to charge your mobile devices on-the-go, but can you be sure that your device and data will be safe if you connect? These kiosks can contain concealed computers that attempt to extract data such as contact information, photos, and videos from connected devices, unbeknownst to the users. Additionally, malicious or compromised charging stations can expose devices to the risk of a malware infection. Even if the charging station isn’t malicious, the manufacturer or owner of the kiosk may require users to input their email addresses or phone numbers in order to charge their devices, potentially exposing them to unwanted marketing campaigns, spam emails, and scam calls. Police Report: May 8-11

Friday May 8th : 3400 block of 11 Newton Street : At about 2 pm officers responded for the report of a woman who had been assaulted by her boyfriend. The boyfriend allegedly punched the woman in the mouth and choked her. She told the officers that she did not want any police assistance and refused to tell the officers what had occurred. She was referred to the District Court Commissioner if she decided to press charges at a later time. Saturday May 9th : Nothing significant to report. Sunday May 10th : 4500 block of Eastern Avenue (BP station) : At about 11 am officers responded for the report of a stolen auto. The officers met with the victim/owner who told them that he left the keys to his 2002 Lincoln on the front seat when he went inside to pay for gas. When he came out of the store he saw his Lincoln being driven up Eastern Avenue towards Rhode Island Avenue by a black male (no further description). A check of the area for the stolen car proved negative and a lookout for it was gi
