Police Report: August 2-8

The Mount Rainier Police Department’s weekly report is not intended to be a listing of every incident or call for service handled by the police department, but merely a general summary of incidents that may be of interest to the community. Some reports may be outside the date parameters due to extended investigations or other circumstances. Some cases are not included at all due to ongoing investigations.

August 8th:

3400 block of Newton Street: Burglary – 5:55pm. Officers received a call from management that an apartment had been broken into and the door was off the hinges. When they arrived the officers checked the apartment and found that it had not been ransacked. When the resident returned home she checked the apartment and discovered that numerous items of her personal property had been stolen. She said that she suspects that a former boyfriend nay be responsible for the crime.

3300 block of Buchanan Street: Theft from auto – The owner of a 2011 Mercury reported that sometime between 7pm and 10pm someone entered his vehicle and stole a guitar. There were no signs of forced entry and nothing else reported missing.

August 7th:

3300 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Commercial burglary – 4:50am. Officers responded to Party Time Liquors for an alarm off. When they arrived they discovered a store front window broken and a liquor bottle on the ground. No entry could be made through the window. A store manager arrived and let the officers inside. While inside they observed a broken cash register monitor and a medium sized rock behind the counter. Officers reviewed the video surveillance data and identified the suspect as the same man who broke into a house in the 3600 block of Perry Street at about 2pm yesterday; and was transported to Providence Hospital for emergency medical treatment. Officers are in the process of obtaining an arrest warrant charging him with destruction of property and commercial burglary. At about 8:35am officers received a call for a man trespassing in an abandoned house on Rhode Island Avenue. They discovered it was the same man who broke into Party Time Liquors earlier in the day and a vacant house on Perry Street yesterday. Again, he was intoxicated and in need of immediate medical attention and was transported to a local hospital for treatment. A third warrant charging him with burglary was obtained and will be served when he is released from the hospital.

3700 block of 34th Street: Criminal citation – 7:40pm. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for drinking in public.

3800 block of 34th Street: Theft – 12pm. The victim told officers that she came into the store to use the ATM. While using the ATM she left her cell phone and credit card on the counter behind her. When she finished with the ATM she discovered her phone had been stolen. There were several other people in the store at the time but no suspects were identified.

4500 block of 34th Street: Traffic – 8:55pm. Officers stopped a 2007 Cadillac for a traffic violation. Further investigation revealed that the driver did not have a license. The vehicle was unregistered and had expired tags and no insurance. The driver was arrested and charged accordingly and the vehicle was impounded.

August 6th:

3400 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Criminal citation – 8:20am. Officers issued each of two men a criminal citation for possession of an open container of alcohol in public.

3400 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Criminal citation – 9am. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for loitering. He was in violation of a previously issued a loitering warning notice banning him from the area for 30days.

3400 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Criminal citation – 9:15am. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for loitering. He was in violation of a previously issued a loitering warning notice banning him from the area for 30days.

3400 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Disorderly conduct – 12:10pm. Officers stopped a man who was intoxicated, bothering passersby and in possession of an open container. This was the third time today that this subject was stopped by police for drinking and trespassing charges. When officers tried to issue him another criminal citation be began screaming profanity and causing a disturbance. He was arrested, charged with disorderly conduct and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville.

3800 block of 30th Street: Vehicle impound – 2:15pm. The Parking Enforcement Officer impounded a 2002 Ford Explorer that had been previously marked for 48-hour towing.

3600 block of Perry Street: Emergency petition – 1:55pm. Officers responded for the report of a man lying naked in the street. When they arrived they determined that he was under the influence of either alcohol or PCP. Witnesses stated that the man had just exited a vacant residence and fell to the ground where he was found. A search of the vacant residence revealed clothing and personal items belonging to him. He was transported by ambulance to Providence Hospital for an emergency medical treatment. Officers are in the process of obtaining an arrest warrant charging him with burglary.

4500 block of Russell Avenue: Warrant service – 7:20pm. Officers responded for the report of an unwanted guest. Further investigation revealed that the gust had an open arrest warrant through the Prince George’s County Sheriff’s Office for failing to appear in court on a disorderly conduct charge. She was arrested on the warrant and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville.

3300 block of Chauncey Place: Runaway juvenile – 9pm. The mother of a teenaged girl told officers that her daughter ran away from home after an argument. The mother added that her daughter took some clothing items with her and mentioned that she has runaway several times before with her boyfriend who lives in DC. The complainant was instructed to contact the police when she returns home.

August 5th:

3300 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Warrant service – 12:05am. Officers patrolling with an automated license plate reader received an alert on a vehicle with suspended registration. Officers stopped the vehicle and verified the ALPR information. They also learned that the driver did not have a license and had an open arrest warrant for failing to appear in court on a charge of driving without a license. He was arrested on the warrant and delivered to the custody of DOC in Upper Marlboro. The vehicle was impounded.

