Police Report: June 30 - July 6

The Mount Rainier Police Department’s weekly report is not intended to be a listing of every incident or call for service handled by the police department, but merely a general summary of incidents that may be of interest to the community. Some reports may be outside the date parameters due to extended investigations or other circumstances. Some cases are not included at all due to ongoing investigations.

July 6th:

3200 block of Otis Street: Theft – 1:30am. The resident told officers that sometime between 11:30pm on the 5th and the time she called police someone came onto her front porch and stole her bicycle.

The bike is described as a Giant brand mountain bike, gray in color with black fenders and a carrier rack.

July 5th:

3600 block of Rhode island Avenue: Animal complaint – 12:50am. Officers were flagged down by a citizen who reported a dog that had been struck by a vehicle. Officers located the dog that was still alive but suffering from significant wounds. They located a 24 hour emergency veterinarian in DC and transported the dog there for treatment. Officers were unable to locate the dog’s owner so they posted its description on the local Yahoo list serve in hopes that the owner will come forward. The dog is described as small/medium size, possibly a Pomeranian.

3300 block of Chillum Road: Criminal citation – 2:35am. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for urinating in public.

4200 block of Rainier Avenue: Theft – 11:20am. The resident told officers that her roommate pointed out that the statue of the Virgin Mary that was in her back yard was missing. She said that she had not noticed the statue missing and that her roommate told her it has been gone since before June. She said that she believes someone may have taken the statue for safe keeping, and she has posted flyers around the neighborhood in hopes that the statue is returned. The statue is 4’ tall, made of concrete and is enclosed in a wooden shrine.

3700 block of 35th Street: Criminal citation – 1:40pm. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for drinking in public.

3200 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Criminal citation – 2:10pm. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for drinking in public.

Alley 19 between 35 and 36th Streets: Warrant service – 3pm. Officers stopped a man to issue him a criminal citation for drinking in public. Further investigation revealed that a man accompanying him had an open arrest warrant through Prince George’s County for failing to appear in court on charges of CDS possession. He was arrested on the warrant and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville. The man drinking the alcoholic beverage was issued a criminal citation for the violation and sent on his way.

July 4th:

2400 block of Chillum Road: Traffic – 5am. Officers stopped a 2000 Ford Expedition for a traffic violation. Further investigation revealed that the driver did not have a license. He was issued several traffic citations and his vehicle was impounded.

3400 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Warrant service – 12:30pm. Officers on patrol came upon a man known to have an open arrest warrant. The warrant, charging him with trespassing and failure to obey a lawful order, was confirmed and he was arrested and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville.

3200 block of Queens Chapel Road: Traffic – 7:15pm. Officers stopped a 2001 Chevy Impala for a traffic violation. Further investigation revealed that the vehicle’s registration was suspended and the driver did not have a valid driver’s license. The driver was issued several traffic citations and the vehicle impounded.

2310 Varnum Street (7-11): Shoplifting – 8:55am. The store manager told officers that a man came into the store, took three cans of lighter fluid and left the store without paying for them. The suspect was described as a black male with long dreads; 17-21 years of age; 5’6” tall; 160 lbs; wearing a white t-shirt and dark shorts. Officers searched the area for the suspect with negative results.

July 3rd:

2714 Webster Street: Emergency petition – 12:50am. Officers responded for the report of a naked man lying in the street. The officers located the man and discovered him in a very violent state. Fire/rescue personnel responded to the scene to assist the officers in getting the man under control. Officers were eventually forced to deploy a Taser weapon to get the man under sufficient control to enable fire/rescue to transport him to the hospital. Once at the hospital medical personnel had to sedate and shackle him in order to begin medical treatment. While searching the man for his identification the officers found a synthetic marijuana/spice compound called Bizzaro Kush in his pocket. Officers could not identify the man and he was released to medical personnel as a John Doe.

4300 block of 28th Place: Vandalism to auto – 12:20pm. The owner of a 2013 Jeep told officers that sometime between 9pm on the 2nd and the time he called police someone vandalized his vehicle by scratching the rear passenger side door. No witnesses/evidence could be identified.

