Police Report: October 27 - November 2

The Mount Rainier Police Department’s weekly report is not intended to be a listing of every incident or call for service handled by the police department, but merely a general summary of incidents that may be of interest to the community. Some reports may be outside the date parameters due to extended investigations or other circumstances. Some cases are not included at all due to ongoing investigations.

November 2nd:

One Municipal Place: Disorderly conduct – 8:10am. Officers stopped a man to issue him a criminal citation for drinking in public. During the encounter the man became increasingly hostile and disorderly. Repeated attempts to get the man to calm down were unsuccessful and he was eventually arrested for disorderly conduct and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville.

3700 block of 36th Street: MIR – 3:30pm. Officers on patrol observed an open window at a vacant house. Officers checked the house and although they did not find anyone inside there was evidence that someone had been squatting there recently. Officers contacted Code Enforcement and Public Works to have the house boarded up and secured.

3800 block of 34th Street: Commercial armed robbery (update). Officers were advised by PGPD detectives that they identified and formally charged a 15 year old juvenile with the armed robbery of the Mount Rainier Dollar Mart that occurred back on July 8th. The juvenile is presently in the custody of Juvenile Services at the Cheltenham youth facility on other charges.

November 1st:

3700 block of 37th Street: Burglary – 10:55am. Officers spoke with one of the residents who said that he came home to discover that his residence had been ransacked. After speaking with a second resident, officers learned that the break-in occurred sometime between 5:30am and 10:55am. The residents reported that only some costume jewelry had been taken. Evidence showed that those responsible gained entry by kicking in a basement door and they left through the kitchen door.

3500 block of 37th Street: Burglary – 2:45pm. The resident told officers that when she came home she noticed that there was a window screen lying in the yard. When she checked the house she discovered that someone had broken in by pushing in a basement air conditioner unit. Once inside the thieves stole a large screen TV, a game console and some shoes.

3400 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Assault – 7:55pm. An officer patrolling the area heard a woman screaming for help. The officer found the woman who was being physically assaulted by a man in front of 3409 Rhode Island Avenue. As the officer intervened the man repeatedly struck the officer in the head and face and a struggle ensued. After several minutes of fighting with the man additional officers arrived to get the suspect under control and under arrest. The suspect was found to be high on PCP and various other narcotics and was transported to a local hospital for medical treatment. Officers obtained a warrant for the suspect charging him with assault on the female victim, felony assault on a police officer, and resisting arrest. Once the suspect was discharged from the hospital he was transported to DOC in Hyattsville where he was processed and released to their custody. The officer was treated at a local hospital for his injuries and released.

October 31st:

4600 block of 25th Street: Burglary – 6:30pm. The resident told officers that sometime between 4:30 and 5:30pm today someone broke into his apartment. Those responsible cut the screens on several windows and broke the bedroom door lock. The resident said that he was in the process of moving out of the apartment and that nothing of value was stolen.

3300 block of Perry Street: Suspicious situation – 6:50pm. Officers spoke with a security representative from the GEICO Insurance Company who advised that he was looking into a report that a former policy holder threaten to go to the GEICO headquarters building in DC and “blow it up.”  Officers went to the suspect’s last known address in the City but were not able to locate her. She also did not answer a phone call to the last known number GEICO had on file.

October 30th:

2300 block of Varnum Street (7-11): Theft – 1:10am. A store employee told officers that a black male, 30-35 years of age, came into the store and stole several food items before fleeing on foot. A canvass of the area for the suspect proved negative.

4000 block of 31st Street: Attempt burglary – 7:30am. Officers spoke with witnesses who said that they saw two individuals trying to pry open the front door of a private residence. When the suspects saw the witnesses on the phone notifying police they fled the area towards Perry Street then on towards Eastern Avenue. Officers canvassed the area for the suspects with negative results. There was no damage to the front door and noting was reported stolen.

4500 block of 31st Street: Found property – 12pm. A citizen found a business portfolio and turned it into police. Officers were able to identify the owner and return the portfolio to him.

3800 block of 35th Street: Gambling – 2:45pm. Officers observed four individuals gambling and loitering in a posted no loitering area. When the officers approached the four they began to flee on foot while throwing dice and open alcoholic beverages in the bushes. All suspects were apprehended and issued citations for failure to comply with a lawful order of a police officer and possession of open alcoholic beverages. One suspect, a juvenile, was transported to the station, charged with gambling and possession of alcohol and released to his Mother.

October 29th:

4500 block of 32nd Street: Stolen auto – 9:15pm. The owner of a 2003 Chevy express van told officers that sometime between 11pm last night at the time he called police this morning someone stole his vehicle. No evidence was recovered at the scene and there were no witnesses. At about 3pm PGPD notified MRPD that the victim’s vehicle was recovered at an address in Landover. There were no arrests made, the vehicle was in drivable condition and the owner was notified of the recovery.

October 28th:

3200 block of Buchanan Street: Armed robbery – 6pm. The victims (2) told officers that they came to the area to buy a cell phone from an individual and that the sale was arranged through an ad on Craig’s list. When they arrived at the agreed upon meeting place they were approached by three black males in a white Toyota Highlander. The three were wearing all dark clothing and two of them were armed with handguns. The suspects ordered the victims out of their Honda Civic at gun point. The suspects proceeded to rob the victims of their vehicle, about $1,600 dollars in cash and several used cell phones. PGPD robbery detectives responded to the scene to process the area for evidence, interview the victims and take over the follow-up investigation. 

October 27th:

34th Street and Bunker Hill Road: DWI – 2am. Officers stopped a 2006 Honda Accord for failing to stop at a stop sign. Further investigation revealed that the driver was under the influence of alcohol. He refused to submit to sobriety testing. He was charged with DWI/DUI and other charges and released. His vehicle was impounded for safekeeping.

4000 block of 30th Street: MIR – 12:30pm. A resident told officers that sometime prior to his call to police someone damaged his garage door. Officers found no damage but did see that three screws were missing from a lock hasp.

I received this earlier today courtesy of CPL Jim Flynn of the Bladensburg Police Department: For those of you who have a vehicle that has a remote entry device, you may also have a handy burglar/emergency alarm that you probably don’t think about. Most of these remote entry devices have a panic button that activates your vehicle’s security alarm system. Test it. It will activate from almost anywhere inside your house and will keep honking and flashing the lights until either your battery runs down or until you reset it with the button on the remote entry fob. It works if your vehicle is parked in your driveway or garage.
