Police Report: January 12-18

The Mount Rainier Police Department’s weekly report is not intended to be a listing of every incident or call for service handled by the police department, but merely a general summary of incidents that may be of interest to the community. Some reports may be outside the date parameters due to extended investigations or other circumstances. Some cases are not included at all due to ongoing investigations.

January 18th:

4200 block of 28th Street: Vehicle impound – 10:30am. Officers impounded a 2009 BMW 325 for blocking a private driveway.

January 17th:

4200 block of Russell Avenue: 2nd degree assault – 8:40am. The victim told officers that she got into an argument with a juvenile male relative over his drug use and disrespectful behavior. The juvenile got upset and began hitting and kicking her. The victim’s brother and another man intervened to stop the assault. The victim was advised to contact Juvenile Services in regards to charges for the suspect and other assistance.

4700 block of 25th Street: Missing person – 10:25am. The parents of a 23 year old woman called to report their daughter missing. They told the officers that their daughter goes missing repeatedly and stays gone for months on end.  The daughter’s information was entered into the NCIC missing persons database.

2700 block of Queens Chapel Road: Emergency petition – 10:05pm. Officers on patrol came upon a man who was obviously under the influence of a PCP-type drug. The officers and fire/rescue personnel attempted to communicate with him to no avail. He was taken into custody and transported to Prince George’s Hospital. Once at the hospital the man became very combative and tried to violently fight with the police and hospital security. He was put in restraints and released to the hospital medical staff for treatment.

January 16th:

3400 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Criminal citation – 9:05am. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for possession of an open container of an alcoholic beverage in a public place.

4200 block of Kaywood Drive: Vehicle impound – 11:35am. Officers impounded a 1998 Ford Crown Victoria for being parked on a City street with tags that expired in March of 2012.

2700 block of Arundel Road: Theft – 1:45pm. The owner of a 1987 Yamaha moped told officers that sometime prior to his call to police someone stole his moped. The vehicle had been secured inside the owner’s apartment building hallway. No evidence/witnesses could be identified.

3800 block of 35th Street (Alley 19): Criminal citation (x2) – Officers issued a man two criminal citations, one for littering and one for drinking an alcoholic beverage in a public place.

3200 block of Rhode Island Avenue (rear parking lot): Vandalism to auto – 11:45pm. The reporting person told officers that sometime between 5pm and the time he called police someone broke out the driver’s side window of his brother’s 2007 BMW. The reporting person said that nothing was stolen from inside the vehicle. Officers did not locate the object used to break the window and no physical evidence was recovered.

January 15th:

3200 block of Chillum Road: M/V collision – 1:15pm. Officers investigated a traffic collision and determined that the driver of a 2008 Chevy truck failed to pay full time and attention to his driving and rear ended a parked 2006 Toyota truck. Both vehicles sustained minor damage and no one was injured.

3200 block of Perry Street: Stolen vehicle – 2pm. The owner of a 1998 Dodge pick-up truck told officers that sometime between 7pm on the 14th and the time he called police someone stole his vehicle. No evidence/witnesses were identified.

4000 block of 35th Street: Theft – 3:15pm. The victim told officers that she placed her purse on her front porch while she took several items into her home. Upon returning to her purse she discovered that her wallet was missing and that the front gate to her yard was open. Officers canvassed the neighborhood for suspects and witnesses but found none.

2300 block of Varnum Street (7-11): Shoplifting – 8pm. A store clerk told officers that a black male (NFD) came into the store, took several items off the shelves and fled the store without paying.

3300 block of Chillum Road: Criminal citation (x3) – 7:20pm. Officers issued each of three men a criminal citation for drinking in public.

January 14th:

4100 block of 30th Street: Stolen auto – 7:30am. The owner of a 1997 Honda Accord told officers that sometime between 4pm on the 13th and the time she called police someone stole her vehicle from where it was parked in her driveway. No evidence/witnesses were identified.

January 13th:

3300 block of Perry Street: Theft from auto – 10:10am. The owner of a 2004 Hyundai told officers that sometime between 8:30pm on January 11th and 8pm on the 12th someone broke into his vehicle through the front passenger window and stole a backpack from inside. The backpack contained two gaming consoles. No evidence/witnesses were identified.

3200 block of Chillum Road: 1st degree assault/robbery – 6:15pm. Officers met with the victim at his residence in regards to an assault that occurred on January 10th at about 7pm. He said that as he was walking to his apartment when he was approached by a man who struck him on the head with an unknown object knocking him unconscious. When he came to he was bleeding from the nose and head and had knots and swelling over his entire face and head. He had also been robbed of a quantity of cash. The victim did not immediately seek medical attention because he does not have medical insurance; and he did not notify police because of his immigration status. His family was eventually able to get him to Washington Adventist Hospital treatment where he was treated for a possible broken jaw and received stitches to close a head wound. The victim was unable to provide a description of his assailant.

January 12th:

2300 block of Varnum Street (7-11): Shoplifting – 2am. The store clerk told officers that a black male (NFD) came into the store, took several items of food off the shelves and left the store without paying for them.

3300 block of Perry Street: Vehicle impound – 9:30am. Officers patrolling with a mobile license plate reader were alerted to a 2009 Mitsubishi Lancer that had a suspended registration and an MSP pick-up order for the tags. The information was confirmed and the vehicle was impounded for safekeeping. The tags were seized for return to MVA.

3200 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Hit and run collision – 10am. The owner of a 2006 Volvo told officers that he returned to his vehicle to find it damaged. The damage was consistent with the vehicle being struck by a second vehicle that failed to remain at the scene. No witnesses/evidence could be identified.

4400 block of 28th Place: Theft from auto – 1:50pm. The owner of a 2003 Mazda 6 told officers that sometime prior to his call to police someone stole both registration plates off his vehicle.

The following information  comes courtesy  of the  New Jersey Cybersecurity & Communications Integration Cell Public cell phone charging stations supplied with power cables or USB ports located in stores, airports, libraries, and schools may seem like a convenient way to charge your mobile devices on-the-go, but can you be sure that your device and data will be safe if you connect? These kiosks can contain concealed computers that attempt to extract data such as contact information, photos, and videos from connected devices, unbeknownst to the users. Additionally, malicious or compromised charging stations can expose devices to the risk of a malware infection. Even if the charging station isn’t malicious, the manufacturer or owner of the kiosk may require users to input their email addresses or phone numbers in order to charge their devices, potentially exposing them to unwanted marketing campaigns, spam emails, and scam calls. Police Report: May 8-11

Friday May 8th : 3400 block of 11 Newton Street : At about 2 pm officers responded for the report of a woman who had been assaulted by her boyfriend. The boyfriend allegedly punched the woman in the mouth and choked her. She told the officers that she did not want any police assistance and refused to tell the officers what had occurred. She was referred to the District Court Commissioner if she decided to press charges at a later time. Saturday May 9th : Nothing significant to report. Sunday May 10th : 4500 block of Eastern Avenue (BP station) : At about 11 am officers responded for the report of a stolen auto. The officers met with the victim/owner who told them that he left the keys to his 2002 Lincoln on the front seat when he went inside to pay for gas. When he came out of the store he saw his Lincoln being driven up Eastern Avenue towards Rhode Island Avenue by a black male (no further description). A check of the area for the stolen car proved negative and a lookout for it was gi