4400 block of 28th Place: Criminal citation – 8:15pm. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for drinking in public.

3200 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Theft from auto – 10:50pm. Officers met with the victim who said that she left her purse and cell phone inside her vehicle when she went inside Party Time to make a purchase. She left her vehicle unlocked and when she returned she discovered the purse and phone had been stolen.

July 2nd:

3600 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Criminal citation (x2) – 8:15am. Officers issued each of two men a criminal citation for drinking in public.

3400 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Criminal citation – 8:55am. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for drinking in public.

4600 block of 27th Street: MIR – 8:20pm. Officers responded for the report of a man with a gun. When the officers arrived they spoke with the complainant who said that a man pointed a gun at him while he was speaking with a group of friends. The complainant said that his assailant appeared to be under the influence of PCP and fled into an apartment. Officers were unable to locate the suspect at the apartment or anywhere nearby. The complainant was advised of the fact and left the area.

3700 block of 34th Street: Emergency petition – 8:25pm. Officers responding to a separate call for service found a female walking in the road dressed down to her underwear and shouting. Officers approached the woman and smelled the odor of PCP about her person. When asked if she had been smoking PCP she said that she had smoked it and marijuana earlier in the evening. The woman was taken into custody and transported to Washington Adventist hospital where she was released to medical personnel for treatment.

3700 block of 36th Street: House fire (fatality) – 10:30pm. MRPD officers responded for the report of a house fire. Once on the scene the officers discovered that the fire had started over an hour before they were notified of the event. Fire/rescue personnel had already extinguished the blaze and discovered that the 70 year old resident who lived on the third floor had suffered fatal burns. Fire investigators did not immediately identify the cause of the fire only that it started in the attic where the deceased resided. The State Medical Examiner responded and ordered the deceased’s remains taken to Baltimore for a post mortem examination. PGPD homicide detectives and forensic technicians also responded to investigate the death. Two additional residents of the home escaped the fire without injury.

July 1st:

4100 block of 32nd Street: Burglary – 10:05pm. The resident/victim told officers that sometime prior to her call to police a known suspect broke into her bedroom by breaking the outside window lock. Once inside the suspect stole several items of her personal property before fleeing the house. The suspect is a 17 year old juvenile and the victim’s former boyfriend. The boyfriend was seen leaving the premises by the victim as she returned home. The victim, also a juvenile, and her mother were advised of the procedure for obtaining a protective order against the suspect from the District Court Commissioner. Officers canvassed the neighborhood for the suspect with negative results.

June 30th:

3000 block of Queens Chapel Road: Missing person – 6:15pm. Officers learned that a 93 year old male suffering from Alzheimer’s was last seen at about 4:00pm while taking out the trash from his residence at Rainier Manor. With the assistance of officers from PGPD and Hyattsville City Police an extensive canvass of the area was conducted. After several hours officers were notified that Hyattsville City Police received a call for a man fitting the missing person’s description wondering around the area of 39th and Jefferson Streets. Officers shifted their canvass to that area and a short time later located the man in the 4000 block of Gallatin Street. He was examined by fire/rescue personnel and determined to be in good spirits and in good physical condition. He was then returned home. One MRPD officer remarked that the man was in better shape than the medics who examined him!

3200 block of Otis Street: Hit and run collision – 9:35. Officers investigated a hit and run collision and determined that an unknown vehicle failed to remain at the scene after striking two parked cars. There was no suspect vehicle description or further evidence found at the scene.

I received this earlier today courtesy of CPL Jim Flynn of the Bladensburg Police Department: For those of you who have a vehicle that has a remote entry device, you may also have a handy burglar/emergency alarm that you probably don’t think about. Most of these remote entry devices have a panic button that activates your vehicle’s security alarm system. Test it. It will activate from almost anywhere inside your house and will keep honking and flashing the lights until either your battery runs down or until you reset it with the button on the remote entry fob. It works if your vehicle is parked in your driveway or garage.
