Police Report: October 2-8

The Mount Rainier Police Department’s weekly report is not intended to be a listing of every incident or call for service handled by the police department, but merely a general summary of incidents that may be of interest to the community. Some reports may be outside the date parameters due to extended investigations or other circumstances. Some cases are not included at all due to ongoing investigations.

October 8th:

3400 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Criminal citation – 7:30am. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for drinking in public.

3400 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Criminal citation – 10:25am. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for drinking in public.

3800 block of 34th Street: Traffic – 12:40pm. Officers stopped a vehicle for a traffic violation. Further investigation revealed that the driver’s DC license was suspended. Due to the driver’s false statements and refusal to provide necessary information he was arrested, charged accordingly and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville. His vehicle was released to a licensed passenger.

October 7th:

3100 block of Chillum Road: Theft – 2:35am. Officers spoke with a cab driver who said that he picked up a man in NW DC and drove him to the 3100mblock of Chillum Road. The man got out of the cab and walked away without paying the fare. Officers stopped the man and when they requested he settle up with the cab driver he became disorderly, began shouting obscenities and refused to identify himself. He was arrested, charged with misdemeanor theft and disorderly conduct and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville.

4400 block of 28th Place: Missing person – 3am. The father of a teenaged male reported that his son was living with his as a condition of his probation from a previous court case. At about 11:30pm on the 6th the father left the apartment for a few hours and when he returned the juvenile was gone. The father thinks that his son may be in the area of the 4100 block of New Hampshire Avenue NW, DC as he has family in that area.

3300 block of Shepherd Street: M/V collision – 10:15am. The driver of a FEDEX delivery truck failed to pay full time and attention to his driving and drove off the roadway and struck a PEPCO utility pole. The driver left the scene and returned a short time later on foot. The driver was cited appropriately. A FEDEX supervisor responded to the scene and had the truck towed to their lot. PEPCO was notified of the damage to the utility pole.

3100 block of Chillum Road (7-11): Armed robbery – 1pm. Two men came into the store, selected several soft drinks and presented them for payment at the sales counter. As the clerk opened the cash register one of the suspects displayed a handgun and ordered the clerk to step back from the register. The second suspect jumped onto the counter and stole the cash from the register. Both suspects then fled the store in an unknown direction. A Hyattsville City PD K9 team responded and searched the area for the suspects. The K9 tracked the suspects to the foot path near the crosswalk on the Hyattsville side of Queens Chapel Road where the track was lost.  PGPD robbery detectives responded to conduct a follow-up investigation and the Crime Scene Unit processed the scene for evidence. Video footage of the crime was recovered and forwarded to the detectives. 

3200 block of Queenstown Drive: Burglary – 1:30pm. The victim told officers that when she arrived home she discovered that someone had broken into her apartment. She immediately called police and did not enter the apartment until police arrived and found no one inside. A walk though of the apartment revealed that nothing had been stolen. Queenstown management was notified and had maintenance respond to the apartment to secure the front door. Nothing of evidentiary value was recovered.

October 6th:

4200 block of 34th Street: Fraud – 4:05pm. A man came into the police station and reported that someone used his personal information to open an AT&T account and run up charges totaling over $1,000.

October 5th:

4300 block of Russell Avenue: Missing juvenile – 4:45am. Officers were notified that a 15 year old male reported missing on August 14th was found by the Albemarle County, Virginia Police. The juvenile’s mother was notified, but she was unable to immediately respond to pick him up. Albemarle Police transported the missing juvenile to a secure group home until such a time as his mother is able to arrive and bring him home from Virginia.

2900 block of Arundel Road: Vehicle impound – 8:45am. Officers impounded a 2009 Toyota Camry for displaying a fraudulent West Virginia temporary tag. The owner also had two separate fraudulent registration cards and the vehicle’s insurance was cancelled on September 14th.

3400 block of Newton Street: Theft from auto – 10:50am. The owner of a 2106 Toyota Corolla reported that he came out to his car this morning and discovered the front passenger window had been broken out and a GPS unit missing from inside. The vehicle was processed for prints with negative results.

3300 block of Rhode Island Avenue: EPS – 2:55pm. Officers responded to check the welfare of a woman who appeared to be disoriented. When they arrived they found the woman unsteady on her feet and had trouble answering basic questions. Officers transported her to Washington Adventist Hospital for evaluation by the medical staff.

3100 block of Buchanan Street: M/V collision – 3:50pm. Officers investigating a single vehicle collision found that a woman was attempting to park her car and struck the corner of the boiler room building. She may have experienced a medical emergency at the time of the collision and was transported to Providence Hospital for treatment. Her car was towed for safekeeping.

