Police Report: June 18-24

The Mount Rainier Police Department's weekly report is not intended to be a listing of every incident or call for service handled by the police department, but merely a general summary of incidents that may be of interest to the community. Some reports may be outside the date parameters due to extended investigations or other circumstances. Some cases are not included at all due to ongoing investigations.

June 24th:

4200 block of 30th Street: Vehicle impound – 4:30pm. Officers impounded a 1997 Toyota that had been previously marked for 40-hour towing.

3300 block of Bunker Hill Road: Criminal citation – 10:35pm. Officers issued each of two men a criminal citation for disorderly conduct.

June 23rd:

4200 block of 28th Street: Carjacking – 2:20am. Officers were notified that a carjacking occurred about an hour prior. While responded to meet with the victim PGPD plainclothes officers located the vehicle occupied by two individuals and followed it into DC. The two abandoned the vehicle in the 600 block of Edgewood Road and were promptly taken into custody by DC police. PGPD detectives are handling the follow-up investigation and extradition of the suspects back to Maryland.

3300 block of Chauncey Place: Theft from auto – 8am. The owner of a 2017 Ford Fusion reported that sometime overnight someone stole the tags off her vehicle.

3500 block of Otis Street: Criminal citation – 10:15am. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for drinking in public.

3300 block of Buchanan Street: Missing person – 11:30pm. The mother of a 13 year old boy told officers that he had a verbal argument with his older sister over taking the trash out. Afterwards he told his mother that he was going to the store but did not return home. Officers canvassed the neighborhood for the boy with negative results. PGPD detectives are following up and officers will be checking back with the mother regularly until the boy is located or returns home.

June 22nd:

3200 block of Rhode Island Avenue: EPS – 9:10am.  Officers responded for the report of a disorderly individual. When they arrived and spoke with the man they determined that his disorderly conduct may be related to a mental condition. He was taken into custody and transported to Prince George's Hospital for an emergency psychiatric evaluation. At about 7pm officers obtained a criminal summons for the man charging him with disorderly conduct, failure to obey a reasonable lawful order and disturbing the peace. ​

3200 block of Queens Chapel Road: Commercial burglary – 2:25pm. The victim told officers that someone stole money from his backpack after he had placed it in a secured employee workroom. When his boss pulled the surveillance video he discovered that on June 15th at about 3am an adult black male looked inside the workroom window, manipulated the door-lock and took the victim's backpack. The suspect opened the backpack, took the money that was inside of it, and stashed the backpack inside a dryer unit nearby. He then fled on foot out the back door of the laundromat.         

3300 block of Buchanan Street: 2nd degree assault – 8:30pm. Officers attempted to get an intoxicated man to leave an apartment where he was not wanted and not a resident. The man resisted the officers' attempts to escort the man from the building. He was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct and 2nd degree assault and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville.

June 21st:

One Municipal Place: Assault – 7:40am. The victim told officers that an intoxicated Hispanic male grabbed her breast. She said that he did the same to several other women at the bus stop. Investigation revealed that the other victims and the suspect had left the area prior to the officers' arrival. The victim did not want to give her name or file a report. A canvas of the area for the suspect was completed with negative results.

2700 block of Arundel Road: Criminal citation – 9am. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for illegal dumping.

4200 block of 31st Street: Theft – 9:25am. The victim told officers that sometime overnight someone stole his Surly long haul trucker road bike from his backyard. The bike was described as black with white lettering "SURLY", a USB light mounted on the front, a Topeak rack on back and a trailer hitch mounted on the rear axle.

3300 block of Chillum Road: Lost property – 3pm. A man came into the police station to report that he had lost his Honduras passport and US Visa.

3400 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Criminal citation – 10:10pm. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for drinking in public.

June 20th:

3400 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Suspicious person – 11:10am. Officers were alerted to a man walking in the area with a handgun in his waistband and was seen going into the Mount Rainier library. Officers from PGPD and Hyattsville PD assisted with taking the man into custody and recovered a black BB gun from his right waistband.  Prince George's County Police took over this incident due to the location belonging to Prince Georges County.

