Police Report: August 30 - September 5

The Mount Rainier Police Department’s weekly report is not intended to be a listing of every incident or call for service handled by the police department, but merely a general summary of incidents that may be of interest to the community. Some reports may be outside the date parameters due to extended investigations or other circumstances. Some cases are not included at all due to ongoing investigations.

September 5th:

4200 block of 30th Street: Warrant service – 2:25am. Officers stopped a 2006 Honda after learning that the registered owner had an open arrest warrant. Further investigation revealed that the warrant was still active out of Takoma Park for failing to appear in court (FTA) on a charge of driving without a license. He was arrested and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville.

September 4th:

3300 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Criminal citation – 2:50am. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for possession of an open container of an alcoholic beverage in a public place.

3800 block of 34th Street: Theft – 12:35am. The store clerk told officers that two men came into the store and took a case of Dove soap and a case of feminine products and left the store without paying for them. Officers will follow-up with the store owner in the morning to review the video surveillance recordings and try to identify the thieves.

4500 block of Eastern Avenue (BP station): Stolen vehicle – 6:50am. The owner of a 2012 Lexus told officers that she left her vehicle unlocked and running when she went inside the station to make a purchase. When she returned to her vehicle she saw it being driven away down Varnum Street.

September 3rd:

3800 block of 33rd Street: Vehicle impound – 8:44am. Officers impounded a 2004 Subaru that was displaying tags that expired in June and had an MSP pick up order for the tags.

One Municipal Place: EPS (supplement) – 9am. On August 20th officers took a man into custody who was under the influence of a synthetic drug. He was transported to Washington Adventist Hospital for emergency treatment. On August 25th officers applied for an arrest warrant charging him with resisting arrest and disorderly conduct. Officers were notified this morning that the Commissioner issued a criminal summons charging the man with both crimes.

4300 block of 34th Street: Traffic – 11am. Officers stopped a 2004 GMC for a traffic violation. Further investigation revealed that the driver’s license was suspended. He was arrested, charged accordingly and remanded to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville.

3200 block of Otis Street: Theft from auto – 12:45pm. A woman came into the police station to report that a bag was stolen from inside her vehicle. She said that she parked the vehicle and left it unsecured for about 15 minutes with the bag on the front seat. When she returned the bag had been stolen.  

4000 block of 30th Street: Suspicious person – 9:35pm. Officers responded for the report of a suspicious person knocking on doors. The officers found the man who said that he was soliciting for PEPCO. He was advised of the City Code requiring him to have a permit and sent on his way.

3400 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Vehicle impound – 7:40pm. Officers impounded a 2002 Ford that was displaying tags that expired on August 31st and had an MSP pick up order for the tags that was issued May 10th.

2300 block of Varnum Street: EPS – 11:45pm. Officers encountered a suspicious man standing in the grass near a child’s playground. As they approached him they smelled a strong odor of PCP about his person and observed that he was acting erratically and had dilated pupils and slurred speech. EMS personnel responded and transported the man to Washington Adventist Hospital for emergency medical treatment. Officers seized a vial containing 1.21 ounces of PCP and the remaining 6.4g of a 10g package of Bizarro synthetic CDS from the man before he was transported to the hospital. Officers are in the process of obtaining charges against the man for possession of the drugs.

September 2nd:

Nothing significant to report.

September 1st:

3500 block Perry Street: Criminal citation – 9:30am. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for urinating in public.

3400 block of Newton Street: Theft – 2:30pm. Officers responded for the report of a suspicious individual described as a black male wearing all black clothing trespassing in back yards in the area of 33rd and Perry Streets. The area was checked with negative results. A short time later officers received an anonymous tip from a concerned citizen who observed a man fitting the description leave the back yard of a residence in the 3300 block of Otis Street with a red VIP model scooter. The witness said the suspect was last seen heading south on 34th Street towards Newton Street. Officers canvassed the area and observed the suspect pushing the scooter on Newton Street. The suspect made eye contact with the officers and walked away from the scooter. Officers detained the suspect until they were able to locate the scooter’s owner who verified that it had been stolen from his yard. The suspect was arrested, charged with theft and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville.

