Police Report: August 14-20

August 14th:

3400 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Motor vehicle collision – 5:05 am. Officer responded for the report of a single vehicle collision. Upon arrival they found a 1993 Lincoln Town car that had left the roadway and crashed into a tree in the median. The investigation revealed that the weather conditions and the vehicle’s speed were the main factors that caused the vehicle to crash.

2300 block of Varnum Street (7-11): Theft over $500 – 11:25 pm. Officers responded for the report of a theft of cigarettes. When the officers arrived they spoke with store employees and reviewed the surveillance camera footage. The officers learned that two black males in their late 30’s entered the store, went behind the counter, pulled out a plastic bag and filled it up with cigarettes.  The subjects then fled the store on foot. It is believed that they entered a vehicle parked on 22nd Street and fled the area.

August 15th:

4600 block of 29th Street: Vandalism to auto – 8:15 am. The owner of a 1991 Olds Cutlass reported that sometime prior to her call to police someone smashed out the front passenger door window. Nothing was stolen from inside the vehicle and no evidence was identified.

3400 block of Otis Street: Property damage – 8:50 am. During the previous night’s severe storms a City tree was uprooted and fell on an unoccupied 1995 Toyota Camry. Public Works employees responded and removed the tree.

4600 block of 29th Street: Stolen auto – 9:20 am. The owner of a 1990 Chevy truck reported that sometime between 10 pm on August 14th and the time of her call to police someone stole her truck.

2400 block of Arundel Road: Narcotics arrest – 11:30 am. Officers responded for the report of a domestic dispute. While interviewing the male half the officers asked him if he had a key to the apartment building’s secured front entry door. While suspect reached in his pocket for the key a Ziploc bag containing marijuana fell out of his pocket. The marijuana was seized and he was arrested and charged with CDS possession. He was delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville.

3000 block of Arundel Road: Stolen auto - 12:15 pm. The owner of a 1996 Jeep Cherokee reported that sometime between 10 pm on August 14th and 9:30 am this morning someone stole his vehicle.

3700 block of 35th Street: Stolen auto/recovered – 1:20 pm. The owner of a 1995 Acura Integra reported that sometime between 10 pm on August 14th and the time he called police someone stole his vehicle. The vehicle was later located by Code Enforcement officers in the alley to the rear of the 3400 block of Eastern Avenue. The owner responded and took possession of his vehicle.

August 16th:

3400 block of Eastern Avenue: Trespassing – 10:25 am. A Parking Enforcement Officer observed three individuals sitting on the front porch of an abandoned house. MRPD officers responded and stopped the three for field interview. All three were warned not to return to the property and sent on their way. 

3400 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Criminal citation – 3 pm. Officers issued a woman a criminal citation for drinking an alcoholic beverage in public.

3400 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Child custody dispute – 3:40 pm. The mother of a 2 year old child told officers that the child’s father picked up the boy on August 1st and told the mother that he’d bring him home in a few days. Instead of bringing the boy back he called the mother and told her he was filing for full custody and that she’d be receiving court papers in the mail. There was no current contact information for the father. The boy’s information was entered into NCIC missing persons files.

3400 block Rhode Island Avenue: Criminal citation – 7 pm. Officers issued a woman a criminal citation for drinking an alcoholic beverage in public.

3400 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Criminal citation – 9:20 pm. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for failure to obey a lawful order of a police officer.

August 17th:

Nothing significant to report.

August 18th:

3100 block of Queens Chapel Road: Residential armed robbery – 8:35 am. The male victim in this case told officers that a black male described as 6” tall with a slim build wearing a black hat, a gray t-shirt and black jeans was waiting for him in the hallway of his apartment building when he got home from work. The suspect forced the victim into his apartment at gunpoint and tied up the male victim and a female victim who was already inside the apartment. The suspect then ransacked the apartment allegedly looking for narcotics before leaving the apartment and making good his escape. PGPD robbery detectives responded to the scene to conduct a follow-up investigation.

2200 block of Varnum Street: Criminal citation – 11:55 am. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for drinking an alcoholic beverage in public.

3200 block of Perry Street: Criminal citation – 8:30 pm. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for drinking an alcoholic beverage in public.

2700 block of Upshur Street: Criminal citation – 11:50 pm. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for drinking an alcoholic beverage in public.

August 19th:

3100 block of Queens Chapel Road: Residential burglary – 1:35 pm. Officers responded to follow-up on the residential armed robbery that occurred yesterday.  When the officers arrived they were advised that the same residence had just been broken into. Officers canvassed the area and found a crow bar near a dumpster that may have been used to pry open the victim’s apartment door.  A PGPD forensics team was called to the residence to process the apartment for evidence.

3000 block of Bunker Hill Road: Residential burglary - 1:40 pm. The resident told officers that her neighbor observed three black males enter her residence through a rear door. The suspects were later seen exiting the residence through the front door and got into a small grey car and fled towards Eastern Avenue.  The resident told officers that several items of jewelry were stolen. Officers processed the residence for evidence.

4200 block of Russell Avenue: Stolen auto – 3:20 pm. The owner of a 2001 Saturn came into the police station to report his car stolen.

August 20th:

3400 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Criminal citation – 8:55 am. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for drinking an alcoholic beverage in public.

3300 block of Chauncey Place: Assault – 8:35 pm. Officers were called to investigate unknown trouble in the laundry area of the apartment building. When officers arrived they learned that a juvenile male had shot several washers and dryers with a BB gun. He also shot out the entire front entry door glass. One of the BBs struck a female juvenile above her left eye. As the suspect fled the area he pointed the BB gun at a second victim and threatened to shoot her if she told on him. Since both victims and several witnesses knew the suspect and where he lived it did not take long for officers to find and arrest him. He was charged with malicious destruction of property, two counts of assault and reckless endangerment. He was released to the custody of his Grandmother pending Juvenile Court action.

2900 block of Arundel Road: Citizen armed robbery – 11 pm. The victim in this case told officers that he was unloading groceries from his vehicle when he was accosted by a black male armed with a black handgun. The suspect stole the victim’s cell phone and a quantity of US currency before walking out to Arundel Road. The suspect met another black male who was apparently acting as a lookout during the robbery and the two fled the area on foot on 29th Street towards Webster. A search of the area for the two suspects proved negative. The victim met with PGPD detectives at their station and PGPD will handle the follow-up investigation.

Crime Prevention Tip: Car Alarms

I received this earlier today courtesy of CPL Jim Flynn of the Bladensburg Police Department: For those of you who have a vehicle that has a remote entry device, you may also have a handy burglar/emergency alarm that you probably don’t think about. Most of these remote entry devices have a panic button that activates your vehicle’s security alarm system. Test it. It will activate from almost anywhere inside your house and will keep honking and flashing the lights until either your battery runs down or until you reset it with the button on the remote entry fob. It works if your vehicle is parked in your driveway or garage. So, the next time you come home for the night and start to put your keys away think of this: Put your car keys beside your bed when you retire for the night.
