Police Report: December 30 - January 5

January 5th:

Nothing significant to report.

January 4th:

4300 block of 28th Place: Vehicle impound – 8:45am. Officers impounded a 2009 Toyota Corolla for displaying registration plates that expired in January of 2012.

2700 block of Webster Street: Vehicle impound – 8:50am. Officers impounded a 1996 Acura for displaying registration plates that expired in April of 2012.

3800 block of 34th Street: Criminal citation – 9:55am. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for urinating in public.

3400 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Criminal citation – 8:45pm. Officers responded for the report of a disturbance inside a business. Further investigation revealed that a woman urinated on the floor of the business after a dispute over a purchase. The woman was removed from the business and issued a criminal citation for urinating in a public place. After the woman was released the officers received information from Communications that she had an open arrest warrant through the Prince George’s County Sheriff’s Office for destruction of property and theft. She was located at One Municipal Place, arrested on the warrants and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville.

January 3rd:

4200 block of 28th Street: Theft from auto – 7:50am. The owner of a 2002 Ford Expedition told officers that sometime between 10pm on January 2nd and 7:30 this morning someone broke into his vehicle and stole the stereo system from inside.

2800 block of Taylor Street: Theft from auto – 8:05am. The owner of a 2007 Chevy Suburban told officers that sometime between 9:30pm on January 2nd and the time he called police someone pried off one of the vehicle’s door handles to gain entry. Once inside the thieves rummaged through the vehicle and stole several miscellaneous items. It also appeared as if the suspects were going to try and remove the victim’s rims but could not find the tool to get the locking hubs off.

3700 block of Wells Avenue: Suspicious persons – 9:35pm. Officers on patrol observed two men loading property from a private residence into a pickup truck. Further investigation revealed that the residence was vacant and the owner was not present. The two men were removing miscellaneous metal objects from the property for recycling. The men were told to return the property they removed and leave the area. The incident was documented pending further investigation once the owner of the property is identified and interviewed.

4200 block of 29th Street: Vandalism to auto – 10am. The owner of a 2003 Chevy Impala told officers that sometime between 11pm on January 2nd and 5am this morning someone vandalized his vehicle.

January 2nd:

3700 block of 34th Street: Stolen auto – 7:15am. The owner of a 1993 Honda Civic told officers that sometime between 10pm on January 1st and 5am this morning someone stole his vehicle. There was no record of impound or repossession and no evidence was recovered.

3700 block of 34th Street: Theft from auto – 7:55am. The owner of a GMC Savanna van told officers that sometime between 12pm on January 1st and 7:30am this morning someone broke into his van through the passenger side door. Once inside the thieves stole the victim’s GPS unit and a saw.

3500 block of Newton Street: Recovered stolen auto – 9:15am. Officers on patrol stopped to investigate a suspicious vehicle. Further investigation revealed that the vehicle had been reported stolen from the 4000 block of 33rd Street back on December 30th. The vehicle had ignition damage and the radio had been stolen. It was impounded for safekeeping and the owner was notified of the recovery.

4600 block of 27th Street: MIR – 6:15pm. Officers from the Howard County Police Department requested MRPD’s assistance in locating a vehicle and its driver that were involved in a hit and run collision in their jurisdiction. Officers were able to locate the vehicle and driver in Mount Rainier and detain both until Howard County officers arrived to take them into custody.

January 1st, 2013:

Nothing significant to report.

December 31st:

3200 block of Queens Chapel Road: Attempt commercial burglary – 9:20pm. An employee of Little Caesar’s Pizza told officers that at about 9pm she noticed fresh pry marks on the front door. Those responsible did not gain entry into the store. No evidence was recovered.

December 30th:

3600 block of Eastern Avenue: Property damage – 3pm. The property owner told officers that his fence was damaged by his neighbor’s vehicle the day before. The neighbor has agreed to repair the damages.

4000 block of 33rd Street: Stolen auto – 3:20pm. The owner of a 1995 Mercury Grand Marquis told officers that sometime between 9pm on December 21st and 7pm on the 29th someone stole his vehicle.

There was no record of impound or repossession and no evidence was recovered.

Community Shredding Day

Please mark you calendars for Saturday July 18th, 2009 for community shredding day. Priority One Shredding of Bowie, Maryland will provide free personal shredding services and secure document destruction from 8 am until 11am at the Bunker Hill Fire Station. Priority One Shredding is a leading provider of personal and business secure document destruction. Residents are welcome to watch their documents being destroyed, and once the shredding process is completed, the remains are locked in the mobile destruction unit until the paper is recycled. Priority One will also provide residents with a variety of identity theft prevention information free of charge. If you miss the community shredding day on July 18th, be sure to bring your bulk documents to National Night Out. Priority One will be onsite from 6-9 pm providing shredding services to residents again, free of charge .

Parking Citation Collection Notices

As you read this entry, many of our residents may have received a collection notice regarding one or more unpaid parking citations. We have received at least a hundred telephone calls, and our Records staff is quite taxed sorting out those notices that were received in error, and those that are legitimate. Just a few notes of caution that I’d like to pass along to help make things easier for all concerned. First, no member of the police department staff will void, cancel or otherwise dispose of a valid collection notice. We are also not authorized to make any payment arrangements or reduce the amount owed to the City. The staff at City Hall is under the same constraints. Persons who receive a collection notice and have concerns that it was issued in error should call the police department during regular business hours and our staff will research the citation.
