The Mount Rainier Police Department’s weekly report is not intended to be a listing of every incident or call for service handled by the police department, but merely a general summary of incidents that may be of interest to the community. Some reports may be outside the date parameters due to extended investigations or other circumstances. Some cases are not included at all due to ongoing investigations.
May 28th:
Nothing significant to report.
May 27th:
4700 block of 31st Place: Hit and run collision – 8:10am. The owner of a 2004 Nissan Titan told officers that he came out to his vehicle this morning and discovered damage to the front fender and the driver’s side rear door. The victim suspected that the damage was caused by a trash truck, however when the officers contacted the trash company they learned that the trash was picked up on Thursday the 26th as scheduled so the trash truck should not have been present. No other evidence was recovered.
3300 block of Buchanan Street: Theft from auto – 9:15am. The reporting person told officers that he came out to his company vehicle this morning and discovered that it was up on blocks and all four wheels/tires had been stolen. He had parked the 2013 Cadillac Escalade at about 11pm the previous evening.
3300 block of Chauncey Place: Lost property – 11:30am. A man came in to the police station to report that he had lost his wallet sometime after he got out of his car on Chauncey Place at about 2pm on the 26th.
3700 block of 37th Street: Vehicle impound – 2pm. Officers impounded a 1995 Chevy Caprice. The vehicle was unregistered and had no tags displayed.
4200 block of 30th Street: Lost property – 6:20pm. A man came into the police station and reported that he lost his wallet sometime after noon today.
May 26th:
30th Street and Arundel Road: Traffic – 1:55pm. Officers stopped a 2004 Mitsubishi for running a stop sign. Further investigation revealed that the driver did not have a license. He was issued several traffic citations and his vehicle was impounded.
3700 block of 36th Street: Burglary – 3pm. The resident told officers that while he was away from home a man he knew broke into his home through the living room window. Once inside the suspect stole an air mattress out of the resident’s bedroom. Witnesses saw the suspect commit the crime and provided statements to police. The officers have applied for an arrest warrant charging the suspect with burglary.
4200 block of Kaywood Place: Disorderly conduct – 4:45pm. Officers responded for the report of a fight. When they arrived they observed a man standing on the front steps of the apartment building screaming profanities. Officers learned that the incident was related to a child custody. Repeated requests of the man to calm down and leave the area were unsuccessful. He was eventually arrested, charged with disorderly conduct and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville. Officers also impounded the man’s vehicle which he had left stopped in the roadway with the engine running and loud music coming from inside.
May 25th:
4700 block of 31st Place: Hit and run collision – 7am. The driver of a 2007 Toyota Camry told officers that a 2006 Mitsubishi struck her car as its driver tried to parallel park behind it. The Mitsubishi’s driver left the scene without leaving his/her information. The tags on the Mitsubishi were expired and it was cited for the violation and impounded for safekeeping.
3200 block of Shepherd Street: MIR – 10:15am. Officers responded for the report of two young children locked out of their house. Further investigation revealed that the children’s mother was ill and was inside the house sleeping. The kids got outside through the back door and were unable to get back in. Officers were able to wake the mom and get the kids back inside.
4500 block of 30th Street: Vehicle impound – 9:35pm. Officers responded for the report of a vehicle with an attached trailer that appeared to be abandoned. Further investigation revealed that the vehicle, a 1996 Dodge van, was displaying temporary tags issued to an Acura. The van was impounded and the tags were seized for return to MVA. The trailer could not be towed at the time of the incident and was left where it was found.
May 24th:
3200 block of Arundel Road: Theft from auto – 8:05am. The owner of a 2001 Audi came out to her vehicle this morning and discovered that sometime overnight someone smashed out the front passenger side window and stole her Queenstown Apartment Complex parking pass.
3100 block of Arundel Road: Recovered stolen auto – 5:30pm. Officers were notified by the Charles County Sheriff’s Office that their deputies recovered a 2010 Mercedes 350 in the Festival Shopping Center in Waldorf. The vehicle was originally reported stolen to MRPD back on August 23, 2015. The keys were recovered with the vehicle but the tags were not. The vehicle was impounded for safekeeping and the owner notified.
May 23rd:
3400 block of Otis Street: Vehicle impound – 1:15am. Officers impounded a Hyundai Santa Fe displaying Virginia tags that were issued to another vehicle.
3300 block of Buchanan Street: 2nd degree assault – 1:20am. The victim told officers that her boyfriend came home intoxicated and the two got into an argument that turned physical. During the altercation the man choked her and covered her mouth so she couldn’t call for help. She was able to free herself and call police but the suspect had fled the scene before officers arrived. The victim sustained a minor laceration to her forehead but refused medical treatment. Officers completed a lethality assessment screen, put the victim in contact with the Family Crisis Center and advised her of her options with the District Court Commissioner.
3300 block of Otis Street: Threats – 10:30am. The victim told officers that her daughter’s boyfriend threatened to harm her because she told him that she no longer wants him at her house. There is pending litigation against the boyfriend for other threats of violence. The investigation is ongoing and officers have applied for an arrest warrant charging the boyfriend with witness intimidation.
3100 block of Arundel Road: Stolen vehicle (recovered) – 7:30pm. A 2005 BMW reported stolen back on March 23rd was recovered by officers from the Laurel City Police Department in the 7800 block of Braygreen Road. The vehicle was unoccupied and in drivable condition with both tags attached. No arrests were made. The owner was notified of the recovery.
May 22nd:
4500 block of 29th Street: Vehicle impound – 10am. Officers impounded a 2014 Mitsubishi for displaying tags that expired in January 2016.
3100 block of Queens Chapel Road: Criminal citation – 3:10pm. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for trespassing. He had refused to leave the business and had been previously banned from the shopping center.
