Police Report: July 10-16

The Mount Rainier Police Department’s weekly report is not intended to be a listing of every incident or call for service handled by the police department, but merely a general summary of incidents that may be of interest to the community. Some reports may be outside the date parameters due to extended investigations or other circumstances. Some cases are not included at all due to ongoing investigations.

 

July 16th:

 

4700 block of 30th Street: Assault – 10:35pm. Officers on patrol observed a large group of juveniles fighting. When the officers stopped to intervene the group disbursed. One of the participants was found lying on the ground unconscious. EMS responded and transported the individual, along with his mother who was also at the scene, to Children’s Hospital for medical treatment.

 

3100 block of Queens Chapel Road: Stolen vehicle – 12:10pm. The owner of a 2005 Chrysler 300 told officers that she parked her vehicle in the parking lot at about 2am this morning. When she returned for her car at about noon she discovered it had been stolen.

 

July 15th:

 

3200 block of Arundel Road: Theft from auto – 7:15am. The owner of a 2010 Chevy Tahoe told officers that he parked his vehicle on the 14th at about 9pm. When he returned this morning he discovered his vehicle up on bricks and all four wheels and tires stolen. He also discovered that those responsible also broke in through the right passenger window and stole the radio from the center console. Officers processed the vehicle for evidence with negative results.

 

4500 block of 29th Street: Tampering – 2:30pm. Officers responded for the report of a man making unauthorized entry into several parked vehicles. Once in the area the officers detained a man they observed with his hands inside an unoccupied car. Further investigation revealed that the man had been observed by witnesses entering at least three other vehicles parked along the block. He was arrested, charged with motor vehicle tampering and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville.

 

3300 block of Chauncey Place: Assault – 2:30pm. The victim told officers that she was involved in a verbal argument with her boyfriend (suspect 1) and another woman (suspect 2), both of whom lived with the victim. The argument escalated to a physical altercation when the victim was attacked by both suspects and she sustained visible injuries to her face, both arms and upper chest. Both the victim and suspect 2 had conflicting accounts of how the fight started and why. The male suspect had left the apartment prior to the officers’ arrival. Both parties were advised of their options with a District Court Commissioner. EMS responded and transported the victim to a local hospital for treatment of her injuries.

 

July 14th:

 

Nothing significant to report.

 

July 13th:

 

3700 block of Wells Avenue: Vehicle impound – 9am. Officers impounded a 2005 Chevy that was displaying temporary tags that expired back in December of 2015 and were listed to a Subaru. The tags were removed for return to MVA.

 

Queens Chapel Road and 30th Street: M/V collision – 4pm. Officers investigating the collision determined that a 2005 Toyota was traveling west on Queens Chapel Road when the driver of a 2009 Mustang traveling east on Queens Chapel made a left turn striking the Toyota. The Mustang was inoperable after the crash and was towed from the scene. No citations were issued.

 

Rhode Island Avenue and 34th Street: M/V collision – 4pm. The officers’ investigation revealed that the driver of a UPS truck headed south on Rhode Island Avenue tried to merge into the shoulder lane and struck the left front corner of a Freightliner tractor trailer that was parked in the shoulder lane. There were no injuries and no citations issued.

 

July 12th:

 

4300 block of Russell Avenue: EPS – 3:35am. Officers responded for the report of a vehicle that had struck a parked car and the driver was slumped over the wheel. The officers found the man trying to get out of the driver’s seat and into the passenger seat with the strong odor of PCP coming from his person. He was taken into custody and transported to Washington Adventist Hospital for emergency treatment. His vehicle was impounded.

 

One Municipal Place: Criminal citation – 5:45pm. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for urinating in public.

 

3300 block of Chauncey Place: Sexual assault – 7:25pm. Officers responded for the report of a sexual assault that occurred earlier. A determination was made that the assault occurred on PGPD’s jurisdiction and was transferred to PGPD officers. Mount Rainier officers remained on scene to assist.

 

July 11th:

 

3600 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Criminal citation (x2) – 8:55am. Officers issued each of two men a criminal citation for possession of an open container of an alcoholic beverage in a public place.

 

2300 block of Varnum Street (7-11): 2nd degree assault – 12:50pm. The victim (store owner) told officers that a black male came into the store and started arguing with him. When the victim told the man to leave the man punched him repeatedly in the chest before fleeing the store in an unknown direction. Officers canvassed the area for the suspect with negative results.

 

3400 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Criminal citation (x2) – 7:50pm. Officers issued each of two men a criminal citation for disorderly conduct.

 

2500 block of Allison Street: Vandalism – 9pm. The resident told officers that when she returned home she observed damage to her apartment door. The door locking mechanism appeared to have been tampered with so that when closed and locked the door is able to be pushed open. No evidence as to who was responsible was identified.

 

July 10th:

 

3600 block of Bunker Hill Road (MR Tool Shed): Burglary – 6pm. The reporting person told officers that she had last been at the Tool Shed on July 5th at about 6:30pm and observed the building to be locked and secure. When she returned today she discovered that the door handle had been damaged and the door was ajar. When she inspected the interior of the facility she discovered that about $1,200 in equipment and tools had been stolen. She also said that while waiting for the police, she saw an older black male riding a bike dragging a lawn mower. Officers canvassed the area for the man with negative results. The reporting person was unable to provide a complete description or serial numbers for any of the items stolen. PGPD’s Property Crimes Unit was notified of the burglary.

 

3300 block of Chauncey Place: Domestic – 10:10pm. While assisting apartment security officers with an individual MRPD officers heard a woman and a child screaming from inside an adjacent apartment. The officers entered the apartment after being let in by a young child and once inside they discovered that the screaming was caused by a man beating a woman. The woman had visible scratches on her back, neck, and the back of her legs. All of these marks had broken skin and were starting to bleed. The man was arrested, charged with domestic assault and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville. The victim declined medical treatment and was advised to contact a District Court Commissioner to obtain a protective order.
