Police Report: January 4-10

The Mount Rainier Police Department’s weekly report is not intended to be a listing of every incident or call for service handled by the police department, but merely a general summary of incidents that may be of interest to the community. Some reports may be outside the date parameters due to extended investigations or other circumstances. Some cases are not included at all due to ongoing investigations.

 

January 10th:

 

4300 block of 28th Place: Vehicle impound – 10:15am. Officers patrolling with an automated license plate reader were alerted to a 2006 Lexus that had a suspended registration and a pick up order for the tags. The tags were seized for return to MVA and the vehicle was impounded.

 

3100 block of Queens Chapel Road: Warrant service – 3:45pm. Officers stopped to interview a suspicious person that had a strong odor of marijuana about his person. Further investigation revealed that he had an open arrest warrant through Prince George’s County for failing to appear in court on a theft charge. He was arrested on the warrant and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville.

 

January 9th:

 

4000 block of 31st Street: Traffic – 10am. Officers stopped a 1990 Mitsubishi Eclipse for a traffic violation. Further investigation revealed that the vehicle’s tags had expired in October of 2014 and it was uninsured. The driver was issued several traffic citations and the vehicle was impounded.

 

3100 block of Chillum Road: Traffic – 1:05pm. Officers stopped a 1998 Ford van for a traffic violation. Further investigation revealed that the driver did not have a license. He was issued the appropriate traffic citations and his vehicle was impounded.

 

4000 block of 34th Street: Vehicle impound – 4:45pm. Officers patrolling with an automated license plate reader were alerted to a 2004 Chevy truck that had a suspended registration and a pick up order for the tags. The tags were seized for return to MVA and the vehicle was impounded.

 

4500 block of 34th Street: Warrant service – 11”30pm. Officers stopped a 1996 Toyota Camry for a traffic violation. Further investigation revealed that the driver had an open arrest warrant through Prince George’s County for failing to appear in court on a charge of driving on a suspended license. He was issued several traffic citations, arrested on the warrant and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville. His vehicle was impounded.

 

January 8th:

 

Nothing significant to report.

 

January 7th:

 

4300 block of 31st Street: Attempt theft from auto – 4am. The owner of a 2014 Cadillac XTS told officers that he looked out of his window and saw a man removing the lug nuts from the wheels on his vehicle. When he yelled at the man he walked away, got into a waiting long bed white pick-up truck. The truck drove off towards Arundel Road and then unknown.

 

4200 block of 32nd Street: Recovered stolen auto – 10:15am. Officers on patrol stopped to check a 2002 Ford truck that was illegally parked. Further investigation revealed that the vehicle had been reported stolen from an address in DC. DC police were notified of the recovery and the vehicle was impounded for safekeeping.

 

3100 block of Queens Chapel Road: Hit and run M/V collision – 7:20pm. The owner of a 2007 Lexus told officers that sometime between 6pm and 7:15pm this evening an unidentified vehicle struck her Lexus and fled the scene. A large section of the rear driver’s side quarter panel was dented consistent with being struck by a second vehicle. No evidence/witnesses were identified.

4000 block of 34th Street: Theft – 7:25pm. The victim told officers that while working in the store her cell phone must have fallen out of her pocket somewhere in the store. She didn’t know where but when she searched the store she was unable to locate it. Suspecting that someone found and took it she contacted her phone carrier and was told via e-mail that her phone was last located in the 3500 block of East West Highway.

January 6th:

3800 block of 32nd Street: Theft – 7:30am. The homeowner told officers that sometime overnight someone stole several landscaping bricks out of his yard.

Russell Avenue and Taylor Street: M/V collision – 8:15am. The driver of a 2000 Toyota 4Runner lost control due to snow covered roads and struck a parked 2007 Chevy Malibu. The driver of a 2009 Lexus also lost control of her vehicle and collided with the Toyota. None of the drivers was injured.

28th and Taylor Streets: M/V collision – 9:30am. The driver of a 2007 Ford E350 truck was attempting to drive up a hill but due to slick roads could not make it and slid back down the hill and struck a parked 2014 Toyota Corolla. There were no injuries.

Queens Chapel Road and 30th Street: M/V collision – 1:15pm. The driver of a 2012 Kia Optima was traveling south bound on Queens Chapel Road when he lost control of the vehicle. The vehicle left the roadway and struck a pedestrian shoveling snow on the sidewalk. The pedestrian was transported to the hospital for treatment of his minor injuries. The Kia also struck a light pole before finally coming to rest. It was disabled from the collision and was impounded. The driver was not injured.

3500 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Assist PGPD – 7:40pm. Officers were notified by PGPD that detectives were following a vehicle wanted in connection with multiple armed robberies that had just occurred. As the vehicle entered Mount Rainier PGPD attempted to stop the vehicle. The vehicle refused to stop and fled into the District of Columbia. The suspects fled for several blocks where they crashed their vehicle and fled on foot. MRPD assisted with the apprehension of the suspects. The Prince Georges Country Police Department along with the Washington DC Police Department handled the incident.

January 5th:

4400 block of 31st Street: Theft – 2:05pm. The owner of a 2005 Kawasaki dirt bike told officers that he went into his back yard to get something and noticed that his dirt bike was missing. The victim stated that the last time he saw the bike was on December 29th at about 12:00pm.

3200 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Vehicle impound – 6:50pm. Officers on patrol observed a 2005 Dodge Caravan illegally parked. Further investigation revealed that the vehicle was unregistered and uninsured. The vehicle was issued several parking citations and impounded.

January 4th:

2700 block of Queens Chapel Road (Café Youth): Theft – 2:45pm. Officers spoke with the reporting person who said that she was mopping floors and noticed a set of footprints where she had just cleaned. She looked out the front door and noticed a black male in his late 30’s carrying a large plastic trash bag heading towards 30th Street. After a review of the security tapes the man used the bag to steal ten laptop computers and a tool kit. Officers obtained a copy of the security tape and are working with PGPD District I detectives to identify the thief.

3800 block of 34th Street: Vandalism to auto – 4:25pm. The owner of a 2000 Ford told officers that he came out to his vehicle to discover three of its four tires had been slashed. No suspects or motives could be identified at the time of the report.

3100 block of Windom Road: Vandalism – 10pm. The victim told officers that her ex-boyfriend showed up at her residence and knocked repeatedly at her door. When she did not answer the boyfriend threatened to break out all the windows of her residence and the windows of her vehicle. He finally left but not before breaking a living room window. The victim was advised of her options with a District Court Commissioner.

I received this earlier today courtesy of CPL Jim Flynn of the Bladensburg Police Department: For those of you who have a vehicle that has a remote entry device, you may also have a handy burglar/emergency alarm that you probably don’t think about. Most of these remote entry devices have a panic button that activates your vehicle’s security alarm system. Test it. It will activate from almost anywhere inside your house and will keep honking and flashing the lights until either your battery runs down or until you reset it with the button on the remote entry fob.
