Police Report: December 14-20

The Mount Rainier Police Department’s weekly report is not intended to be a listing of every incident or call for service handled by the police department, but merely a general summary of incidents that may be of interest to the community. Some reports may be outside the date parameters due to extended investigations or other circumstances. Some cases are not included at all due to ongoing investigations.

December 20th:

3500 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Warrant service – 12:40am. Officers stopped a 2013 Chevy for a traffic violation. Further investigation revealed that the driver had an open arrest warrant through Prince George’s County for failing to appear in court on a charge of driving without a license. He was issued three traffic citations, arrested on the warrant and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville. The vehicle was released to a passenger with a valid license.

3200 block of Rhode Island Avenue: EPS – 1:05am. Officers patrolling the area came upon a man exhibiting signs of a person under the influence of alcohol or CDS. The man was unable to maintain his balance while walking, appeared to be talking to himself and twice stumbled into the street. He was taken into custody and transported to Washington Adventist Hospital for an emergency medical evaluation.

3400 block of Newton Street: EPS – 8:30pm. Officers responded to assist fire/rescue personnel with a woman who said she had been tortured and needed medical attention. Further investigation revealed that the woman had a prior history as a PCP user and schizophrenic and she was not on her medication at the time of call. She was transported by ambulance to Prince George’s Hospital for emergency medical and psychiatric evaluations.

3100 block of Queens Chapel Road: M/V collision – 9:45pm. Officers responded for the report of a single vehicle collision. They discovered a vehicle up against the curb with minor damage. Further investigation revealed that the driver’s license was suspended. He was issued several traffic citations and the vehicle was impounded.

December 19th:

3600 block of Perry Street: Traffic – 11:15pm. Officers stopped a 1999 Chevy for displaying suspended tags. Further investigation revealed that the driver did not have a valid license and was in possession of a fictitious out-of-state license. The fictitious license was confiscated, the driver was issued several traffic citations and the vehicle was impounded.

December 18th:

3400 block of Rhode Island Avenue: DWI – 1am. Officers investigating a single vehicle collision detected a strong odor of alcohol on the vehicle’s driver. She submitted to standard field sobriety testing and failed all tests. She was taken to the MSP barrack in College Park where she submitted to a breath test the results of which indicated she had a BAC of .13. She was charged with driving while intoxicated and other charges and released. Her vehicle, which was inoperable after the collision, was impounded.

3300 block of Buchanan Street: Domestic – 10:30pm. The victim told officers that her estranged husband came into her home yelling and cursing at her. She said that when she did not respond to him he became more upset and threw a television onto the floor. He also hit her during the altercation. When she told him she was calling the police he fled the apartment. The officers completed a domestic violence lethality assessment and the victim did not screen in. She was transported to the Commissioner’s office and obtained a protective order against the husband.

December 17th:

Nothing significant to report.

December 16th:

3300 block of Chillum Road: Traffic – 1:45am. Officers stopped a 2003 Honda for a traffic violation. Further investigation revealed that the driver did not have a license. He was issued several traffic citations and his vehicle was impounded.

3300 block of Chauncey Place: Vandalism to auto – 5pm. The owner of a 2001 Nissan told officers that sometime between 2pm and 4:30pm today someone smashed out the vehicle’s rear window. Nothing was taken from the vehicle and no witnesses or evidence was identified.

3500 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Civil citation – 9:25pm. Officers issued a woman a civil citation for possession of less than 10g of marijuana.

December 15th:

3000 block of Queens Chapel Road: Theft – 9:30am. The reporting person told officers that brought his wife’s purse home from the hospital after visiting her there on December 9th. He said that when he went back for the purse on the 12th he discovered a large quantity of cash missing from the purse. There were no signs of forced entry into the home and only the reporting person and his wife have keys to the apartment.

2200 block of Varnum Street (Family Dollar): Theft – 2:15pm. The store clerk told officers that a black male came into the store and asked to by a carton of cigarettes. She told him that the store didn’t sell cartons but could sell him individual packs to make a carton. She placed the cigarettes in a bag and set it on the sales counter. At that point the man grabbed the bag and fled out of the store, got into a late model Chevy and fled the area heading north bound on Varnum Street. The theft was captured on the store’s video surveillance system and the investigation is continuing.