3200 block of Bunker Hill Road: Theft – 3:15pm. The property owner told officers that his property was in good condition when last he left it on August 18th. When he came to check the property today he noticed that 5-6 pieces of siding had been stolen from the exterior of the house.

3400 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Criminal citation – 3:05pm. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for possession of an open container of an alcoholic beverage in a public place.

August 31st:

3200 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Warrant service – 11:25pm. Officers patrolling with an automated license plate reader were alerted to a 2000 BMW with a suspended registration. Officers stopped the vehicle and confirmed the ALPR information. They also learned that the driver had an open arrest warrant through the Charles County Sheriff’s Office for failing to appear in court on a charge of theft over $100. He was arrested on the warrant and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville.

August 30th:

3100 block of Arundel Road: Criminal citation – 2:15am. Officers stopped a woman who was walking in the roadway without a shirt on. She was allegedly in the process of approaching some men and trying to purchase CDS. She became loud, combative and belligerent and gave the officers a false name. She was arrested and taken to DOC for processing. Once at DOC officers learned her real name and issued her two criminal citations for disorderly conduct and making a false statement to a police officer.

3300 block of Bunker Hill Road: Assault - 2:30am. Officers responded for the report of a man bleeding. The officers arrived with EMS personnel and found the man. While he was being treated for minor injuries he told officers that he was in a bathroom and a Hispanic male hit him in the head with a bottle. EMS transported him to a local hospital for treatment. A canvas of area revealed negative results for the suspect or where the crime occurred.

3700 block of 34th Street: Suspicious person – 4:30am. The owner of a 2002 Ford told officers that she saw a man standing near her vehicle. The vehicle’s alarm went off and the man got into a vehicle parked on Otis Street and left the area towards Eastern Avenue. There was no damage to the vehicle or any evidence of a crime, the reporting person wanted the event documented.

3200 block of Otis Street: Vandalism to auto – 9:20am. Officers on patrol discovered a 2005 Mazda with a broken passenger side rear door window. There were glass fragments on the ground by the vehicle’s door. All doors to the vehicle were still locked. The owner responded and confirmed that nothing had been stolen from inside the vehicle and the damage occurred sometime after 11pm last night.

One Municipal Place: Criminal citation – 5:40pm. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for urinating in public.

The following information  comes courtesy  of the  New Jersey Cybersecurity & Communications Integration Cell Public cell phone charging stations supplied with power cables or USB ports located in stores, airports, libraries, and schools may seem like a convenient way to charge your mobile devices on-the-go, but can you be sure that your device and data will be safe if you connect? These kiosks can contain concealed computers that attempt to extract data such as contact information, photos, and videos from connected devices, unbeknownst to the users. Additionally, malicious or compromised charging stations can expose devices to the risk of a malware infection. Police Report: May 8-11

Friday May 8th : 3400 block of 11 Newton Street : At about 2 pm officers responded for the report of a woman who had been assaulted by her boyfriend. The boyfriend allegedly punched the woman in the mouth and choked her. She told the officers that she did not want any police assistance and refused to tell the officers what had occurred. She was referred to the District Court Commissioner if she decided to press charges at a later time. Saturday May 9th : Nothing significant to report. Sunday May 10th : 4500 block of Eastern Avenue (BP station) : At about 11 am officers responded for the report of a stolen auto. The officers met with the victim/owner who told them that he left the keys to his 2002 Lincoln on the front seat when he went inside to pay for gas. When he came out of the store he saw his Lincoln being driven up Eastern Avenue towards Rhode Island Avenue by a black male (no further description). A check of the area for the stolen car proved negative and a lookout for it was gi
