The Mount Rainier Police Department’s weekly report is not intended to be a listing of every incident or call for service handled by the police department, but merely a general summary of incidents that may be of interest to the community. Some reports may be outside the date parameters due to extended investigations or other circumstances. Some cases are not included at all due to ongoing investigations.
January 31st:
3300 block of Chauncey Place: Vandalism – 1:05pm. The owner of a 2013 Chevy told officers that sometime overnight someone had keyed the entire length of the passenger side of his vehicle.
3100 block of Queens Chapel Road: Destruction of property – 9:55pm. The owner of a 2007 Volkswagen told officers that she looked out her kitchen window and saw a black female letting the air out her vehicle’s tires. She described the woman as being in her 20s wearing a black jacket with green sleeves. She shouted at the woman and the woman got into a black 4-door vehicle with DC tags and fled the area. The owner got the tag number of the suspect’s vehicle and it came back registered to an address in NE. The victim’s vehicle was left with two deflated tires on the driver’s side.
2300 block of Varnum Street (7-11): Theft – 11:50pm. The store clerk told officers that two black males came into the store and took a box of frozen chicken from the freezer section. The two then left the store without paying for the item, walking towards Arundel Road. Officers searched the area for the suspects with negative results.
January 30th:

January 28th:
2900 block of Allison Street: Emergency petition – 7:35pm. Officers spoke with a man who appeared to be very paranoid that someone was out to kill him. He was acting in a delusional manor and was not making sense. Fearing that the man was posing a danger to himself and others the officers took him into custody and transported him to a local hospital where he was released to medical personnel for an emergency psychiatric examination.
January 27th:
3000 block of Arundel Road: Warrant service – 4:35am. Officers responded for the report of a suspicious person in a hallway. Officers found the man in question and upon further investigation discovered he was an escapee from a halfway house and had an open arrest warrant through the US Marshal Service out of Arlington, VA. He was arrested on the warrant and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville.
2400 block of Chillum Road: Traffic – 1:45pm. Officers stopped a 2001 CMC truck for an equipment violation. Further investigation revealed that there was an MSP pick up order for the tags as the result of a previous equipment violation. The tags were seized for return to MVA and the driver was issued a citation for the equipment violation. The vehicle was removed by the driver.
3300 block of Otis Street: Assault – 6pm. Officers responded for the report of a fight. When the officers arrived they located several men in the backyard who had been drinking. One of the men was suffering from a cut to his forehead. The man was very uncooperative and said only that he was in an argument with someone he did not know and that the individual ran out of the yard prior to the officers’ arrival. He did not need any further police assistance. Fire/rescue personnel transported the man to a local hospital for treatment of the cut to his head.
January 26th:
4200 block of Rainier Avenue: MIR – 10:40am. Officers responded for the report of a burglary in progress. Witnesses told the officers that a man entered the house through the kitchen window. Further investigation revealed that the man was the homeowner’s son who was housesitting for his father while he was being treated at a medical facility. Officers couldn’t get in touch with the father to verify the story so a follow-up investigation is ongoing to ascertain if the son’s story is true.
January 25th:
4600 block of 27th Street: Recovered stolen vehicle – 9am. Officers stopped to check on an unattended 2005 Ford van. Further investigation revealed that the vehicle had been previously reported stolen from an address in DC. DC police and the owner were notified of the recovery and the vehicle was impounded for safekeeping.
3100 block of Chillum Road: Vandalism to auto – 10:15am. The owner of a 2007 VW Jetta told officers that sometime between 11:30pm on the 24th and 9:30am this morning someone cut the two left tires on her vehicle. No evidence/witnesses were identified.
4400 block of 28th Place: Hit and run collision – 1:35pm. The owner of a 2015 Jeep Cherokee told officers that she parked her vehicle this morning around 2am hours in good condition. She said that when she returned to her vehicle she saw where it had been struck by another vehicle that failed to remain at the scene.
3200 block of Queenstown Drive: Civil citation – 11pm. Officers issued a man a civil citation for loud music.
