Police Report: February 18

3200 block of Rhode Island Avenue (Thrifty Rental Car): At about 5 pm officers took a report of stolen license plates. The reporting person told the officers that sometime between 8 pm on February 17th and the time of the report person(s) unknown stole Maryland tag 3EHF62 off of a 2007 Chevy. No further information was available and no evidence or witnesses could be located.

3300 block of Chauncey Place: At about 9:15 pm officers patrolling in the Queenstown Apartments area observed a vehicle operating at a high rate of speed. The officers stopped the vehicle and their subsequent inquiries revealed that the tags attached to the vehicle were expired and not registered to it. They also learned that the vehicle itself was unregistered in Maryland. Consequently the vehicle and tags were impounded and the driver was issued several Maryland state traffic citations.

3500 block of Newton Place: At about 9:30 pm a citizen reported that her purse had been stolen. When the officers interviewed the victim she told them that as she was walking to her apartment a black male ran up from behind her and snatched her purse. Once the thief had the purse he fled the area in an unknown direction. The victim described him as a black male approximately 5’4” tall, 140 lbs., wearing a black shirt, black and white pants and black shoes. The victim was not harmed during the incident and told the officers that there was nothing of value in her purse when it was taken. A canvass of the area for the suspect was negative.

Parking Citation Collection Notices

As you read this entry, many of our residents may have received a collection notice regarding one or more unpaid parking citations. We have received at least a hundred telephone calls, and our Records staff is quite taxed sorting out those notices that were received in error, and those that are legitimate. Just a few notes of caution that I’d like to pass along to help make things easier for all concerned. First, no member of the police department staff will void, cancel or otherwise dispose of a valid collection notice. We are also not authorized to make any payment arrangements or reduce the amount owed to the City. The staff at City Hall is under the same constraints. Persons who receive a collection notice and have concerns that it was issued in error should call the police department during regular business hours and our staff will research the citation. All payments are to be made either to the collection agency directly or at City Hall. The police department does not acce...
