Police Report: February 11

February 11:

3600 block of Rhode Island Avenue: At about 10:30 am officers responded for a domestic dispute. Investigation revealed that the dispute started over custody of a child. Both individuals involved in the dispute were checked for outstanding warrants and the officers learned that the female half of the dispute had been reported missing through MPD on November 22, 2005, and had been subsequently emancipated (essentially declared an adult) as of 2005. MPD was notified that their missing person had been located and she was removed from the NCIC missing persons database. Both individuals were advised of their civil/legal options in the child custody dispute and sent on their separate ways.

3300 block of Buchanan Street: At about 8 pm officers responded for the report of an attempted citizen robbery. The officers interviewed the victim and learned that she had just arrived in front if her apartment building and was in the process of opening the front door when the suspect caught her attention by walking up to her. The suspect then demanded money by stating “give me your money”. When the victim told him that she did not have any he forced her to sit down on the step and tried to forcibly take her bag from her. Because she was clutching her bag tightly to her body the suspect was unsuccessful. When the suspect realized that he was not going to get the bag he fled on foot toward Chillum Road. MRPD officers conducted an extensive area check for the suspect with negative results. PGPD robbery detectives were notified of the crime and all area agencies were given the suspect’s description and information. The victim described the suspect as a white male, possibly Hispanic, 20-24 years old, wearing dark colored pants and a black hooded sweatshirt. The victim also said that the suspect had no facial hair and kept the hood of his sweatshirt over his head during the crime so she was unable to provide additional descriptors.

2300 block of Varnum Street (7-11): At about 3:30 am officers responded for the report of a theft. The store clerk told the officers that a black male, about 40 years old, 6’ tall, 230 lbs, wearing all black clothing came into the store and walked directly behind the counter. He then stole a number of packs of cigarettes and immediately fled on foot out of the store onto 22nd Street. The clerk said that the suspect got into a black vehicle (no further description) that had a partial DC tag of either PV-18 or DV-18. A check of area for the suspect and the vehicle proved negative.

Crime Prevention Tip: Car Alarms

I received this earlier today courtesy of CPL Jim Flynn of the Bladensburg Police Department: For those of you who have a vehicle that has a remote entry device, you may also have a handy burglar/emergency alarm that you probably don’t think about. Most of these remote entry devices have a panic button that activates your vehicle’s security alarm system. Test it. It will activate from almost anywhere inside your house and will keep honking and flashing the lights until either your battery runs down or until you reset it with the button on the remote entry fob. It works if your vehicle is parked in your driveway or garage. So, the next time you come home for the night and start to put your keys away think of this: Put your car keys beside your bed when you retire for the night. If you hear a noise outside your home or someone tries to get in your house, just press the panic button for your car. If your car alarm goes off when someone is trying to break into your house, within a few se...
