Police Report: April 30 - May 6

The Mount Rainier Police Department’s weekly report is not intended to be a listing of every incident or call for service handled by the police department, but merely a general summary of incidents that may be of interest to the community. Some reports may be outside the date parameters due to extended investigations or other circumstances. Some cases are not included at all due to ongoing investigations.

May 6th:

4200 block of Kaywood Drive: Hit and run collision – 4:35pm. The owner of a 2002 Nissan Maxima told officers that he came out to his vehicle and discovered that the driver’s door had been sideswiped leaving a paint transfer and a dent in the door. The incident occurred sometime after he parked the vehicle on the 5th at about 6:30pm. No evidence or witnesses were identified.

3500 block of Otis Street: Missing person – 9:10pm. The mother of a 17 year old female told officers that she had not seen her daughter since about 10:30am on May 3rd. Mom went on to say that although she has not physically seen her daughter she has been in constant contact with her via text messages; however, she has been unable to convince her to return home. 

May 5th:

4200 block of Russell Avenue: Vehicle impound – 2:50pm. Officers impounded a 2007 Saturn for displaying tags that expired in January of this year. At about 9pm the owner of the vehicle came into the police station and provided proof of current registration. The tags and the vehicle were released to him.

3800 block of Buchanan Street: Sexual assault – 4pm. Officers took a report of an alleged sexual assault on a female juvenile that occurred back on April 30th. The victim was transported to the PGPD Sexual Assault Unit to be interviewed as part of a follow-up investigation.

May 4th:

3000 block of Queens Chapel Road: Death report – 6:45am. Officers were called to assist EMS with a deceased male. A 93 year old male was found unresponsive and was pronounced dead at about 6:45am. The State Medical Examiner responded to the scene, confirmed that the man died from natural causes and released the decedent’s remains to his family for final arrangements.

May 3rd:

3500 block of Otis Street: Vehicle impound – 3:30pm. Officers impounded a 1999 Mercury Grand Marquis that had not been moved for several weeks and was displaying tags that did belong to the vehicle.

May 2nd:

3500 block of Rhode Island Avenue: MIR – 9:25am. A Public Works employee was cutting grass when the trimmer/mower he was using kicked up a rock that shatters the rear passenger window of a 1999 Lexus. The owner of the vehicle was notified of the damage by phone.

3300 block of Chauncey Place: Burglary – 10:45am. The resident told officers that yesterday evening (May 1st) he went to use his iPad and discovered it missing. He checked the apartment and discovered additional items of family property and cash had been stolen. While checking the apartment he realized that he left a window to his apartment open while the family was away, and that he believes it was during this time that someone got into the apartment through the window and stole his property.

4300 block of Kaywood Drive: Vehicle impound – 11:15am. Officers impounded a 1997 BMW that was displaying a fraudulent expiration date sticker. The vehicle’s registration had expired back in 2015.

3400 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Criminal citation – 5:15pm. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for possession of an open container of alcohol.

4700 block of 27th Street: Criminal citation – 8:50pm. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for drinking in public.

May 1st:

4300 block of Kaywood Drive: Vehicle impound – 8:05am. Officers impounded a 2013 Kia that was unregistered and displaying expired tags.

4200 block of Eastern Avenue: Emergency petition – 1:55am. Officers responded for the report of an unwanted guest. When they arrived they encountered a man who was bipolar and making unwanted sexual overtures to the female resident. EMS responded and transported the man to Washington Adventist Hospital for an emergency psychiatric evaluation.

April 30th:

4100 block of 31st Street: Criminal citation – 1am. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for possession of an open container of alcohol in a motor vehicle.

4100 block of 31st Street: Emergency petition – 4:35pm. Officers responded for the report of a 15 year old with a knife. Once at the location the mother told the officers that her daughter was having another emotional episode. Officers took control of the girl and transported her girl to Children’s Hospital for an emergency psychiatric evaluation.

The following information  comes courtesy  of the  New Jersey Cybersecurity & Communications Integration Cell Public cell phone charging stations supplied with power cables or USB ports located in stores, airports, libraries, and schools may seem like a convenient way to charge your mobile devices on-the-go, but can you be sure that your device and data will be safe if you connect? These kiosks can contain concealed computers that attempt to extract data such as contact information, photos, and videos from connected devices, unbeknownst to the users. Additionally, malicious or compromised charging stations can expose devices to the risk of a malware infection. Even if the charging station isn’t malicious, the manufacturer or owner of the kiosk may require users to input their email addresses or phone numbers in order to charge their devices, potentially exposing them to unwanted marketing campaigns, spam emails, and scam calls. Police Report: May 8-11

Friday May 8th : 3400 block of 11 Newton Street : At about 2 pm officers responded for the report of a woman who had been assaulted by her boyfriend. The boyfriend allegedly punched the woman in the mouth and choked her. She told the officers that she did not want any police assistance and refused to tell the officers what had occurred. She was referred to the District Court Commissioner if she decided to press charges at a later time. Saturday May 9th : Nothing significant to report. Sunday May 10th : 4500 block of Eastern Avenue (BP station) : At about 11 am officers responded for the report of a stolen auto. The officers met with the victim/owner who told them that he left the keys to his 2002 Lincoln on the front seat when he went inside to pay for gas. When he came out of the store he saw his Lincoln being driven up Eastern Avenue towards Rhode Island Avenue by a black male (no further description). A check of the area for the stolen car proved negative and a lookout for it was gi
