Police Report: February 24

3700 block of 36th Street: At about 7:30 pm officers responded for the report of an armed carjacking. The victim reported that she had just parked her 2005 Nissan in her driveway when she was approached by two armed men. One of them pointed a handgun at her and ordered her out of her vehicle. As she got out, both men threw her to the ground, got into her vehicle and fled the scene up 36th Street towards Perry Street. The victim called 911 on her cell phone and the County police call taker immediately dispatched PGPD units to the scene and also transferred the call to Bladensburg PD so that MRPD units could be dispatched. Within a couple of minutes a PGPD patrol unit spotted the carjacked vehicle a short distance away in Brentwood. PGPD officers were able to get the vehicle stopped and arrested the driver before he could get away. The passenger fled on foot. An extensive search of the area for the passenger was instituted by PGPD and MRPD ground units, assisted by PGPD’s helicopter Air One. The search was successful and PGPD officers located and arrested the passenger. Officers also were able to find the handgun the men used to commit the crime. Both individuals were delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville charged with armed carjacking and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony among other charges. The victim was visibly shaken and upset by her ordeal but was not seriously injured. The PGPD officers involved in this case are to be commended for their quick response and deployment of resources without which this case could not have been resolved as quickly as it was.

Crime Prevention Tip: Car Alarms

I received this earlier today courtesy of CPL Jim Flynn of the Bladensburg Police Department: For those of you who have a vehicle that has a remote entry device, you may also have a handy burglar/emergency alarm that you probably don’t think about. Most of these remote entry devices have a panic button that activates your vehicle’s security alarm system. Test it. It will activate from almost anywhere inside your house and will keep honking and flashing the lights until either your battery runs down or until you reset it with the button on the remote entry fob. It works if your vehicle is parked in your driveway or garage. So, the next time you come home for the night and start to put your keys away think of this: Put your car keys beside your bed when you retire for the night. If you hear a noise outside your home or someone tries to get in your house, just press the panic button for your car. If your car alarm goes off when someone is trying to break into your house, within a few se...
