On Wednesday, January 9, 2008, at approximately 8:50 a.m., Officer Kirk D. Banton of the Mount Rainier Police Department was involved in a traffic accident that resulted in two fatalities. At the time of the accident, Officer Banton was on duty and driving his marked police vehicle to a scheduled court appearance in Upper Marlboro. Officer Banton was traveling south on Maryland Route 202 towards its intersection with Technology Way. As Officer Banton neared the intersection, the light controlling traffic traveling in his direction remained green. As Officer Banton entered the intersection, a 2004 Chrysler PT Cruiser turned left from northbound Route 202 into his path. Officer Banton's efforts to avoid a collision were unsuccessful. Emergency personnel responded to the scene, and both occupants of the PT cruiser were transported to Prince George's Hospital Center where they were pronounced dead a short time later.
