January 1, 2009:

3300 block of Shepherd Street: At about 2 am officers responded for the report of a hit and run accident. The victim/owner told the officers that she was sitting in her parked car waiting for a friend. She said that another car travelling at a high rate of speed struck her car and continued on its way without stopping. The victim/owner could not provide a description of the striking vehicle. The victim’s vehicle was drivable and sustained only minor damage.

3300 block of Chillum Road: At about 2:25 am officers investigated a hit and run motor vehicle collision. The victim told the officers that he was driving east on Chillum Road when another vehicle pulled out into his path from the parking lot of the 7-11 and collided with his car. The striking vehicle then drove around victim’s vehicle and fled the area west on Chillum Road onto Queens Chapel Road and disappeared. The victim could not provide any information about the striking vehicle. The victim’s vehicle was drivable and sustained only minor damage.

3200 block of Queenstown Drive: At about 4 am officers responded for the report of a fight between two men. When the officers arrived they observed the two men engaged in a violent physical altercation. The officers immediately moved to separate the two. One of the combatants complied with the officers’ requests to calm down, the other did not. That individual refused to cooperate with the officers and began screaming at them to shoot him and that he wanted to die. He also told the officers that he was under the influence of both crack cocaine and heroin. The officers moved to take him into custody for an emergency psychological evaluation and he became more violent and resisted the arrest. The officers were forced to deploy a Department issued Taser weapon to get him under control. Once the Taser took effect a family member assisted the officers with putting the man in handcuffs. Fire/Rescue personnel responded and transported the man to Washington Adventist Hospital for medical treatment and psychological evaluation.

The victim told the officers that she was approached by three black males; all dressed in black with black hoodie sweatshirts. One of the males brandished a black colored handgun whereupon the victim dropped her purse and backed away. The three males grabbed the purse and fled on foot in an unknown direction. Later in the evening the victim’s purse was found, however the cash she was carrying at the time of the crime had been stolen.

Crime Prevention Tip: Car Alarms

I received this earlier today courtesy of CPL Jim Flynn of the Bladensburg Police Department: For those of you who have a vehicle that has a remote entry device, you may also have a handy burglar/emergency alarm that you probably don’t think about. Most of these remote entry devices have a panic button that activates your vehicle’s security alarm system. Test it. It will activate from almost anywhere inside your house and will keep honking and flashing the lights until either your battery runs down or until you reset it with the button on the remote entry fob. It works if your vehicle is parked in your driveway or garage. So, the next time you come home for the night and start to put your keys away think of this: Put your car keys beside your bed when you retire for the night. If you hear a noise outside your home or someone tries to get in your house, just press the panic button for your car. If your car alarm goes off when someone is trying to break into your house, within a few se...
