Police Report: March 26-30

The Mount Rainier Police Department’s weekly report is not intended to be a listing of every incident or call for service handled by the police department, but merely a general summary of incidents that may be of interest to the community. Some reports may be outside the date parameters due to extended investigations or other circumstances. Some cases are not included at all due to ongoing investigations.

March 26th:

3100 block of Queens Chapel Road: M/V collision – 12pm. The driver of a 1998 Nissan was driving on the service road when he struck a parked 2015 Nissan causing minor damage to the front driver’s side bumper. The driver of the striking vehicle left his contact information for the owner of the parked vehicle who was unable to be located.

3100 block of Queens Chapel Road: Warrant service – 11pm. Officers were approached by a man who said that he had an open arrest warrant. The officers verified the warrant that had been issued for the man’s arrest after he failed to appear in court on a charge of theft. He was arrested and delivered to the custody of DOC in Upper Marlboro.

March 27th:

3500 block of Perry Street: Recovered stolen property – 1:30pm. Officers met with the owner of a bicycle that had been stolen from his residence in DC. He arranged to buy back his stolen bike and was meeting the seller at the Mount Rainier Library. As the officers arrived in the area they saw the suspect riding the bike in the 3500 block of Perry Street. They stopped the suspect and the bike’s owner positively identified the bike as the one stolen from him. The victim told the officers that he did not want to press charges but only wanted the bike back. The suspect gladly surrendered the bike and both individuals were sent on their way.

3300 block of Chauncey Place: Vandalism to auto – 5:50pm. The owner of a 2002 Hummer told officers that he came out to his vehicle and discovered two deep scratches on both sides that were not there when he parked it. No evidence or witnesses were identified.

3100 block of Queens Chapel Road: Theft – 11:45pm. The victim told officers that at about noon today she left her purse on top of her car as she and a friend were unloading groceries. At about 12:30 she saw a man described as 30-40 years of age, tall, with medium build wearing a black jacket with a hood and blue jeans running away from the car carrying her purse. She said that she only discovered that the purse was gone after she began looking for it while getting ready for work around 2pm. 0 hours.

March 28th:

3400 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Criminal citation – 9:10am. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for drinking in public.

4300 block of 28th Place: Theft from auto – 9:30am. The owner of a 2007 Lexus told officers that he came out to his vehicle this morning and discovered the driver’s side window broken out. Further investigation revealed that the inside of the vehicle had been rummaged through and some laundry had been stolen. No evidence or witness could be found.

March 29th:

3100 block of Chillum Road (7-11): Destruction of property – 2:20am. Officers responded for the report of a holdup alarm. They met a store employee in the parking lot who pointed out that the front door had been broken and identified the man who broke it. The suspect was very intoxicated and when asked about the door he said that the store employee had said something to him that made him angry and that’s why he broke the door. He was arrested, charged with destruction of property and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville.

4300 block of Kaywood Drive: Vehicle impound – 4am. Officers impounded a 2011 Nissan Sentra that was parked on a sidewalk blocking the passage to a handicap ramp.

4200 block of 30th Street: Theft from auto – 9:30am. The owner of a 2005 Toyota Camry reported that he came out to his vehicle this morning and discovered that both tags had been stolen off the vehicle.

3000 block of Queens Chapel Road: Property damage – 1:15pm. The owner of a 2000 Porsche reported that he came out to his vehicle this afternoon and discovered superficial damage to the rear passenger side bumper.

March 30th:

2300 block of Varnum Street (7-11): Theft – 3:20am. Store employees told officers that a black male in his 30’s dresses all in black came into the store, filled a shopping basket with toilet paper, paper towels and ice cream and fled the store on foot without paying for the items. The suspect was last seen in the direction of Kaywood Apartments. A canvas of the area for the suspect proved negative.

4200 block of Russell Avenue: Theft from auto – 5:35am. The owner of a 2014 Chevy Camaro told officers that he heard a noise outside his apartment, went to check on his vehicle and discovered all four tires and wheels missing had been stolen. There were no witnesses and no evidence was recovered.

I received this earlier today courtesy of CPL Jim Flynn of the Bladensburg Police Department: For those of you who have a vehicle that has a remote entry device, you may also have a handy burglar/emergency alarm that you probably don’t think about. Most of these remote entry devices have a panic button that activates your vehicle’s security alarm system. Test it. It will activate from almost anywhere inside your house and will keep honking and flashing the lights until either your battery runs down or until you reset it with the button on the remote entry fob. It works if your vehicle is parked in your driveway or garage. So, the next time you come home for the night and start to put your keys away think of this: Put your car keys beside your bed when you retire for the night.