3200 block of Queens Chapel Road: Commercial armed robbery (Little Caesar's) – 7:40pm. The victims told officers that two black males (one armed with a handgun the other armed with a knife and both wearing masks) came into the store and announced a robbery. The suspects obtained store funds and a customer's cell phone before fleeing out of the back of the store towards the Queenstown apartment complex. PGPD detectives and a forensics team responded to take over the investigation.

3300 block of Chillum Road (7-11): Theft – 10:40pm. Store employees told officers that two black males entered the store and stole about $10 worth of merchandise before fleeing the area in a waiting vehicle.

3100 block of Windom Road: Missing person – 9:15am. The spouse of a 48 year old man reported that he failed to pick him up at the Hyattsville Metro Station as planned. When the spouse got home he discovered that the missing person had been gone from home for some time. Officers found the last known location of the man's cell phone was on I95 opposite the laurel rest stop. Maryland State Police checked the location but did not locate the man. At about 3:30pm MRPD officers made contact with the Ocean County Sheriff's Office in New Jersey. A member of their department located the missing person in his vehicle which was parked at the Mantoloking Bridge parking area. The man was transported to a local hospital for emergency medical and psychiatric evaluations. 

June 19th:

3100 block of Windom Road: Missing person – 9:15am. The spouse of a 48 year old man reported that he failed to pick him up at the Hyattsville Metro Station as planned. 2900 block of Queens Chapel Road: Stolen vehicle – 11am. The victim told officers that he came out to the loaner car he received from his dealer and discovered it had been stolen. Officers contacted the dealership and learned that the vehicle was equipped with a GPS unit. The GPS indicated that the vehicle was parked in the 3200 block of Laurel Fort Meade Road in Anne Arundel County. Fort Meade Police located the vehicle and found that it had no ignition damage but did have extensive front end damage. They impounded the vehicle and notified the dealership of the recovery.

June 18th:

4400 block of 28th Place: Vandalism – 1:40am. Officers responded for the report of a black male throwing bricks/rocks at a second floor apartment window. Witnesses reported seeing the suspect committing the crime. Officers developed a suspect from previous calls at the address and the witness positively identified the suspect. Further investigation is underway to locate and charge the suspect with destruction of property.

3400 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Domestic – 1:35pm. Officers met with a woman who had obtained a temporary peace order against a man who was presently inside her hair salon. Once he was served with the order he left the area without incident. The Return of Service was faxed to the Prince George's County Sheriff's Office.​

The following information  comes courtesy  of the  New Jersey Cybersecurity & Communications Integration Cell Public cell phone charging stations supplied with power cables or USB ports located in stores, airports, libraries, and schools may seem like a convenient way to charge your mobile devices on-the-go, but can you be sure that your device and data will be safe if you connect? These kiosks can contain concealed computers that attempt to extract data such as contact information, photos, and videos from connected devices, unbeknownst to the users. Additionally, malicious or compromised charging stations can expose devices to the risk of a malware infection. Even if the charging station isn’t malicious, the manufacturer or owner of the kiosk may require users to input their email addresses or phone numbers in order to charge their devices, potentially exposing them to unwanted marketing campaigns, spam emails, and scam calls. Police Report: May 8-11

Friday May 8th : 3400 block of 11 Newton Street : At about 2 pm officers responded for the report of a woman who had been assaulted by her boyfriend. The boyfriend allegedly punched the woman in the mouth and choked her. She told the officers that she did not want any police assistance and refused to tell the officers what had occurred. She was referred to the District Court Commissioner if she decided to press charges at a later time. Saturday May 9th : Nothing significant to report. Sunday May 10th : 4500 block of Eastern Avenue (BP station) : At about 11 am officers responded for the report of a stolen auto. The officers met with the victim/owner who told them that he left the keys to his 2002 Lincoln on the front seat when he went inside to pay for gas. When he came out of the store he saw his Lincoln being driven up Eastern Avenue towards Rhode Island Avenue by a black male (no further description). A check of the area for the stolen car proved negative and a lookout for it was gi