2200 block of Varnum Street: Disorderly conduct – 9:35pm. Officers stopped a suspicious person for a field interview. During the interview the man, who was under the influence of alcohol, was advised to leave the area. He refused to leave and became disorderly and uncooperative. He was eventually arrested, charged with disorderly conduct and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville.

December 14th:

2700 block of Allison Street: Vehicle impound – 8:40am. Officers patrolling with an ALPR were alerted to a 2012 Nissan Altima that had a suspended registration and a pick up order for the tags. The tags were seized for return to MVA and the vehicle was impounded.

3200 block of Perry Street: Vehicle impound – 9:45am. Officers on patrol observed a 2007 Chrysler PT Cruiser with registration plates that expired last August. The vehicle was ticketed and impounded.

4300 block of Russell Avenue: Vandalism – 1:10pm. Maintenance personnel reported that sometime between 1pm on December 7th and the time they called police someone broke a laundry room window.

4500 block of 32nd Street: Theft – 2:20pm. The resident told officers that she saw a black male (15-25 YOA; wearing a black hat, a gray hoodie and a black coat) ride off with her child’s yellow/black GMC road bike.

2300 block of Varnum Street (7-11): Hit and run collision – 11pm. The owner of a 2005 Toyota Corolla and other witnesses told officers that the driver of a silver 4-door sedan backed out of a parking space and struck his vehicle. The striking vehicle then fled the scene.

Police Report: May 8-11

Friday May 8th : 3400 block of 11 Newton Street : At about 2 pm officers responded for the report of a woman who had been assaulted by her boyfriend. The boyfriend allegedly punched the woman in the mouth and choked her. She told the officers that she did not want any police assistance and refused to tell the officers what had occurred. She was referred to the District Court Commissioner if she decided to press charges at a later time. Saturday May 9th : Nothing significant to report. Sunday May 10th : 4500 block of Eastern Avenue (BP station) : At about 11 am officers responded for the report of a stolen auto. The officers met with the victim/owner who told them that he left the keys to his 2002 Lincoln on the front seat when he went inside to pay for gas. When he came out of the store he saw his Lincoln being driven up Eastern Avenue towards Rhode Island Avenue by a black male (no further description). A check of the area for the stolen car proved negative and a lookout for it was gi

Police Report: June 9-10

June 9th : 2500 block of Allison Street : At about 1 pm officers took a report of a citizen robbery . The victim told the officers and PGPD robbery detectives that she arrived to meet a client when she was approached by two black males. One of the men approached her from the front; the second came up behind her and placed her in a head lock. The second man demanded the keys to her gold 2005 Honda Accord (MD tags 9FA Y36). The victim complied and the two got into her car and fled the scene. The victim described her assailants as black males about 19-20 years of age. The first man was about 5’8” tall with shoulder length dreadlocks and was wearing a white t-shirt, long jean shorts, white socks and tennis shoes. The second man was about 5’10” tall, also had shoulder length dreadlocks and was wearing a white navy hat. Boston Marathon/West, Texas Spam Campaigns

There is a new spam campaign in circulation using the Boston Marathon bombings that occurred on April 15, 2013 as a lure. Users are sent an e-mail encouraging them to a watch a video of the explosion. When the user clicks on the enclosed link to watch the video malware is installed on the user’s computer.   The following URL patterns have been found in these e-mails: http://[IP-address]/boston.html   http://[IP-address]/news.html   When the user clicks on one of the links the Kehlios worm is installed on the user’s system which has the capacity to send spam; carry out Distributed Denial of Service Attacks; and steal online currency such as bitcoins. Most major anti-virus vendors have signatures for detecting this malware so users should keep their antivirus programs up-to-date.   In addition to the Boston Marathon spam campaign, a West, Texas plant explosion spam campaign has also sprung up.
