Police Report: February 28 - March 5

The Mount Rainier Police Department’s weekly report is not intended to be a listing of every incident or call for service handled by the police department, but merely a general summary of incidents that may be of interest to the community. Some reports may be outside the date parameters due to extended investigations or other circumstances. Some cases are not included at all due to ongoing investigations.

March 5th:

2700 block of Taylor Street: Vehicle impound – 9:45am. Officers impounded a 2007 Mazda for being unregistered and displaying an expired temporary registration tag.

3100 block of Queens Chapel Road: MIR – 12pm. A nine year old girl told officers that back on March 1st she asked an adult male student to help her with homework. She said that while helping her the man ran his hand down her side from her shoulder towards her waist. The girl then ran out of the room and told her mother about the incident. Officers conferred with PGPD detectives about the incident and determined that no charges were warranted at this time.

4500 block of 32nd Street: Domestic – 5:20pm. Officers responded for the report of a domestic dispute between a separated husband and wife. The husband, who no longer lives at the location, came over and changed the locks without telling the wife. After consulting with the on-duty State’s Attorney officers determined that the situation was a civil matter and advised both parties of their options. The husband left the residence but would not provide his wife a key to the new locks.

March 4th:

3000 block of Arundel Road: Vandalism to auto – 7:25pm. The owner of a 2007 Hyundai told officers that she discovered the car’s driver’s side mirror broken. She said that a neighbor saw someone by her vehicle about the time the mirror was broken. She believes it was a former boyfriend that broke the mirror.

March 3rd:

3800 block of 34th Street: Theft – 10:25am. Officers were stopped by the store owner and told that a man had just shoplifted several items from the store. The officers stopped the suspect a short distance away and detained him while a further investigation was conducted. Officers viewed the store’s video surveillance recording and confirmed that the suspect committed the theft as described by the store owner. The suspect was arrested, charged accordingly and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville.

3400 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Traffic – 11:10am. Officers stopped a 2004 Honda for a traffic violation. Further investigation revealed that the driver’s license was suspended. He was issued the appropriate traffic citations and released. His car was impounded.

3200 block of Varnum Street: MIR – 3:30pm. A woman’s husband told officers that she told him she wanted to kill herself. The woman admitted to making the statement. She voluntarily accepted EMS transportation to a local hospital for a psychiatric evaluation.

3400 block of Newton Street: Strong arm robbery – 7:40pm. The victim told officers that as she was entering her apartment building a man came up to her and forcibly stole the purse she was carrying over her shoulder. She ran after the suspect and saw him get into a dark color SUV and flee the area. She was only able to describe her assailant as a black male in his 20s. PGPD robbery detectives responded to interview the victim and begin a follow-up investigation.

March 2nd:

3200 block of Chillum Road: Criminal citation – 11am. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for urinating in public.

3600 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Criminal citation – 1:45pm. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for possessing an open container of an alcoholic beverage in a public place.

3400 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Criminal citation (x2) – 2:30pm. Officers issued each of two men a criminal citation for drinking in public.

3400 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Criminal citation – 6:05pm. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for urinating in public.

March 1st:

4500 block of 34th Street: Property damage – 1:55pm. Officers were notified that a vehicle accidentally struck the fence in the parking lot of Thomas Stone Elementary School parking lot and became stuck in the grass. Officers assisted in getting the vehicle free. Since the incident occurred on school property PGPD officers responded to handle the incident report.

3300 block of Buchanan Street: Fraud – 7pm. A man came into the police station to report that money was withdrawn from his bank account without his knowledge or consent. His financial institution is looking further into the transactions.

February 29th:

4100 block of 28th Street: Vandalism to auto – 7:25am. The owner of a 1996 Honda told officers that she came out this morning and discovered that someone had smashed out two of the car’s windows.

Queens Chapel Road and Chillum Road: M/V collision – 10:35pm. Officers investigating the collision determined that the driver of a 2007 Ford swerved to try and avoid hitting a car that was stopped in front of him. He was too late and struck the car which in turn struck a third car. The driver was issued the appropriate traffic citations. Two of the cars involved were disabled and had to be towed from the scene.

3200 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Warrant service – 11:40am. Officers stopped to speak with a man and during the conversation learned that he had an open arrest warrant through Prince George’s County for driving without a license. He was arrested on the warrant and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville.

3200 block of Chillum Road: Theft – 2:30pm. A woman told officers that she came home to her apartment and discovered that her cell phone, watch and cash were missing. There were no signs of forced entry into the apartment and no evidence of anything having been disturbed. The woman called her husband who said that he did not come home and remove any of the missing property from the apartment.

3600 block of Perry Street: Vandalism – 4:50pm. The resident told officers that he came home and discovered that someone had used a rake from the back yard to break out a small rear basement window. There were no signs that anyone entered the house and the audible residential alarm did not activate.

4200 block of 34th Street: Theft from auto – 4:15pm. The victim told officers that he was inside a residence doing work. When he went out to his work van he discovered that someone had broken into the van and stole a number of tools from inside. No witnesses or physical evidence were identified.

3400 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Vehicle impound – 9:10pm. Officers responded to assist fire/rescue personnel with an uncooperative man possibly under the influence of narcotics. EMS determined that the man was having a medical emergency and transported him to a local hospital for treatment. The man’s car was impounded for safekeeping.

February 28th:

2300 block of Varnum Street (7-11): Theft – 2:05am. The store clerk told officers that a man came into the store and stole a beverage and a bag of chips. The man was last seen running towards Eastern Avenue. Officers canvassed the area, located him, and after a brief foot chase were able to get him stopped and under arrest. During the foot chase the man discarded a set of brass knuckles which the officers recovered. The man was charged with theft, possession of a dangerous weapon and other charges and delivered to the custody of DOC in Upper Marlboro.

The following information  comes courtesy  of the  New Jersey Cybersecurity & Communications Integration Cell Public cell phone charging stations supplied with power cables or USB ports located in stores, airports, libraries, and schools may seem like a convenient way to charge your mobile devices on-the-go, but can you be sure that your device and data will be safe if you connect? These kiosks can contain concealed computers that attempt to extract data such as contact information, photos, and videos from connected devices, unbeknownst to the users. Additionally, malicious or compromised charging stations can expose devices to the risk of a malware infection. Even if the charging station isn’t malicious, the manufacturer or owner of the kiosk may require users to input their email addresses or phone numbers in order to charge their devices, potentially exposing them to unwanted marketing campaigns, spam emails, and scam calls. Police Report: May 8-11

Friday May 8th : 3400 block of 11 Newton Street : At about 2 pm officers responded for the report of a woman who had been assaulted by her boyfriend. The boyfriend allegedly punched the woman in the mouth and choked her. She told the officers that she did not want any police assistance and refused to tell the officers what had occurred. She was referred to the District Court Commissioner if she decided to press charges at a later time. Saturday May 9th : Nothing significant to report. Sunday May 10th : 4500 block of Eastern Avenue (BP station) : At about 11 am officers responded for the report of a stolen auto. The officers met with the victim/owner who told them that he left the keys to his 2002 Lincoln on the front seat when he went inside to pay for gas. When he came out of the store he saw his Lincoln being driven up Eastern Avenue towards Rhode Island Avenue by a black male (no further description). A check of the area for the stolen car proved negative and a lookout for it was gi
