Police Report: January 29 - February 4

February 4th:

Queens Chapel Road and Buchanan Street: Vehicle impound – 7:30 pm. Officers impounded a 1978 Ford van after it was disabled following a motor vehicle collision.

February 3rd:

3100 block of Queens Chapel Road: Theft from auto – 5:10 pm. The owner of a 1996 Geo Prism reported that someone stole the rear tag off his vehicle sometime between this morning and the time he called police.

3200 block of Chillum Road: Criminal citation – 7:40 pm. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for trespassing. The man had been properly notified by Queenstown management that he was barred from the property.

2400 block of Chillum Road: Warrant service – 8:40 pm. Officers stopped a 2004 Nissan for a traffic violation. Further investigation revealed that the vehicle’s tags were suspended for emissions violations, the driver had a suspended DC learner’s permit and he also had two open arrest warrants through Prince George’s County for failing to appear in court on charges of driving without a license. He was arrested on the warrants, issued three traffic citations, and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville. His vehicle was impounded.

2900 block of Arundel Road: Citizen robbery – 8:45 pm. Officers on patrol were flagged down by a citizen who told then that he had just been robbed of his cell phone. The victim pointed out his assailant to the officers who was fleeing the area on foot. The officers managed to apprehend the suspect a short distance away. The victim positively identified him and the officers recovered the victim’s cell phone a few yards from where he was apprehended. He was transported to DOC in Hyattsville where he was charged accordingly and released to the custody of DOC.

3400 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Warrant service – 11:30 pm. Officers arrested a man for whom they had previously obtained an arrest warrant charging him with possession with intent to distribute a CDS.  The arrested was delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville after his arrest.

February 2nd:

Nothing significant to report.

February 1st:

3800 block of 34th Street: Warrant service – 12:35 am. Officers stopped a 1994 Ford for a traffic violation. Further in investigation revealed that a passenger in the vehicle had an open arrest warrant for failing to appear in court on a charge of driving without a license through the Harford County Sheriff’s Office. The man was arrested on the warrant and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville.

3400 block of Rhode Island Avenue: CDS arrest – 8:50 am. Officers responded for the report of a group of juveniles that had just committed multiple thefts. When the officers arrived they identified the group and attempted to stop and question them. The group fled from the officers in different directions and the officers were only able to stop and detain three of them. Further investigation revealed that two of the juveniles were in possession of crack cocaine. They were charged accordingly and released to their parents pending Juvenile Court adjudication. The third juvenile was charged with misdemeanor theft and released to the custody of his parents pending Juvenile Court.

3100 block of Queens Chapel Road: CDS arrest – 4:30 pm. Officers received a report of a man smoking CDS. When the officers arrived they located the man in question. Further investigation revealed that he was in possession of 18.6 grams of marijuana. He was arrested, charged with CDS possession and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville.

3400 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Residential burglary – 3 pm. The resident showed officers where someone broke into their apartment through a window, ransacked the apartment and stole two TVs and a quantity of US currency. The perpetrators fled out the back door of the apartment and made good their escape.

3100 block of Queens Chapel Road (Family Dollar): Misdemeanor theft – 6:15 pm. Two male juveniles entered the Family Dollar store, walked to the drink section and stole two bottles of soda. The two fled the area on foot and could not be identified or located.

January 31st:

4600 block of 27th Street: Vandalism to auto – 12:10 am. The owner of a 2009 Chevy Impala told officers she parked her vehicle in front of her building at about midnight. When she returned a few minutes later she observed that the driver’s side fender was pushed in.

4000 block of Shepherd Street: Warrant service – 12:30 am. Officers located and arrested a man on a warrant they had obtained earlier for possession of a CDS with intent to distribute. The arrestee was delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville without incident.

2400 block of Chillum Road: Traffic/Vehicle impound – 11:35 am. Officers stopped a 1999 Subaru for a traffic violation. Further investigation revealed that the driver’s license was suspended last August. He was issued two traffic citations and his vehicle was impounded for safekeeping.

3100 block of Queens Chapel Road: Miscellaneous incident – 2 pm. Officers were alerted to a child that had been left inside a vehicle parked outside the Advanced Auto Parts store. When the officers arrived they observed the child’s mother driving out of the parking lot. They stopped the vehicle and questioned the mother as to why the child was left alone in the car. She explained that she was only inside the store for a few minutes. Officers explained that she could face charges for leaving the child unattended but allowed her to leave with a warning not to leave her child unattended for any reason.

3700 block of Wells Avenue: Theft from auto – 3:30 pm. The owner of a 2008 Toyota Corolla reported that sometime between 6:30 am this morning and the time he called police someone stole both license plates off his vehicle.

2700 block of Webster Street: Found missing juvenile – 9:15 pm. Officers responded for the report of a fight in progress. When they arrived they discovered no evidence of a fight but stopped a 15 year old juvenile for a field interview. During the in interview the officers learned that he had been reported missing from an address in DC on January 28th. The officers transported the juvenile to his mother’s address in Mount Rainier and released him to her custody.

January 30th:

3700 block of 36th Street: Burglary – 6:25 pm. The resident/victim told officers that sometime between 7 am this morning and the time he called police someone kicked in the rear door to his house, ransacked it, and stole several items of his personal property. The house was processed for latent evidence with negative results.

4400 block of 29th Street: Missing person – 8:25 pm. The landlord of a 26 year old male reported that her tenant left for Florida at the end of December and has not returned. The man’s information was entered into NCIC missing persons files. No foul play is suspected.

January 29th:

4600 block of 25th Street: Domestic assault – 2am. Officers responded for the report of a physical domestic dispute. When they arrived they determined that the male half had assaulted his wife. The man was arrested, charged with domestic assault and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville.

3700 block of 36th Street: Missing person – 9am. Officers interviewed the mother of a 13 year old juvenile who said that she had an argument with her son about him coming home late. Several hours later he left the house without permission and had not been heard from since. Officers entered the child’s information into the MCIC missing persons files. At about 9:00pm officers received a return call from the mother who said that her son had returned home. Officers spoke with the child and learned that he was safe and had spent the time at a friend’s house. His information was removed from NCIC.

3100 block of Queens Chapel Road: Attempt stolen auto – 11:50 pm. The owner of a 2005 Dodge Neon reported that sometime between 7 pm and 11:40 on January 29th someone broke into his car and tried to steal it by damaging the ignition.

I received this earlier today courtesy of CPL Jim Flynn of the Bladensburg Police Department: For those of you who have a vehicle that has a remote entry device, you may also have a handy burglar/emergency alarm that you probably don’t think about. Most of these remote entry devices have a panic button that activates your vehicle’s security alarm system. Test it. It will activate from almost anywhere inside your house and will keep honking and flashing the lights until either your battery runs down or until you reset it with the button on the remote entry fob. It works if your vehicle is parked in your driveway or garage. So, the next time you come home for the night and start to put your keys away think of this: Put your car keys beside your bed when you retire for the night.