October 4th:

3800 block of Bunker Hill Road: CDS possession – 3:40am. Officers patrolling the area stopped to check the welfare of a man walking in the street and possibly under the influence of narcotics. Further investigation revealed that he was in possession of a sufficient quantity of CDS (suspected heroin) to warrant his arrest. He was charged with possession of a CDS with intent to distribute and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville.

4300 block of Russell Avenue: Theft – 1:05pm. The victim reported that she may have dropped her wallet while getting out of her car at her apartment building. She was later notified by her credit union that an unknown person reported her wallet found at Washington Medical.  She went to Washington Medical but was unable to retrieve her wallet. No one from Washington Medical was able to locate her missing wallet. All of the bank cards have been suspended there was no fraudulent activity on her bank accounts.

October 3rd:

34th Street and Bunker Hill Road: M/V collision – 6:55am. The owner of a 2005 Honda reported that she witnessed an unknown, undescribed vehicle strike her Honda while it was legally parked. The driver of the striking vehicle fled the scene without stopping.

One Municipal Place: Criminal citation – 9:25am. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for drinking in public.

3100 block of Chillum Road: Disorderly conduct – 4:20pm. Officers stopped a man who they saw running down the middle of Chillum Road yelling obscenities at passersby. After some difficulty determining his real identity he was charged with disorderly conduct and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville.

3400 block of Perry Street: Criminal citation – 5:05pm. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for urinating in public.

3300 block of Chauncey Place: Property damage – 7:25am. The owner of a 2012 Chevy reported that she came out to her vehicle the evening of August 31st and discovered a small scratch on the right passenger side of her vehicle.

3700 block of 36th Street: MIR – 8:35pm. Officers responded for the report of the smell of marijuana coming from the back yard of a vacant house. Officers checked the property and found no CDS violations but noted that the house was unsecured. No one was found inside and the officers secured the house.

3300 block of Buchanan Street: Domestic assault – 10:30pm. The victim told officers that she and her significant other got into a verbal argument. During the argument the man punched her with a closed fist and choked her. The man also struck her son during the altercation. The victim has a current protective order against the man but said that she asked for the protective order to be dismissed three months ago.  The victim screened positive on a lethality assessment and spoke with a counselor at the Family Crisis Center. She was advised of her options with a District Court Commissioner.

October 2nd:

2200 block of Varnum Street: Warrant service – 9:15am. Officers stopped a vehicle for a traffic violation. Further investigation revealed that the driver did not have a valid driver’s license and had two open warrants through Anne Arundel County for failing to appear in court (FTA) on a charge of felony theft. He was arrested and delivered to the custody of DOC in Upper Marlboro. His vehicle was also impounded.

4000 block of 31st Street: Theft from auto – 9:45am. The owner of a 2017 Nissan Armada reported that someone stole the Virginia temp tags off his vehicle while he was attending church.

The following information  comes courtesy  of the  New Jersey Cybersecurity & Communications Integration Cell Public cell phone charging stations supplied with power cables or USB ports located in stores, airports, libraries, and schools may seem like a convenient way to charge your mobile devices on-the-go, but can you be sure that your device and data will be safe if you connect? These kiosks can contain concealed computers that attempt to extract data such as contact information, photos, and videos from connected devices, unbeknownst to the users. Additionally, malicious or compromised charging stations can expose devices to the risk of a malware infection. Even if the charging station isn’t malicious, the manufacturer or owner of the kiosk may require users to input their email addresses or phone numbers in order to charge their devices, potentially exposing them to unwanted marketing campaigns, spam emails, and scam calls. Police Report: May 8-11

Friday May 8th : 3400 block of 11 Newton Street : At about 2 pm officers responded for the report of a woman who had been assaulted by her boyfriend. The boyfriend allegedly punched the woman in the mouth and choked her. She told the officers that she did not want any police assistance and refused to tell the officers what had occurred. She was referred to the District Court Commissioner if she decided to press charges at a later time. Saturday May 9th : Nothing significant to report. Sunday May 10th : 4500 block of Eastern Avenue (BP station) : At about 11 am officers responded for the report of a stolen auto. The officers met with the victim/owner who told them that he left the keys to his 2002 Lincoln on the front seat when he went inside to pay for gas. When he came out of the store he saw his Lincoln being driven up Eastern Avenue towards Rhode Island Avenue by a black male (no further description). A check of the area for the stolen car proved negative and a lookout for it was gi
