Police Report: November 22-28

The Mount Rainier Police Department’s weekly report is not intended to be a listing of every incident or call for service handled by the police department, but merely a general summary of incidents that may be of interest to the community. Some reports may be outside the date parameters due to extended investigations or other circumstances. Some cases are not included at all due to ongoing investigations.

November 28th:

Nothing significant to report.

November 27th:

2900 block of Arundel Road: Robbery – 10:50am. The victim told officers that he saw a white female knocking on the secured door to his apartment building. The man opened the door for the woman and as he was walking back into his apartment a black male rushed in the door with the female. The man assaulted the victim by punching him repeatedly. The suspects forced their way into the victim’s apartment and the woman stole his flat screen TV from his bedroom and the man stole his cell phone from his pants pocket. Both suspects fled the building on foot. Officers located a witness who said that the suspects got into a dark colored sedan, possibly a Honda, and flee the area. PGPD detectives were called to the scene and are assisting in the investigation.

November 26th:

4500 block of 32nd Street: Burglary – 4:35am. Officers spoke with the two residents who said that a black male broke into their residence through a bedroom window and stole several items of personal property from inside. The suspect was confronted by one of the residents in the driveway as he fled the scene towards the Kaywood apartment complex. Officers searched the area and detained an individual matching the description given them by the residents. He was found in possession of property taken from the residence and the victims positively identified him. Officers searching the area found additional physical evidence linking the suspect to the crime scene. He was arrested, charged with residential burglary and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville.

4500 block of 32nd Street: Vehicle impound – 9:55am. Officers responded for the report of a vehicle abandoned in the roadway. They found a 2005 Chrysler unoccupied in the roadway with a damaged/missing rear wheel. The vehicle was impounded to clear the road and for safekeeping.

November 25th:

One Municipal Place: Disorderly conduct – 9:30am. Officers saw a woman drinking from an open alcoholic beverage container. When they approached to cite her for the violation she became very combative and began yelling obscenities that caused enough of a disturbance that additional officers had to be called to the scene. At one point the woman tried to spray the officers with the alcohol and she was told she was under arrest. She initially resisted but after a brief struggle she was taken into custody, charged with disorderly conduct and other charges and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville.

3200 block of Perry Street: Recovered stolen auto – 2:40pm. Officers were notified by the Charles County Sheriff’s Office that a 1998 Dodge truck reported stolen from the 3200 block of Perry Street on January 15, 2014 was recovered on Crain Highway in Waldorf. Attempts were made to locate the owner w/ negative results. No arrests were made in this case.

2200 block of Varnum Street (Family Dollar): Theft (shoplifting) – 9:10pm. The store clerk told officers that a black female wearing a tie died shirt came into the store, selected several items and walked out without paying for them.

3200 block of Queenstown Drive: Traffic – 8:25pm. Officers stopped a 2000 Honda for speeding. Further investigation revealed that the driver did not have a license. He was cited accordingly and his vehicle was impounded.

November 24th:

4000 block of 36th Street: Recovered stolen auto – 7:10pm. Officers canvassing the area for a reported sound of shots stopped to investigate a suspicious 2014 Ford truck. Their investigation revealed that the vehicle had been previously reported stolen from an address in DC back on November 12th. The vehicle was impounded for safekeeping and DC police were notified of the recovery.

4000 block of 36th Street: Recovered stolen auto – 7:10pm. Officers canvassing the area for a reported sound of shots stopped to investigate a suspicious 2003 Honda Odyssey. Their investigation revealed that the vehicle had been previously reported stolen from an address in Hyattsville back on August 14th. The vehicle was impounded for safekeeping and Hyattsville police were notified of the recovery.

2900 block of Allison Street: Runaway – 7:20pm. The father of a 16 year old teen told officers that he and his son had an argument, after which the boy walked away from home. He said that his son has done this in the past but always returned.

2900 block of Allison Street: Warrant service – 7:20pm. While taking the above runaway report officers learned that the father had an open arrest warrant charging him with 2nd degree assault. He was arrested on the warrant and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville.

November 23rd:

3000 block of Upshur Street: Vandalism to auto – 8:40am. The owner of a 1999 Ford F150 truck told officers that he came out to his vehicle this morning and discovered that the rear driver’s side window was broken. The owner said that he did not notice anything stolen from his truck.

Queens Chapel Road and Chillum Road: M/V collision – 4:40pm. Officers investigating the collision learned that a Honda Civic driving on Queens Chapel Road switched lanes and struck a Chevy Malibu. The Civic then rear ended a Mazda 3 before crossing the median and striking a Toyota Tundra in the oncoming lane. The driver of the Civic suffered minor injuries and was transported to a local hospital for treatment. No other injuries were reported and the Civic was impounded.

3000 block of Queens Chapel Road: Hit and run collision – 6:45pm. The driver of a 2005 Chrysler van told officers that while driving East on Queens Chapel Road he was rear ended twice by an unidentified second vehicle which fled the scene towards Chillum Road.

November 22nd:

3700 block of 35th Street: Domestic – 3am. The victim told officers that she had an active protection order against her husband who entered her residence without her consent. Officers verified the order and arrested the man who was still on the scene. He was charged with violating the court order and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville.

2300 block of Varnum Street (7-11): Trespassing – 3:20am. Officers arrested a man who had been previously banned from the store by management. He was charged with trespassing and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville.

4000 block of 36th Street: Theft from auto – 10:45am. The owner of a 2015 Jeep told officers that he came out to his vehicle this morning and found both doors open and several items of his personal property stolen from inside.

4600 block of 25th Street: Lost property – 1:30pm. The reporting person told officers that he mistakenly left his cell phone in a Lyft private car service vehicle. He contacted the driver who said that his next fare was a group of men who were dropped off in the 4600 block of 25th Street. When he pinged his phone it did come back to the area of an apartment building but not to a specific apartment. Officers attempted to ascertain an apartment number from a Lyft representative but company policy would not allow that information to be released.

I received this earlier today courtesy of CPL Jim Flynn of the Bladensburg Police Department: For those of you who have a vehicle that has a remote entry device, you may also have a handy burglar/emergency alarm that you probably don’t think about. Most of these remote entry devices have a panic button that activates your vehicle’s security alarm system. Test it. It will activate from almost anywhere inside your house and will keep honking and flashing the lights until either your battery runs down or until you reset it with the button on the remote entry fob. It works if your vehicle is parked in your driveway or garage. So, the next time you come home for the night and start to put your keys away think of this: Put your car keys beside your bed when you retire for the night.