4300 block of Kaywood Drive: Theft from auto – 7:40am. The owner of a 2005 Scion told officers that she came out to her vehicle this morning and discovered the driver side door and rear hatch open. She also discovered that several dresses had been stolen from the vehicle. Officers could not determine how access was gained as there was no visible damage to any of the vehicles locking mechanisms.

One Municipal Place: Criminal citation – 8:45am. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for urinating in public.

3500 block of 37th Street: Tampering – 10:35am. The owner of a 2002 GMC told officers that he came out to his vehicle this morning and discovered damage to the driver’s side door lock and steering column. The vehicle was processed for latent prints with negative results.

One Municipal Place: Criminal citation (x2) – 4pm. Officers issued each of two men a criminal citation for drinking in public.

4500 block of 34th Street: M/V collision – 4:20pm. The driver of a 2005 Isuzu told officers that as he was driving towards the intersection of 34th Street and Arundel Road when his vehicle was struck in the rear by an unknown vehicle that drove away without stopping and fled the area to avoid identification.

3300 block of Otis Street: 1st degree assault (supplement) – 10pm. Officers obtained a criminal arrest warrant for an individual who committed a 1st degree assault on a female on August 1st.

2700 block of Webster Street: Missing person – 11:55pm. The parents of a male teenager reported their son missing after a family altercation. The juvenile is believed to be in the area and has been spotted by family, however, he runs away when they approach. He is considered non- critical and has no medical/psychological conditions nor is he on any medications. A canvas of the area and a search under apartment buildings revealed negative results. The juvenile’s information was entered into the NCIC missing persons file. 

August 4th:

Chillum Road and Queens Chapel Road: Traffic – 12:40am. Officers patrolling with a vehicle equipped with an automated license plate reader were alerted to a vehicle with suspended registration. The vehicle was stopped and the ALPR information verified. Upon further investigation it was learned that the driver only had a learners permit and was not accompanied by a licensed driver; and the vehicle had a pick-up order for the tags. The driver was charged accordingly, the tags were removed for return to MVA and the vehicle was impounded.

3100 block of Arundel Road: Stolen vehicle – 6:40am. The owner of a 2001 Dodge Caravan told officers that he parked and secured his vehicle on August 2nd at about 2:30pm. When he returned for the vehicle this morning he discovered it had been stolen.

August 3rd:

4600 block of 25th Street: Vehicle impound – 8:35am. The parking enforcement officer was discovered a vehicle displaying tags issued to another vehicle. The vehicle was cited accordingly, the tags were removed for return to MVA and the vehicle was impounded.

3200 block of Perry Street: MIR – 11:15pm. A resident reported that he discovered a dead cat that appeared to have been recently buried about a foot deep in the tree box area in front of his residence. It appeared as if something, probably another animal dug up the cat prior to the resident discovering it. The complainant wanted the incident documented as he found it strange and may be related to a separate incident that occurred a few days earlier.

August 2nd:

3200 block of Chillum Road: Warrant service – 4:15am. Officers stopped a 2003 Acura for a traffic violation. Further investigation revealed that the driver did not have a license; and, he had an open arrest warrant out of Montgomery County for failing to appear in court. He was arrested on the warrant and delivered to the custody of DOC in Upper Marlboro. The vehicle was impounded.

The following information  comes courtesy  of the  New Jersey Cybersecurity & Communications Integration Cell Public cell phone charging stations supplied with power cables or USB ports located in stores, airports, libraries, and schools may seem like a convenient way to charge your mobile devices on-the-go, but can you be sure that your device and data will be safe if you connect? These kiosks can contain concealed computers that attempt to extract data such as contact information, photos, and videos from connected devices, unbeknownst to the users. Additionally, malicious or compromised charging stations can expose devices to the risk of a malware infection. Police Report: May 8-11

Friday May 8th : 3400 block of 11 Newton Street : At about 2 pm officers responded for the report of a woman who had been assaulted by her boyfriend. The boyfriend allegedly punched the woman in the mouth and choked her. She told the officers that she did not want any police assistance and refused to tell the officers what had occurred. She was referred to the District Court Commissioner if she decided to press charges at a later time. Saturday May 9th : Nothing significant to report. Sunday May 10th : 4500 block of Eastern Avenue (BP station) : At about 11 am officers responded for the report of a stolen auto. The officers met with the victim/owner who told them that he left the keys to his 2002 Lincoln on the front seat when he went inside to pay for gas. When he came out of the store he saw his Lincoln being driven up Eastern Avenue towards Rhode Island Avenue by a black male (no further description). A check of the area for the stolen car proved negative and a lookout for it was gi
